What you genuinely need
The minimum viable kit is a properly fitting Phillips screwdriver, the motherboard and case manuals, a clean and well-lit work surface, and the screws, brackets, cables, and accessories supplied with your components.
A magnetic PH2 driver is the best general-purpose choice for most case, power-supply, motherboard, and expansion-card screws. Some M.2 drives and compact systems use smaller screws, so a driver kit containing PH0, PH1, and PH2 bits is more versatile. Screw sizes vary by manufacturer; there is no single bit that fits every PC screw. iFixit likewise notes that standard computers typically need only a few hand tools, with smaller Phillips drivers, nut drivers, and screw starters being situational conveniences. iFixit’s computer-repair guidance

Prevent stripped screws
- Use the largest bit that fully fills the screw head.
- Keep the driver vertical and apply firm downward pressure.
- Turn slowly, especially when starting a screw in a motherboard standoff.
- Stop if the bit slips or the head begins to deform.
- Do not force a motherboard against a misplaced case standoff.
ESD protection without the fearmongering
Electrostatic discharge is worth taking seriously, but an anti-static wrist strap is not a universal requirement. Work on a hard, non-carpeted surface, avoid dragging your feet across carpet, and touch a grounded metal part of the case before handling components and periodically during the build. A wrist strap provides a more repeatable precaution, particularly in a dry environment or for an inexperienced builder.
Never attach a strap to an unsafe or unverified electrical ground. An anti-static bag is packaging, not a work mat; do not operate the motherboard while it is sitting inside the bag because its exterior may be conductive. NVIDIA recommends grounding yourself on the case or using a static bracelet and advises against building on carpet. See NVIDIA’s workspace guidance.
Why lighting and small tools matter
Dark interiors, recessed front-panel pins, bottom-mounted power-supply shrouds, hidden M.2 screws, and cable channels behind the motherboard tray make a flashlight surprisingly valuable. A headlamp is preferable because it leaves both hands free; a phone flashlight also works if it can be positioned safely.

Cable management: useful, not essential
Cable ties do not make a PC boot. They do improve access, airflow, and future maintenance. Reusable Velcro straps are the better default for most builders because they can be opened during upgrades. Nylon zip ties are compact and secure for permanent routing; use side cutters to trim them and avoid leaving sharp ends. Do not overtighten ties around sleeved or delicate cables.
Thermal paste and cleaning supplies
Do not automatically buy thermal paste. Many stock and aftermarket coolers include a syringe, while others arrive with paste already applied. Buy a small tube when the cooler lacks compound, when the supplied paste is contaminated or lost, or when you expect to remove and reinstall the cooler.
- Check whether the cooler already has paste applied.
- If it does, do not add another layer.
- If applying paste manually, follow the cooler manufacturer’s instructions.
- Mount the cooler evenly without repeatedly lifting it.
- If you remove the cooler after contact, clean both surfaces and apply fresh paste.

Compressed air or an electric duster is useful for later maintenance but is not required to assemble a new PC.
Why a USB drive belongs in the toolkit
A USB drive is useful before and after assembly. It can hold Windows or Linux installation media, motherboard BIOS files, firmware-recovery tools, and hardware diagnostics.
For a general-purpose kit, choose a reputable 16 GB or 32 GB drive and label it. Back up anything important before creating bootable media because the process can erase the drive. Microsoft’s instructions specify at least 5 GB of free space for its manual Windows installation process, while a larger drive provides more flexibility for drivers and diagnostic utilities. Microsoft’s Windows USB instructions warn that the drive will be formatted. iFixit recommends a name-brand USB 3.0 drive of 32 GB or more for flexibility. iFixit’s installation-media guide

Prepare installation media
- On a working computer, download Windows installation media from Microsoft or obtain a Linux image from its official project.
- Insert a USB drive with no important files.
- Use Microsoft’s media-creation process or a reputable ISO-writing utility.
- Confirm the correct USB drive before approving the erase operation.
- Insert the completed drive into the new PC.
- Open the motherboard’s boot menu or firmware setup and select the USB device.
The boot-menu key varies by motherboard, so use the board manual or vendor support page rather than assuming one universal key. Prepare before opening the boxes
- Confirm the parts list and motherboard compatibility.
- Download the motherboard manual and check whether the installed CPU may require a BIOS update.
- Prepare operating-system and diagnostic media on another computer.
- Clear a large, dry, hard, non-carpeted work surface.
- Gather the screwdriver, light, small tools, cleaning supplies, cable ties, and USB drive.
- Keep screws organized by component.
- Keep the CPU protected in its packaging until you are ready to install it.
First boot: check these connections
- 24-pin motherboard power is connected.
- CPU EPS power is connected.
- Required GPU auxiliary power is connected.
- RAM is fully latched in the motherboard’s recommended slots.
- The GPU is fully seated.
- The cooler fan is connected to the CPU_FAN header.
- The front-panel power-switch connector is correctly placed.
- The monitor is connected to the GPU when a discrete GPU is installed.
- The power supply is switched on.
- No loose screws remain inside the case.
Perform this inspection before closing the case completely or spending time on final cable routing. Modular power-supply cables deserve special attention: use only cables supplied with that exact power supply. Modular cables are not universally interchangeable, even when their connectors appear to fit.
If the PC does not POST
- Turn the power supply off and unplug the system.
- Check the motherboard’s CPU, DRAM, VGA, or BOOT diagnostic LEDs or display.
- Reseat the RAM and test one module in the slot recommended by the manual.
- Reseat the GPU and verify its power cable.
- Check the 24-pin and CPU EPS connectors.
- Confirm that the monitor is connected to the correct output. A motherboard video output works only when the CPU provides integrated graphics.
- Clear CMOS according to the motherboard manual.
- Test with only the CPU, cooler, one RAM module, power supply, and required display hardware.
- Check whether the board needs a BIOS update for the installed CPU.
- Consult the motherboard vendor before replacing parts or flashing firmware.
Do not blindly flash a BIOS. File names, USB-port requirements, update methods, and recovery procedures vary by motherboard.
Tools you probably do not need
For a normal new desktop build, you generally do not need a soldering iron, multimeter, expensive professional toolkit, anti-static mat, specialized GPU-support tool, thermal-paste spreader, or compressed-air duster. A professional kit becomes worthwhile if you regularly repair laptops, consoles, phones, or multiple PCs. Otherwise, buying a quality magnetic screwdriver and a few conditional supplies is usually better value than purchasing a large kit.

Choose a kit by build type
Bare minimum
Use a magnetic Phillips driver, a flashlight or phone light, the motherboard and case manuals, and a reputable USB drive. This is enough for many standard ATX and microATX builds if the cooler includes thermal paste.
Recommended home kit
Add a small precision-bit set, anti-static wrist strap, headlamp, tweezers or needle-nose pliers, reusable Velcro straps, side cutters, thermal paste if your cooler needs it, isopropyl alcohol, and lint-free wipes.
Frequent builder or repairer kit
Choose a quality organized electronics toolkit, parts tray, spare USB drive, dedicated diagnostic media, and optionally a POST speaker if your motherboard supports one. This is where extra bits, nut drivers, extensions, and an anti-static strap earn their cost.

- Mini-ITX: Precision drivers, tweezers, and a headlamp are more valuable because clearances are tight.
- Tool-free M.2 retention: A precision screwdriver may not be needed.
- Used parts: Add cleaning supplies and inspect for missing screws and standoffs.
- Liquid cooling: Keep paper towels available for installation and leak-checking, but do not assume special tools are required.
- Newer graphics cards: Follow the specific GPU and power-supply instructions for 16-pin 12V-2×6 or 6+2-pin PCIe connections.
- BIOS compatibility issue: A USB drive may be needed before the system can boot, but the update method is board-specific.
The Bottom Line
For most desktop builds, the only near-universal physical requirement is a properly fitting Phillips screwdriver. A headlamp, ESD precaution, USB drive, and a few small tools are inexpensive additions that prevent common build-day problems and make no-POST troubleshooting far easier.
