Remove unstable paint, clean and dry the area, fill any depression with a compatible paintable compound, smooth it safely, prime exposed substrate when required, and apply matching touch-up paint. If the home was built before 1978 in the United States, address possible lead paint before disturbing the surface.
Check the wall before touching the chip
Identify the substrate and the cause of the damage. This method is for a sound, painted interior wallboard surface—not wood trim, metal, masonry, vehicles, or manufactured products.

- Paint-only loss: the wall remains flat and firm. Filler is usually unnecessary.
- Gouge or divot: the surface is lower than the surrounding wall. Use a substrate-compatible, paintable patching compound or joint compound.
- Soft, crumbling, damp, or spreading damage: stop and correct the moisture or structural cause before repainting. HUD visual-assessment guidance emphasizes repairing the source of moisture damage first.
Lead-paint precautions for older U.S. homes
Federal law banned the sale of lead-based paint for residential use in the United States in 1978. In a pre-1978 home or child-occupied facility, disturbing even a small chip can create hazardous dust or paint debris. Keep children and pregnant people away from the work area and cleanup.
EPA guidance says damaged areas smaller than six square feet should be repaired without sanding. If sanding is genuinely necessary, wet the area first, minimize the work, contain debris, and clean thoroughly. Do not dry-scrape or dry-sand paint that may contain lead. EPA’s DIY guidance identifies plastic sheeting, tape, wet-dry abrasives, wipes, heavy-duty bags, and HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment as dust-control and cleanup supplies; these do not replace lead-safe procedures. For known or suspected peeling or chipping lead paint, CDC guidance favors a qualified professional. Readers outside the United States should follow their local lead-safety rules.

Choose the repair based on the damage

Step-by-step repair for a sound wall
1. Inspect the chip
Look for loose edges, a depression, exposed drywall or other substrate, staining, softness, and signs that the damage is growing. Resolve moisture problems before proceeding.
2. Remove only unstable material
On a surface confirmed not to pose a lead hazard, carefully remove flakes until the edge is firm, then smooth the transition. PPG/Sico surface-preparation guidance calls for removing loose or peeling paint and smoothing edges. For old or uncertain coatings, do not dry-scrape or dry-sand; follow lead-safe guidance instead.

3. Clean and dry the area
Remove dust and residue with a method compatible with the existing coating and substrate. Allow the surface to dry completely. Paint will not adhere reliably to dust or dampness.

For a gouge, use an interior wall patching compound or joint compound identified as suitable for the substrate and depth. Apply only enough to bring the patch slightly proud of the surrounding surface, and follow the package’s drying and application instructions. A flat paint-only chip generally does not need filler.

5. Smooth the repair with dust control
Once the compound is dry, smooth the patch so it is level with the wall. Minimize sanding. Never dry-sand suspect lead paint; use the applicable EPA method or professional service.
6. Prime exposed substrate when required
Bare drywall, compound, or another exposed substrate may absorb paint differently from the surrounding finish. PPG/Sico guidance recommends a suitable primer for bare spots. Select a primer compatible with both the substrate and the existing coating rather than assuming one product works everywhere.

7. Apply compatible touch-up paint
Use paint that matches the existing color and sheen as closely as practical. Follow the paint label for application and drying. A small brush can limit paint to the prepared area, but no brush technique or single coat guarantees an invisible repair.

Use the original can when available and confirm that the color and sheen are the same. Aged paint, fading, sheen variation, surface texture, and differences in application can leave a touch-up visible even when the color name matches. Test a small amount in an inconspicuous location if the match is uncertain, and allow it to dry before judging the result.

When to stop and call a professional
- The coating may contain lead and you cannot follow lead-safe work practices.
- Paint is peeling or chipping across a broad area rather than at one small spot.
- The wall is damp, soft, stained, or repeatedly damaged.
- You cannot identify the substrate or select compatible filler, primer, and paint.
- The repair is in a highly visible area where a uniform finish matters and spot touch-up remains noticeable.
