Lock-Rabbet Drawer Joints: How to Choose a Cutting Method and Get the Fit Right

A lock-rabbet joint interlocks drawer corners and can be cut on a table saw or router table. Learn how stock thickness, setup and test cuts determine the method and fit.

A lock-rabbet joint connects a drawer side to its front or back with interlocking profiles, creating a mechanically engaged corner and more glue area than a plain butt joint. You can cut one on a table saw or router table; the right method depends on your stock thickness, cutters and ability to guide the work securely. Whichever route you choose, make test cuts in scrap before machining drawer parts.

How a lock-rabbet joint works

Also called a drawer-lock or locking-rabbet joint, this joint uses a tongue-like projection on one piece and a matching groove or rabbet in the other. The profiles engage at the drawer corner, helping locate the parts during assembly while providing more glue surface than a simple butt joint. It is used for drawer boxes where a repeatable corner joint is useful.

It is not one fixed cutter geometry. Table-saw and router-table procedures produce mating profiles in different ways, and the required stock thickness varies with the method. Choose the procedure for your actual material and tooling rather than assuming every drawer-lock setup fits standard stock.

Choose a cutting method for your tools and stock

Method What the cited procedure uses Important fit or setup constraint
Table saw with dado setup Woodcraft’s example uses 3/4-inch drawer fronts and 1/2-inch sides, with a 1/4-inch dado width for the front groove made using the two outer blades and shims. The setup also calls for uniformly milled stock, scrap pieces, a tall auxiliary fence and a zero-clearance throat plate. Woodcraft’s table-saw method Those dimensions describe Woodcraft’s example, not a universal joint specification. Stock consistency and secure workholding matter.
Router table with dedicated drawer-lock bit A purpose-made drawer-lock bit cuts the interlocking profiles. WWGOA’s drawer-lock method and Canadian Woodworking’s drawer-lock joinery Bit height and fence position affect how the parts meet. Make test cuts and adjust the setup until the fit is right; do not assume a bit suits every stock thickness.
Router table with slot cutter One published procedure uses a 1/4-inch slot cutter with stock exactly 1/2 inch thick. It leaves parts wide during machining and trims them to final width afterward. WWGOA’s slot-cutter procedure The 1/2-inch requirement applies to this particular setup. It is not a general requirement for all drawer-lock cutters.

Consider the tools you already own, whether their cutter geometry matches your stock, how many drawers you are making, setup effort and how safely you can guide each workpiece. The available instructions document both saw and router-table approaches, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of their speed or strength across materials and cutter geometries.

Set up and cut for a reliable fit

  1. Mill the mating parts consistently. The profiles depend on stock matching the selected cutter and procedure. Woodcraft’s example uses 3/4-inch fronts with 1/2-inch sides; the cited slot-cutter method requires stock exactly 1/2 inch thick. These are method-specific dimensions, not interchangeable specifications.
  2. Make test cuts in scrap. For a router-table setup, bit height and fence location both affect the fit. Adjust one at a time, then cut and check another test piece. The dedicated-bit procedure and slot-cutter instructions both rely on test cuts rather than a universal clearance measurement. WWGOA’s dedicated-bit setup
  3. Use the workholding and orientation for your chosen method. Follow the relevant procedure’s feed direction and workpiece orientation. The cited methods describe guiding aids such as a push pad or notched push block; Woodcraft’s table-saw setup also uses an auxiliary fence and zero-clearance throat plate. Woodcraft’s setup details WWGOA’s slot-cutter procedure
  4. For the cited slot-cutter method, leave parts wide while machining. Trim to final width after the joinery is cut; the procedure recommends this sequence to remove chipping at the outfeed side.
  5. Dry-fit the corner before glue-up. Check that the mating profiles seat closely. The cited instructions advise test fitting but do not establish a single numerical clearance that applies to every setup.

How does its strength compare with a dovetail?

The joint’s interlocking shape and larger glue area are practical advantages over a plain butt joint. However, the available strength assessments are not consistent. WOOD Magazine describes a well-made lock-rabbet as less strong than a dovetail, while its Design Editor Jeff Mertz said in a 2024 video and article, “We’ve done tests that prove it’s actually stronger than half blind dovetails.” WOOD Magazine’s lock-rabbet comparison WOOD Magazine’s “Making Super-Simple Drawers” statement

Those claims should not be treated as a universal ranking: the cited material does not provide a common test protocol, measured loads, species comparison or standardized strength statistic. WOOD Magazine’s practical guidance is that a well-made lock-rabbet is adequate unless a drawer will take heavy, regular pounding. For a particular project, weigh expected abuse, appearance, material, cut quality and the tooling you can set up accurately; neither joint wins independently of those factors.

When a lock-rabbet is a sensible choice

  • Choose it when you want an interlocking drawer corner and can match your stock to a suitable table-saw or router-table setup.
  • Choose a router-table method when you have compatible tooling and can tune bit height and fence position with scrap cuts.
  • Consider a dovetail when its traditional visible appearance matters or the drawer is expected to endure heavy, regular pounding; the cited guidance does not establish a universal strength advantage for every dovetail or lock-rabbet.
  • For plywood drawer boxes, verify that the selected cutter procedure supports the actual panel thickness. The cited examples do not establish a single lock-rabbet setup for all plywood thicknesses.

Additional table-saw instructions for drawer applications are also available from Woodsmith’s locking-rabbet guide.
