Check the HVAC breaker, service switch, and equipment panel first; then inspect the Nest’s Equipment or Wiring screen. This is primarily an HVAC power problem—not a router problem—and you should switch off HVAC power before touching any thermostat wire.
What E298 means
Google classifies E298 as a critical “No system power” error, alongside E448. The thermostat may show “No power,” “No system power,” or “Equipment error,” lose Wi‑Fi, or report a low battery because it is not receiving adequate power from the HVAC equipment. See Google’s current help-code guidance at Google’s E298 troubleshooting page.

The dedicated procedure specifically covers the Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) on heating and cooling systems common in the United States and Canada. Menu labels and wiring requirements differ by model; EU systems using Heat Link need region-specific instructions.

- Check HVAC power. Inspect the HVAC circuit breaker, fuse box, and nearby furnace or air-handler service switch. If a breaker trips again immediately, leave it off and call an HVAC professional.
- Check the equipment panel. A furnace or air-handler cover that is removed or not fully closed can activate a safety interlock and stop power to the thermostat.
- Open the Nest equipment screen. On the Nest Thermostat, use Settings → Equipment. On the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), look for Equipment → Wiring Info. Software wording can vary, so use the on-screen Equipment or Wiring section.
- Interpret the wires. All wires shown gray suggests a broader system-power problem. One gray wire means that conductor is not being electrically detected and may be loose, incorrectly configured, or damaged.
- Turn HVAC power off before wiring work. Use the breaker, fuse box, or system switch before removing the display or adjusting conductors.
- Reseat the wires. Pull the display from its base, verify each conductor against the actual terminal label, press the connector tab, and reinsert the wire fully. Where Google’s procedure applies and the conductor needs preparation, leave about one-third to one-half inch of copper exposed. Reattach the display.
- Restore power and test. Recheck Equipment or Wiring Info, then call for heat or cooling. If E298 returns, stop repeated resets and investigate the power-delivery or HVAC fault.

How to read the wiring result
All wires are gray
Prioritize the HVAC breaker, service switch, fuse, equipment-panel closure, and overall equipment power. Do not assume every thermostat wire needs rewiring.
Only one wire is gray
With power off, inspect that terminal and confirm the wire was entered under the correct label during setup. A gray wire is not proof that the conductor is broken.

- Savings you can count on: The Nest Learning Thermostat can help save up to 31% on heating and cooling bills[2]
- Improved compatibility: It works with most 24V systems, including gas, electric, oil, forced air, heat pump, and radiant, and no C wire is required for installation in most homes; visit the Nest Compatibility Checker for more info[5]
- Easy control in the Google Home app: Adjust on your phone from anywhere[1] or by using your voice with Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant smart speaker[3], it’s easy to install yourself and it’s Matter compatible for simple integration into your smart home[5]
- Beautiful design: With a 60% larger display[11] and Dynamic Farsight, you can see info from across the room[1]; choose the design, like a clock or the weather; it automatically adjusts brightness for the best readability or you can adjust manually
The display is dead or repeatedly loses charge
This can indicate continuing loss of HVAC power or insufficient charging power. Model-specific battery behavior differs: the standard Nest Thermostat uses replaceable batteries, while the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) has a rechargeable battery that Google says can be charged by USB if its display turns off during troubleshooting.
When a C wire or Nest Power Connector may be needed
A common (C) wire is not universally required. Google notes that some heat-only, cool-only, zoned, and heat-pump systems need dedicated common-wire power or a compatible Nest Power Connector for reliable operation.

- If an existing C wire is available, it must be connected at both the thermostat and HVAC control board and correctly represented in Nest configuration.
- A Nest Power Connector may provide the required dedicated power in compatible installations, but it cannot repair a tripped breaker, blown fuse, failed transformer, damaged conductor, or defective control board.
- Installing a new C wire generally requires a professional. Two-transformer, zoned, or otherwise unusual systems should not be rewired using generic instructions.
E298 after installation versus after months of normal use
It appeared immediately after installation
Recheck wire identification, connector seating, HVAC power left off during installation, and whether the furnace or air-handler panel is fully closed. A system may also require a C wire or Power Connector.
It appeared suddenly after working normally
Check for a tripped breaker, switched-off service disconnect, recent HVAC service, a loose connection, blown low-voltage fuse, failing transformer, or control-board fault. These component-level causes require technician diagnosis; Google’s official classification remains “No system power,” not a definitive R-wire failure.

Why Wi‑Fi restarts and factory resets usually fail
E298 can make the thermostat go offline because missing HVAC power prevents normal operation. Restarting a router does not restore that electrical supply. A thermostat restart is reasonable only after power has been restored or if a stale offline symptom remains. A factory reset can erase configuration while leaving the underlying fault untouched, so it should not be the first response.
If the thermostat is powered and E298 is cleared but it remains offline, then use Google’s separate offline guidance: Troubleshoot a Nest thermostat that is offline. A broad service outage can also be checked at status.nest.com.

When to stop DIY work
- The breaker will not stay on or trips repeatedly.
- The furnace or air handler itself will not operate.
- You suspect a fuse, transformer, control board, or damaged low-voltage cable.
- Wire labels are unclear, nonstandard, or involve multiple transformers.
- You need a new C wire or Nest Power Connector installed.
- E298 remains after safe power, panel, display, and wire-seating checks.
- You are uncomfortable working near HVAC electrical equipment.
At that point, contact a licensed HVAC professional or Google/Nest support rather than measuring live wiring or continuing to move conductors. Google’s community discussions may mention an undetected R-wire signal, but Google’s current documentation uses the broader “No system power” diagnosis.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is E298 the same as a Wi‑Fi error?
No. E298 is a no-system-power error. Wi‑Fi loss can occur as a consequence of the thermostat not receiving HVAC power.
Does E298 prove the Nest thermostat is defective?
No. Breakers, service switches, equipment panels, wiring, common-wire power, fuses, transformers, and control boards can all be involved.
Will E298 clear automatically?
It normally clears only after the missing HVAC power or wiring problem is corrected. A restart may refresh the display afterward but does not replace the repair.
Is E298 the same as E448 or E299?
Google groups E298 and E448 under “No system power.” Do not assume other E codes have the same cause; check the exact code for your model.
