Record the full message and the boiler’s exact model and serial number, then use the matching Lochinvar manual to decide what happens next. Owners can make basic observations, but gas, electrical, combustion, sensor-measurement and internal-control diagnostics belong to a qualified service technician.
Start with the display and the exact boiler model
Before resetting the boiler or cycling its power, write down the complete fault message exactly as displayed. Also record the model and serial number from the boiler’s rating plate. Those details matter: Lochinvar lists separate manuals and parts sheets for the PB 502–2001 and PB 2500–5000 ranges, as well as archived documentation. Do not assume a fault table or part number for one Power-Fin range applies to another.

Find the manual for the exact model and consult its fault table and service procedure. If the model is unclear, the message differs from the wording in the manual, or the boiler has shut down repeatedly, contact a qualified heating professional rather than selecting a procedure from a generic online code list.
What you can observe safely
Owner observations can help a technician narrow down the problem without turning a fault message into a do-it-yourself repair. Note whether the system was calling for heat, whether the shutdown happened once or repeatedly, and whether the boiler’s visible vent termination appears blocked. Do not remove boiler panels, handle wiring, adjust gas components or dismantle venting to investigate.

#1 Best Overall
- Hot Surface Igniter, Lochinvar Boilers/Heaters.
- Record the fault message and when it appeared.
- Note whether the boiler tries to start, runs briefly, or does not start; do not repeatedly force it to restart.
- From a safe location, look for an obvious obstruction at an accessible outdoor air-intake or vent termination. Do not reach inside or take apart the piping.
- Tell the technician about recent changes to the heating system, pump operation or venting, if known.
Use the fault message to identify the subsystem
The service manual groups Power-Fin faults across gas pressure, ignition and flame detection, temperature limits, fan speed, venting, water flow, sensors and controls. The associations below are troubleshooting directions, not proof that a particular component has failed.
| Fault family | What the service manual associates with it | Appropriate next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fan speed low or high | A difference between commanded and actual fan speed. Listed service checks include vent or intake length, obstructions at pipes or terminations, wiring connections and the fan; one low-speed chart case also lists a fuse. | Record the exact message and report any visible termination blockage. Have a qualified technician check installation, wiring and fan components under the model-specific procedure. |
| Flame failure or flame out of sequence | Flame-signal or flame-detection conditions. The chart lists checks involving the flame rod and its wiring, grounding, gas supply pressure and feedback wiring. | Do not infer that the gas valve or flame rod is defective. Gas, ignition and electrical checks should be performed by a qualified technician. |
| High limit, outlet temperature or delta-T | Water fill and air purging, piping, pump operation or sizing, flow, sensors and settings. | Report the displayed message and any known heating-system or pump symptoms. A limit trip alone does not establish that the limit switch has failed. |
| High flue temperature | The flue-temperature parameter, heat-exchanger condition, flue-sensor wiring or resistance, and vent or intake installation or obstruction. | Arrange service diagnosis. Heat-exchanger inspection or cleaning and sensor measurements require the applicable service procedure and appropriate technician competence. |
| Sensor open or short | An inlet or outlet sensor circuit that is disconnected or shorted. The chart directs service checks of wiring and sensor resistance against the manual’s tables. | Have the technician identify the sensor and verify the circuit using the exact model’s documentation before considering a replacement. |
| Gas-pressure switch, louver-proving or external-control messages | The manual includes these fault classes, which concern gas-pressure switching, louver proving or an external control condition. | Use the full message and matching model-specific fault table to distinguish a system condition from a component fault. Do not bypass a switch or external control. |
| Control-board or internal-control messages | Some entries identify an internal control fault and specify reset or board-related actions for particular messages. | Follow only the action listed for the exact message and model. Do not replace a control board based on a generic code list. |
Why a temperature or flow fault may not mean a failed switch
High-limit, outlet-temperature and delta-T faults can involve the conditions that move heat through the system, not just the sensor or limit device. The service manual includes water fill and air purging, piping, pump operation or sizing, flow, sensor condition and settings among the relevant checks. That is why replacing a switch or sensor solely because a related fault appeared can miss the underlying problem.
Identifying the cause may require checking water-side operation and comparing sensor readings with model-specific service information. Those are technician diagnostics, not a reason to adjust system settings or open the boiler based on the display alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why fan, flame and flue faults need qualified diagnosis
Fan-speed messages can relate to vent or intake installation, a blockage, wiring, the fan or, in one low-speed chart case, a fuse. Flame-related messages have a different set of possible causes, including flame-rod condition or wiring, grounding, gas supply pressure and feedback wiring. A high flue-temperature message can call for checks of the heat exchanger, flue sensor and vent or intake.
These possibilities overlap in ways a message alone cannot resolve. Gas-pressure measurements, electrical checks, combustion troubleshooting and heat-exchanger service should be performed by a qualified technician using the correct manual. Do not adjust gas pressure, test live circuits, clean internal components or change combustion settings as a homeowner procedure.

Should you reset a Power-Fin boiler?
Reset behavior depends on the exact fault. The service manual describes some faults as requiring manual reset after the condition is corrected, others as releasing automatically, and some messages as internal-control faults with their own specified actions. The message-specific procedure in the manual—not a general reset rule—determines what applies.
Do not repeatedly reset the boiler to keep it running or use resets in place of diagnosis. If the condition returns, record the message and arrange service. A reset does not show that the underlying cause has been corrected.
How to match a replacement part
Use a parts sheet only after diagnosis points to a defective component. Locate the sheet for the boiler’s model range, then confirm the part against the full model and serial number. A flame rod or temperature sensor listed for one Power-Fin model should not be assumed to fit every model in the family.
