A major reconstruction and safety project at Interstate 55 Exit 93 in Cape Girardeau County is now scheduled to start in spring 2027, according to an October 26, 2026 report from KFVS. Construction is expected to last about two years. The work will rehabilitate three bridges, replace the Silver Springs Road traffic signals with a two-lane roundabout, and change access around Route 74 and Exit 93A. MoDOT has not yet awarded the contract, so exact closure dates, detours and the final completion date remain unsettled.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) describes the job as an intersection-improvement project in Cape Girardeau County. It focuses on the interchange connecting southbound Kingshighway traffic with I-55 and Route 74, including the US 61/Kingshighway flyover commonly identified as Exit 93.

The flyover will be rehabilitated rather than replaced. MoDOT says the structure, built in 1961, is in poor condition and carries more than 6,000 vehicles per day. After inspections by MoDOT and consulting engineers, the agency determined that rehabilitation could extend the bridge’s service life.

That timing comes from MoDOT Resident Engineer Zachary Lee in KFVS’s October 26, 2026 report. No contractor had been awarded when that report was published, and the eventual contract will include hard deadlines intended to limit traffic disruption.

MoDOT’s project page and an August 2024 release still contain an earlier planning sequence: tentative letting in February 2026, construction as early as April 2026, and completion in fall or winter 2028. Those dates predate the October 2026 update and should not be treated as current commitments. A firm completion date should wait for MoDOT’s contract and subsequent construction notices.
How will traffic change during construction?
Drivers should expect traffic controls throughout the project. KFVS reports that the first two to three months are planned to use one-lane, head-to-head traffic so crews can complete bridge work more quickly. In that arrangement, opposing traffic shares one side of the roadway under temporary controls, so queues and slower travel are possible.

What drivers should do
- Check MoDOT’s live traffic information before leaving, particularly during the first months of bridge work.

Will the Silver Springs Road intersection become a roundabout?
Yes. The project replaces the existing signals at Silver Springs Road and Business 61 with a two-lane roundabout, built in stages so traffic can continue moving through the intersection.
MoDOT’s materials identify safety as a primary reason for the change. The agency says a conventional signalized intersection has approximately 20 to 30 conflict points, while a roundabout has eight. Its design includes a truck apron—a mountable area around the central island—to accommodate school buses, semitrailers and farm equipment.
Are Exit 93 ramps closing?
Some southbound merge movements from Route 74 and Exit 93A are included in MoDOT’s phase-one plan, but the final closure sequence and dates have not been published. The project also changes access around Route 74 while bridge and flyover work proceeds. Until a contractor’s traffic-control plan and MoDOT notices are issued, drivers should not assume a particular ramp will be open or closed on a specific day.

What is the project’s cost and funding status?
A Missouri programmed-project listing showed $10.649 million for project 9P3122 in 2024. That figure is a planning amount, not a confirmed construction award. The final price could only be established after MoDOT lets the project and awards a contract.
MoDOT describes the roundabout as phase one of a broader concept; additional phases depend on future funding. That means later improvements should not be treated as part of the currently scheduled construction unless the agency announces funding and a separate scope.
