Low indoor humidity can contribute to dry or itchy skin, irritated nose and throat, itchy eyes, cracked lips, and sometimes bloody noses. Those symptoms have many possible causes, so the way to check whether dry air may be a factor is to measure your home’s relative humidity with a hygrometer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Mayo Clinic recommend a general indoor range of 30%–50% relative humidity.
What symptoms can low humidity cause?
Dry air may contribute to discomfort where the body’s surfaces are exposed to it. Mayo Clinic lists dry skin, an bothered or dry nose and throat, itchy eyes, sinus irritation, bloody noses, and cracked lips among effects associated with dry indoor air. These are clues, not a diagnosis: allergies, infections, medications, and other factors can cause similar symptoms.
A CDC-hosted report on office workers found associations between lower indoor humidity and some reported symptoms. It described more dry or itchy skin among male and female workers, more mucous-membrane symptoms among female workers, and more unusual tiredness, fatigue, or drowsiness among male workers. The findings apply to the studied office population and do not show that low humidity caused a particular person’s symptoms or that the same patterns apply to everyone. Read the CDC/NIOSH report.
If symptoms are severe, persistent, or worrying, seek appropriate medical advice rather than assuming the air in your home is responsible.

How can you tell if your home’s air is too dry?
Measure relative humidity instead of relying on symptoms or how the room feels. A hygrometer, also called a humidity or moisture gauge, shows the amount of moisture in the air. Mayo Clinic calls it the best way to test home humidity, and the EPA also recommends checking with a gauge. A separate room monitor is one option; a humidifier with a built-in humidistat can display or regulate humidity, but the reading should still guide your setting rather than guesswork.
The practical target is 30%–50% relative humidity, a range recommended by both the EPA and Mayo Clinic. This is general indoor-environment guidance, not a medical threshold that proves why someone has symptoms. The EPA also advises keeping indoor humidity below 60% to help control moisture and biological pollutants, and specifically says not to humidify above 50%.

- Face Icon Comfort Indicator: Humidity temperature gauge features face icons to indicate DRY/COMFORT/WET air conditions, quickly informs you how to adjust your humidifier or dehumidifier to achieve optimal comfort
- Highly Accurate Sensors: This temperature humidity sensor features a high accuracy of +/-1°F/°C and +/-2% to 3%RH, making it ideal for measuring dynamic environments like greenhouses
- Fast Refresh Rate: This digital indoor thermometer refreshes every 10 seconds to provide the latest updates for temperature and humidity readings
- Compact Display with Large Digits: This digital thermometer indoor outdoor features a compact LCD display with large bold digits, allowing you to read the room thermometer indoor from any angle and distance
- Multiple Placement Options: This humidistat has 3 placement options - Tabletop Stand / Magnetic Back / Hanging Mount, place the wall thermometer anywhere you wish such as living room, baby room, kitchen, greenhouse, guitar room, office or cellar
Check the room where people spend time, particularly if you plan to run a humidifier. If you see condensation on windows or dampness on nearby surfaces, the space may be receiving too much moisture; lower or stop humidification and address the moisture rather than continuing to add water to the air. Excess moisture can contribute to mold and other biological growth. EPA: Care for Your Air · EPA: Biological pollutants and indoor air quality.
Should you use a humidifier?
A humidifier adds moisture to indoor air and may ease some discomfort associated with dry nose, throat, lips, or skin. It does not establish or treat the underlying cause of symptoms. Measure humidity first; if the reading is already in the recommended range, adding moisture may be unnecessary.

Choose by upkeep, control, and household needs
Humidifier types include central systems, ultrasonic and impeller cool-mist units, evaporators, and steam vaporizers. They differ in how they add moisture and in their cleaning and maintenance needs. Consider whether the unit offers useful humidity control, how accessible its water reservoir is for cleaning, and what water its instructions specify. There is no source-established universally best type or brand.
Steam vaporizers heat water, so spilled hot water can burn. Mayo Clinic advises against buying this type if children are present. People with asthma or allergies should discuss humidifier use with a health professional.

Use it without creating a moisture problem
- Monitor the room with a hygrometer or the unit’s humidistat, and do not humidify above 50% relative humidity.
- If condensation or damp surfaces appear, lower the setting, move the unit, or reduce or stop use.
- Keep the humidifier clean and follow the manufacturer’s directions for filling, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Use low-mineral-content water if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it. EPA warns that ultrasonic and impeller units can disperse microorganisms and minerals from tank water; the possible health effects of that dispersal are not fully understood.
- If respiratory symptoms seem connected to humidifier use, stop using it and contact a physician, even if you followed its care directions.

Simple care may ease symptoms without adding moisture to the room. Mayo Clinic suggests these measures; they can relieve discomfort but do not prove that low humidity caused it.
