LIRA-FEM 2026 is a commercial finite-element platform for analysing and designing buildings and infrastructure. Its core method is the finite-element method (FEM): the engineer builds a structural model, assigns stiffness and restraints, applies loads and combinations, solves the equations, and reviews displacements, forces and stresses. The 2026 R1 release broadens that workflow with updated meshing, dynamic and nonlinear solvers, BIM exchange, stress recovery and automation.

The release is relevant to reinforced-concrete, steel, composite, masonry, civil, industrial, tower, bridge, crane and runway projects. It supports static, dynamic, seismic, thermal, blast and fire-resistance calculations, but the governing design code, edition and modelling assumptions still have to be confirmed for each project.

What is LIRA-FEM 2026 and what changed in R1?

LIRA-FEM 2026 R1 is an engineering analysis environment built around FEM. The vendor describes its calculation principle in direct terms: “Расчет производится по методу конечных элементов (МКЭ),” or “Calculation is performed by the finite-element method.” R1 keeps that foundation while adding controls intended to improve model preparation, analysis coverage and result interpretation.

The most consequential changes are a calculation-scheme checker, analytical-plane tools, automatic or manual reinforced-concrete effective-length assignment, mesh-refinement functions, updated plate elements, expanded dynamic analysis and broader BIM/API workflows. The release notes also report that analytical-model triangulation is 2–4 times faster than in previous versions, a LIRALAND Group 2026 claim rather than an independent benchmark.

How does LIRA-FEM calculate building structures?

The calculation follows the standard FEM chain: discretise the structure, define physical and mechanical properties, apply actions and restraints, solve the selected analysis case, then check design results. The software supports bar, plate, shell, solid and specialised elements, allowing one model to combine members, slabs, walls, foundations and three-dimensional regions.

  1. Build the geometry. Nodes and finite elements represent the analytical structure. Analytical planes can align and trim model geometry associatively, which is useful when floor, wall or shell boundaries change.
  2. Assign properties. Material laws, section properties, thicknesses, releases, supports and foundation conditions define stiffness and mass. Reinforced-concrete effective lengths can be assigned automatically or manually.
  3. Apply actions. Typical cases include self-weight, roof, snow, wind, moving, curved-surface and fragment loads. Loads can be organised into individual cases and combinations.
  4. Select the solver. Linear static, modal, time-history, response-spectrum, nonlinear, thermal, blast or fire-resistance tasks are chosen according to the engineering question.
  5. Review results. Displacements, member forces, plate forces, reactions and stress fields can be examined for each case or governing combination, then transferred into design and reporting workflows.

For snow actions, R1 includes automatic collection for flat, inclined, variable-thickness, single-pitch, double-pitch and vaulted roofs. The applicable national snow standard must still be selected and checked against the project location.

Which analysis regimes does LIRA-FEM 2026 support?

The official task list spans the principal regimes used for buildings and infrastructure. Availability of a regime does not by itself determine whether a model is adequate; element formulation, load definition, damping, soil assumptions and code requirements remain engineering decisions.

Regime Documented capabilities Typical questions answered
Static Individual load cases and combinations, including self-weight, snow, wind, moving, curved-surface and fragment loads Strength, stiffness, reactions and serviceability under prescribed actions
Dynamic and seismic Modal superposition, direct time-history loading, response spectra, Ritz vectors and selective element-mass treatment Natural modes, seismic response and transient behaviour
Nonlinear Iterative solver controls, nonlinear materials, iterative bars and plates, and nonlinear elastic links Load redistribution, yielding, unloading and loss of a link or support action
Thermal Thermal calculation tasks for structural models Effects of temperature fields and thermal actions
Blast and fire resistance Dedicated blast and fire-resistance calculation tasks Response to accidental actions and fire scenarios

Does LIRA-FEM 2026 support nonlinear and seismic analysis?

Yes. R1 adds wider dynamic options and revises nonlinear iteration and element behaviour, making the release suitable for more than linear static checks.

Dynamic and seismic methods

Direct dynamic loading uses a time-history system, while modal superposition can represent seismic and other dynamic responses. Optional Ritz vectors select modes that contribute most strongly to a chosen excitation, which can reduce the need to retain every mathematically available mode. Direct-integration tasks can apply mass selectively to elements rather than treating the entire model identically.

A dynamic-load inheritance module separates modal or inertial calculations from a later flexible-foundation response. Response spectra can be built from three-component accelerograms. The ReSpectrum workflow accounts for layered-soil shear modulus and damping changing with strain level, so soil parameters are not necessarily treated as constant over the response range.

Nonlinear dampers can use power-law force–velocity relationships and vector combinations of X, Y and Z motion. These features are relevant to isolation and energy-dissipation systems, but the engineer must supply calibrated properties and justify the selected direction-combination rules.

Nonlinear iteration and link failure

The nonlinear solver has revised accuracy criteria and iteration controls intended to reduce ineffective iterations. A nonlinear elastic link can be driven to zero ordinate to represent failure or shutoff. Iterative bar and plate elements were revised for unloading, force calculation and nonlinear material behaviour, which matters when the loading path includes stiffness degradation or redistribution rather than a single monotonic elastic step.

Which finite elements and stress results are available?

R1 introduces MITC3 and MITC4 plate elements. Their formulation is intended to reduce shear and membrane locking in thin and thick structures, including models with coarse or irregular meshes. Plate stiffness can be modified independently for membrane, bending and shear components, including orthotropic forms, allowing directional materials or layered behaviour to be represented more deliberately.

The LITERA processor calculates principal and equivalent stresses for individual loadings and governing combinations. R1 extends stress recovery to arbitrary bar-section shapes, automatic cross-section subdivision, nodal stresses for linear solid elements and equivalent beam forces. For heterogeneous materials with different tensile and compressive limits, the Pisarенко–Lebedev strength theory is documented as an available option.

These outputs are only as meaningful as the mesh, boundary conditions and material model. A refined stress contour does not compensate for an incorrect restraint, an omitted load path or an unsuitable element type.

How does the release check a calculation model?

R1 adds several controls aimed at catching modelling errors before interpretation of results. The calculation-scheme checker examines geometry, topology, element properties, loads and boundary conditions. Automatic mesh refinement and plate subdivision help target regions where a coarse discretisation could distort stiffness or stress results.

Analytical-plane controls support associative alignment and trimming, reducing manual edits when connected surfaces change. Effective-length assignment for reinforced-concrete members can be automated or overridden manually, so the engineer can use project-specific assumptions instead of accepting a single default.

These tools are verification aids, not substitutes for an independent engineering review. A successful model check means the defined scheme is internally consistent; it does not prove that the idealisation matches the real structure.

Can LIRA-FEM import Revit, Tekla, Rhino or ETABS models?

Yes. BIM and analysis exchange are treated as core workflows in R1, with staged updates, filtering and selective synchronisation intended to avoid rebuilding an entire model after every design change.

Source or interface Documented capability Practical use
IFC Staged import, selective updates, building filters and synchronisation with BIM objects Bring only changed buildings or objects into an analytical workflow
SAF Expanded SAF exchange Transfer structural-analysis data between compatible applications
Revit Dedicated integration Coordinate architectural/structural BIM information with the FEM model
Tekla Structures Integration documented for Tekla Structures 2025 Exchange detailed steel or concrete models
Rhino and Grasshopper Integration with Rhino 8 and Grasshopper Use parametric or computational geometry in model generation
ETABS ETABS .e2k import through meshed-model and physical-model paths Migrate an existing ETABS model while choosing the appropriate representation

Import is not the same as automatic validation. After any exchange, confirm units, axes, connectivity, releases, section orientation, load mapping, combinations and support conditions in the receiving model.

How can engineers automate LIRA-FEM 2026?

The COM API supports input-table creation and correction, result mosaics, isofields and diagrams, custom Generator nodes, plug-ins, report-book sections, CSV tables and screenshots. The documented language options include C#, C++, Python, JavaScript and VBScript.

This enables repeatable model generation, batch corrections, standardised result extraction and project-specific reporting. A useful automation pattern is to keep geometry and load data in controlled input tables, generate the model through the API, run the required cases, export selected result fields and retain the input and output files together for review.

Automation should include checks for missing properties, disconnected nodes, unexpected units and changed combinations. A script that runs without an error is not evidence that the engineering model is correct.

Which design codes and standards does LIRA-FEM 2026 support?

The official static-analysis material lists Eurocodes and several national or regional standards, including EN 1990, DBN/DSTU, Kazakhstan SP RK EN 1990, IBC-2000, ACI 318-95, BAEL-91, Soviet SNiP, Belarusian standards and Russian SP 20.13330.2011/2016.

Code support must be read alongside the project brief. Confirm the country, authority, adopted edition, national annexes, load combinations and material provisions before using a result for design approval. A software menu that contains a standard name does not establish that the authority has accepted every calculation option in that edition.

Is LIRA-FEM 2026 faster or easier to automate?

The only quantitative performance figure identified for this release is the vendor-reported 2–4× acceleration of analytical-model triangulation by LIRALAND Group in 2026 compared with previous versions. It is not an independent benchmark, and it should not be generalized to total solve time, every model size or every computer.

Ease of automation is better assessed by the specific workflow: whether the required input tables are exposed, whether result objects can be exported in the needed format, whether custom Generator nodes fit the team’s process and whether the chosen language can be maintained under project quality controls.

How should engineers compare LIRA-FEM with another solver?

A meaningful comparison should use the project’s governing analysis and delivery requirements rather than a single speed claim. Check the following axes:

  • Linear, nonlinear, dynamic, seismic, thermal, blast and fire-resistance regimes required by the brief.
  • Bar, plate, shell and solid formulations, including locking treatment and orthotropic stiffness options.
  • Mesh controls, model-checking tools and the ability to verify restraints, topology and load transfer.
  • Soil-dependent dynamics, response-spectrum construction, dampers and flexible-foundation workflows.
  • Design-code coverage for the exact jurisdiction and adopted edition.
  • IFC, SAF and discipline-specific exchange with the applications used by the project team.
  • API depth, supported languages, reporting options and auditability of automated changes.
  • Project-scale performance measured under the team’s own hardware, model complexity and acceptance criteria.

What should be checked before relying on a LIRA-FEM result?

Before a result enters a design decision, document the assumptions that control it. A concise review sequence is:

  1. Confirm the project code, national annex, material grades and load factors.
  2. Check geometry, connectivity, element orientation, releases, supports and foundation assumptions.
  3. Verify that every required action is present and mapped to the intended case and combination.
  4. Review mesh density and refine regions with steep gradients, openings, supports or concentrated loads.
  5. For dynamic work, verify mass source, damping, mode or Ritz-vector selection, soil properties and direction combinations.
  6. For nonlinear work, record constitutive laws, convergence tolerances, unloading rules and any link shutoff condition.
  7. Compare reactions and global equilibrium with hand checks or an independent calculation route where the project requires it.
  8. Archive the model version, input data, solver settings, result selections and design-code edition used for the decision.

LIRA-FEM 2026 is therefore best understood as a broad FEM platform whose R1 improvements address model fidelity, advanced loading, interoperability and automation. Its capabilities can support demanding structural studies, but engineering judgement and project-specific verification remain essential.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can LIRA-FEM 2026 perform fire-resistance calculations for every building code?

The task list includes fire-resistance analysis, but that does not mean every national fire-design rule is implemented. Check the supported material models, thermal assumptions and adopted code edition against the authority requirements for the project.

What is the difference between ETABS physical-model and meshed-model import?

A physical-model import carries the structural objects and their relationships, while a meshed-model import transfers the finite-element representation already generated in the source file. The choice affects how much geometry and connectivity must be rebuilt or checked after import.

Do MITC3 and MITC4 eliminate the need for mesh-convergence checks?

No. Their formulation is intended to reduce shear and membrane locking, but convergence still depends on geometry, loading, boundary conditions and stress gradients. Refine the mesh and compare key responses when the result is sensitive to discretisation.

Can the COM API run LIRA-FEM calculations without manual interaction?

The API is documented for creating and correcting input tables, handling results and extending reports and generators. A fully unattended pipeline still requires project-specific scripting, licensing and error-handling arrangements, plus an engineering review of generated models.
