Blueair is Consumer Reports’ best air-purifier brand in its 2025 brand analysis. But that does not make every Blueair model the right choice—or make a lower-ranked brand unusable. Consumer Reports evaluates eligible brands using tested model performance, noise, energy use, room coverage, predicted reliability, owner satisfaction, and price.
This ranking applies to portable room air cleaners, not whole-house systems or every manufacturer on the market. The best purchase still depends on your room size, pollutant, noise tolerance, and recurring filter cost.

What Consumer Reports is actually ranking
Consumer Reports published its “Best Air Purifier Brands” analysis on September 16, 2025. Its comparison is not a simple tally of “true HEPA” labels or advertised square-foot claims.

- WHY CHOOSE AHAM VERIFIDE AIR PURIFIERS: AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) is an ANSI-accredited organization that sets strict standards for appliance performance. Air purifiers with the AHAM VERIFIDE seal have been independently tested for air cleaning performance and energy efficiency. When you choose an AHAM certified air purifier, you're choosing a product trusted for reliable and effective indoor air quality improvement
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE AIR PURIFICATION: A powerful 56W high-torque motor and 143 CFM CADR delivers fast, effective cleaning. The Levoit Original Filter is HEPA-grade while operating in Sleep Mode (Based on IEST RP C001.7). Ideal for home, bedroom, or office
- AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
- GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
- FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
- Dust, pollen, and smoke removal at low and high fan speeds
- Noise at low and high speeds
- Energy use and room-size coverage
- Predicted reliability and owner satisfaction
- Purchase price and ownership costs
- The number and consistency of tested models
That distinction matters. A brand-level result describes the performance of a tested lineup, not an absolute verdict on every product sold under that name.
The verified Consumer Reports result
| Position | Brand | What can be verified | Best interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best brand in CR’s 2025 analysis | Blueair | Consumer Reports identified Blueair as its 2025 best air-purifier brand. | A strong starting point, but compare the specific model’s CADR, noise, filter cost, and room category. |
| Other eligible brands | Varies by the current CR table | Brands must meet CR’s tested-model threshold to appear in the brand comparison. | Do not assume a brand is included—or assign it an exact position—without checking the current CR table. |
| Worst position | Not responsibly identifiable from the publicly visible extract | The complete current worst-to-best ordering is not exposed in the supplied public material. | A precise bottom ranking should be quoted directly from CR rather than reconstructed from snippets or retailer reviews. |
Blueair’s top position is also reported by Business Wire and referenced by Blueair’s official store. The available evidence does not support inventing a complete ordinal list of every brand from worst to best.
Why a full brand ranking should not be guessed
Consumer Reports’ current brand analysis is partly restricted, and the public search extract does not display a complete ordering. Product pages, retailer reviews, and isolated CR model scores cannot substitute for CR’s brand-level calculation.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A brand could rank below another because its tested lineup is inconsistent, noisy, expensive to operate, or weaker on reliability—not because every model fails. Conversely, a highly ranked brand can still sell a model that is too small for your room, too loud for a bedroom, or costly to maintain.
For that reason, “worst” should mean lowest among the eligible brands in CR’s current table, not “unsafe,” “worthless,” or “bad in every situation.”
How to choose among the tested brands
1. Size by CADR, not just square-foot marketing
CADR, or clean air delivery rate, measures how much filtered air a purifier delivers. Higher CADR generally means faster particle removal.
Rank #2

AHAM’s sizing rule recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room’s area. For a 120-square-foot room:
120 × 0.67 = approximately 80 tobacco-smoke CADR
Use the formula as a starting point, then size up for ceilings higher than eight feet, open floor plans, or heavy smoke events. The AHAM Verifide directory can help compare certified room-air-cleaner information.
The EPA also recommends choosing a CADR appropriate for the intended room, while noting that CADR is generally measured at the purifier’s highest speed. A manufacturer’s large coverage figure may therefore describe a different operating assumption than a reader expects.
2. Look at low-speed performance
High-speed scores reveal a purifier’s maximum cleaning ability. Low-speed performance may matter more in real homes because people are more likely to run a quieter setting continuously—especially in bedrooms, nurseries, and living areas.
CR measures both low- and high-speed particle removal and noise. A powerful purifier that is too loud to use may deliver less practical benefit than a slightly weaker model that can run all day.

3. Separate particles from odors and gases
HEPA-style mechanical filtration is mainly for airborne particles such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke particles. The EPA states that CADR measures particle removal, not gas removal.

Odors and volatile organic compounds require gas-phase filtration, usually activated carbon. The amount and design of carbon matter; a thin carbon-coated filter should not automatically be treated like a purifier containing a substantial carbon bed.
For cooking fumes, solvents, formaldehyde, or renovation odors, source control and ventilation remain important. A purifier is supplementary rather than a complete gas-removal solution.
4. Calculate ongoing cost
Purchase price is only the beginning. CR’s ratings can show annual electricity and filter costs for individual models. Compare:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Purchase price
- Annual electricity cost
- Replacement-filter price and interval
- Whether official filters are easy to obtain
- Warranty coverage and support
- Any subscription or proprietary-filter arrangement
CR’s operating-cost assumptions include continuous operation, electricity, and filter replacement. A $100 small-room purifier should not be compared directly with a $1,000 large-room model without accounting for the amount of air each can clean.
Use-case guidance
Allergies, dust, and pets
Prioritize smoke, dust, and pollen CADR; low-speed performance; manageable noise; and a washable or accessible pre-filter that can catch hair and larger debris. A purifier filters airborne particles. It does not remove allergens from carpets, bedding, or furniture once they have settled.
Wildfire smoke
Choose more capacity than the bare minimum when practical, run the unit continuously, and prioritize strong smoke CADR. Smoke includes particles and gases, so activated carbon may help with some odors and gaseous pollutants, but a particle-focused purifier is not a complete solution for every component of smoke.

- 𝟒 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐬 & 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲-𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠: The room air purifier has 4 adjustable fan speeds. You can choose the fan speed according to the air quality. The higher the wind speed, the faster the purification speed. When you are out or resting, you can set the air purifier to automatically shut off after 2/4/6/8 hours to reduce energy costs. Running at maximum wind speed for 24 hours only consumes 0.63 kW·h of electricity
- 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝐝𝐁 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬: Choose our quiet air purifier for bedroom. Noise is as low as 20dB in sleep mode. Low noise, low speed and no lights make it perfect for a good night's sleep. Even light-sleeping babies or pets can enjoy fresh and clean air on quiet nights
Bedrooms and nurseries
Focus on low-speed noise, dimmable controls, dependable overnight operation, filter availability, and the absence of intentional ozone generation. Do not compare decibel figures casually unless the test conditions and fan speeds are equivalent.
Large rooms and open layouts
Room-size labels are difficult to compare across brands. Doorways, ceiling height, furniture, and airflow patterns all affect performance. One larger unit—or multiple appropriately sized units—may work better than relying on a generous advertised coverage number.
Odors and VOCs
Choose only when there is credible information about gas filtration and carbon quantity. Do not treat a HEPA label or a high particle CADR as proof of odor removal.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Technology claims that need caution
“True HEPA,” “H13,” smart sensors, UV, plasma, ionization, and permanent-filter claims do not replace whole-device performance.
- Mechanical filtration: captures particles through a filter and fan.
- Activated carbon: can adsorb some gases and odors; more carbon is generally preferable.
- Ionizers, plasma, and electrostatic systems: require scrutiny for effectiveness and ozone emissions.
- UV: should not be treated as a general replacement for particle filtration.
- Smart features: improve convenience but do not compensate for weak CADR or high filter costs.
The EPA advises avoiding portable air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone because ozone irritates the lungs. Ionizers, some electrostatic precipitators, plasma devices, and certain UV systems may have ozone-emission potential. The EPA also does not certify or recommend specific air-purifier brands or models.

“Never-change” or “permanent” filters deserve the same scrutiny. Check what the claim actually covers, whether a washable pre-filter still needs cleaning, whether another collector is consumable, and how the model performs in independent testing.

What the CR ranking does not tell you
- It does not make every model from the leading brand a good fit.
- It does not guarantee a particular purifier will be quiet in your room.
- It does not make advertised coverage directly comparable across manufacturers.
- It does not prove that a purifier removes odors or VOCs.
- It does not solve mold growth, moisture problems, or poor ventilation.
- It does not guarantee filter availability or unchanged pricing.
For mold, filtration may capture some airborne particles, but it does not remove established mold or fix the moisture source. For cooking smoke, a properly vented range hood remains source control.
