You cannot import an FBX file directly into current versions of Revit. Autodesk’s current guidance recommends converting the file through FormIt, Navisworks, or 3ds Max instead. Choose FormIt for geometry and materials, Navisworks for coordination, or 3ds Max for a DWG-based workflow.
Can Revit import FBX directly?
No. Current Revit versions do not provide a direct FBX import command. The Insert > Import CAD tool is not an FBX importer, and FBX is not included in Revit 2026’s documented supported CAD and 3D formats. See Autodesk’s current support guidance and the Revit 2026 supported-format list.

Do not rename .fbx to .dwg, .obj, or .stl. Changing the extension does not convert the file. Also distinguish Revit-to-FBX export from FBX-to-Revit import: the former does not mean Revit can read FBX natively.
Choose the right workaround

Method 1: Convert FBX to AXM with FormIt
This is usually the best route when appearance and usable 3D geometry matter. FormIt for Windows supports FBX import and AXM export. Autodesk documents the AXM-to-Revit workflow for Revit 2022 and later.

- Open FormIt for Windows.
- Set FormIt’s project units to match the FBX and the intended Revit project.
- Import the
.fbxfile. - Check scale, orientation, origin, geometry, materials, and texture paths.
- Save or export the FormIt model as an
.axmfile. - Open the Revit project or family.
- Go to Insert > Import CAD.
- Select the AXM file, choose the positioning and import options, and open it.
- Use a 3D view and switch the visual style to Realistic if materials or textures are expected.
The result is imported FormIt geometry. According to the FormIt FAQ, the conversion generally creates mass- or DirectShape-based content. It does not automatically reconstruct native Revit walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows, or parametric families.
When FormIt is the best choice
- The model is a conceptual mass, site model, or visual asset.
- Materials and visual appearance matter.
- You can use the imported geometry as a reference and remodel key elements natively.
- You accept that the result is not a fully editable BIM model.
Method 2: Link the FBX through Navisworks
Use Navisworks when the FBX is needed for coordination, review, clash detection, or visual comparison—not for editing as Revit elements. Autodesk documents a workflow in which Navisworks appends the FBX and Revit links the resulting NWC coordination model.
- Open Autodesk Navisworks and start a new file.
- Use Append to add the FBX.
- Check the model’s scale, position, and orientation.
- Save the Navisworks file if required.
- Close Navisworks so the NWC cache can be created or released.
- Open the Revit project.
- Go to Insert > Coordination Model.
- Link the available
.nwcfile. - Use the appropriate origin or shared-coordinate method and verify the result in a 3D view.
The result is a linked coordination model, not a Revit family or collection of editable walls and floors. Autodesk’s InfraWorks-to-Revit guidance also warns that InfraWorks materials do not display in Revit through this coordination-model route.

Prefer Navisworks when the model is large or complex, native editing is unnecessary, and keeping the reference model linked is better than embedding heavy geometry in the Revit project.
Method 3: Convert FBX to DWG with 3ds Max
This route is appropriate when your project requires a CAD intermediary and you have access to 3ds Max.
- Open Autodesk 3ds Max.
- Import the FBX.
- Verify units, scale, orientation, origin, and geometry.
- Remove unnecessary objects and simplify the model if possible.
- Export it as a DWG using the appropriate AutoCAD DWG exporter.
- In Revit, select Insert > Import CAD or Insert > Link CAD.
- Select the DWG and set import units, layers, colors, positioning, placement, and orientation.
Do not follow older instructions telling you to import FBX directly into current AutoCAD. Autodesk states that FBX import and export were removed from AutoCAD products beginning with AutoCAD 2019. The documented Autodesk route uses 3ds Max instead; see Autodesk’s FBX support notice.

Link the DWG when it will be updated externally; import it when you need a snapshot. The Revit import options include units, layers, positioning, and Current View Only. Complex FBX meshes may become large collections of faceted CAD faces. Materials and textures may be lost, and exploding imported CAD geometry can reduce model performance.

If the source application can export a Revit-supported format, that may be better than forcing an FBX conversion.
- IFC: Prefer it when the source contains actual building elements and metadata. Revit 2026 can link IFC files with origin-to-origin or shared-coordinate positioning. IFC quality depends heavily on the source exporter, and a visual-only FBX contains little BIM information to preserve.
- OBJ or STL: Use these for a simple mesh when materials, animation, and BIM semantics are unnecessary. Revit documents OBJ and STL as supported 3D-shape import formats.
- SAT, 3DM, SKP, or other supported formats: Use the source application’s native or more suitable export when it provides cleaner solids or surfaces.
Imported 3D shapes are not automatically Revit families. They provide reference or categorized geometry, not parametric construction elements. See Autodesk’s 3D-shape import documentation.

Fix scale, coordinates, and visibility problems
The model is invisible
- Open a 3D view and use Zoom to Fit.
- Check whether the model is far from the Revit internal origin.
- Verify the active view, category visibility, filters, worksets, and coordination-model visibility.
- Check whether the geometry landed on another level or work plane.
- Test a simplified copy located near the origin.
The model is the wrong size
Do not randomly resize it in Revit first. Confirm the FBX export units, FormIt project units, Revit project units, and the converter’s interpretation of meters, centimetres, millimetres, feet, or inches. A unit mismatch is more likely than a Revit geometry problem.
The model is in the wrong location
For infrastructure or geographic models, use a deliberate origin and coordinate strategy. The source export may require a user-defined origin, explicit offsets, or matching project base-point and shared-coordinate values. Autodesk’s InfraWorks workflow specifically discusses user-defined origins and coordinate offsets.

With FormIt, confirm that materials loaded before exporting AXM, that texture image paths remain available, and that Revit is using Realistic display. Do not expect the Navisworks coordination route to preserve all source materials.

Revit becomes slow
Reduce polygon count, delete hidden objects, remove unused materials and textures, and import a simplified test file first. Use a linked Navisworks coordination model when the geometry is only a reference. Avoid exploding imported CAD content unless there is a clear reason.
What happens after the import?
None of these workflows automatically turns a visualization mesh into a complete native Revit model. Depending on the route, you receive:
- FormIt/AXM: mass-like or DirectShape-based imported geometry.
- Navisworks/NWC: a linked coordination model.
- DWG: imported or linked CAD geometry.
- OBJ/STL: an imported 3D shape.
- IFC: a linked or imported BIM exchange model whose quality depends on the source data.
If you need schedules, parameters, hosted components, editable walls, floors, roofs, doors, or windows, use the imported model as a reference and remodel the required elements with native Revit tools—or obtain IFC or another BIM-oriented export from the source application.
