To make four splayed furniture legs sit flush, use a plywood hole jig and shims to carry the same flat reference from one leg to the next. WOOD Magazine describes making the jig from 1/4-inch plywood, then trimming each leg with a flexible flush-cut saw. The sequence matters: after trimming a leg, shim it before moving the jig to the next one.
What you need
- A flat reference surface, such as a table-saw top.
- 1/4-inch plywood for the jig and three small shims.
- A flexible flush-cut saw.
WOOD Magazine’s shop tip names no saw brand or model. Its illustration is part of the setup explanation, so consult the original diagram when positioning the jig: WOOD Magazine’s illustrated tip.
How to trim the legs
- Set the furniture on a flat surface, such as a table-saw top.
- Make a hole in a piece of 1/4-inch plywood that is larger than the leg. Cut three small shims from the same plywood stock.
- Place one leg through the hole in the plywood jig and trim its end with a flexible flush-cut saw.
- Move the jig to the next leg. Shim the leg you have just trimmed, then trim the next leg using the jig.
- Continue moving the jig and shimming the previously trimmed leg as you work through the remaining legs.
Why the shims are part of the sequence
The jig supplies a flat reference for trimming; the shims help carry that reference forward as the jig moves from leg to leg. Follow the same order each time: trim one leg, reposition the jig, shim the trimmed leg, and then cut the next.
What the method does—and does not—establish
WOOD Magazine published the tip on August 7, 2017, crediting it to Marvin Aberle of Beulah, North Dakota. The tip calls the technique “foolproof,” but that is the contributor’s description, not a measured accuracy or performance guarantee. The article reports no test results, time savings, or comparison with other approaches.
