It uses knockdown hardware for disassembly and moving, and shows stairs for access. Before building, check the room layout and review the plan’s safety details: the published page does not state a load rating for this design.
What the Wood Magazine plan includes
The plan is designed around a full-size mattress above a work area, with two shelves. Wood Magazine gives the overall footprint as 68¼ × 101½ inches. Its plan page was updated April 28, 2025. The publisher describes knockdown hardware intended to make the unit easier to disassemble and move.
The described construction includes plywood leg components, desk cleats, a desktop, and a stair assembly. The desktop edges are rounded over. In the desk-cleat construction, the instructions describe glue and pocket screws, but say not to glue the cleat assembly to the frame. Those details belong to this design; follow the complete drawings and instructions rather than transferring a joint detail to a modified build. Wood Magazine’s plan page
Will it fit your room?
Measure the usable floor area against the published 68¼ × 101½-inch footprint, then account for how the bed will be used. The stairs take more floor area than a ladder, and the plan says to construct a ladder if space does not allow the stairway shown. The published page identifies this alternative; check the full drawings and materials list to determine what is included and what you must provide.

#1 Best Overall
- Complete materials cutting list
- Part detail drawings
- Exploded view drawings
- Easy to follow step-by-step Instructions
- The materials to build it, are NOT included
- Check that the full footprint fits without blocking doors, windows, or normal routes through the room.
- Consider the clearance needed to approach and use the desk, shelves, stairs, or ladder.
- Check the ceiling and nearby fixtures, and leave room to climb safely.
- Plan the layout around the actual mattress size and its fit within the frame.
Do not assume this design can be safely resized for a different mattress. Ana White’s separate loft-bed plans use size-specific shopping and cut lists, but that does not validate converting the Wood Magazine plan. Ana White’s loft-bed plan listings
Plan for safe access and fall protection
Health Canada identifies falls as the most common cause of injuries associated with bunk beds and loft beds, especially falls from the top bunk or ladder. Its guidance recommends guardrails on all four sides, a secured ladder, and a snug-fitting mattress. It specifies that guardrail tops should be at least 12.7 centimetres (5 inches) above the mattress. These are Health Canada recommendations, not an engineering review of this woodworking plan or a substitute for applicable local requirements. Health Canada: Bunk bed and loft bed safety

- Continued Technical Support from The (WoodPatternExpert); 20 Years of Experience!
- Complete Materials List & Pattern Dimensions that use the least $ of bldg. material!
- Check that the completed design has guardrails on all four sides and the recommended clearance above the mattress.
- Make sure the mattress fits snugly rather than leaving gaps at the frame or guardrails.
- Secure the ladder and use it when climbing.
- Position the bed away from ceiling fans, windows, cords, and other furniture.
- Health Canada says loft beds are a space-saving option for children over age six; consider the child’s ability to use the access safely.
The plan page does not establish a structural load rating, certification, or compliance with every current standard or local rule. Do not infer a safe capacity from the footprint or construction descriptions; assess the complete plan and the finished build against applicable requirements.

Use the complete plan drawings, parts information, and instructions for the intended design. Its plywood leg components and desk cleat arrangement are not a basis for changing the frame, mattress size, or joints without reassessing the structure. Knockdown hardware is described as a way to disassemble and move the unit; it does not establish a load capacity.

- Comprehensive blueprint for building a multifunctional bunk bed
- Includes plans for a desk, chest, and storage organizer
- Ideal for maximizing space in bedrooms or dormitories
- Customizable design allows for personalization and creativity
- Detailed instructions suitable for woodworking enthusiasts of all skill levels
A separate Home Depot guide discusses both stationary and hinged desks and gives 28 inches from the floor as an example height for a standard-height stationary desktop. That is general reference information, not a dimension validated for the Wood Magazine design. The guide also discusses smoothing edges, sanding, and finishing. Home Depot: How to build a loft bed
For this project, a circular saw is a relevant tool category because the plan involves cutting plywood and the Home Depot guide includes one in its tool context. Choose tools and finishing methods suited to the materials and instructions; the cited material does not establish a specific tool model or tested build result.

What to verify before starting
- Review the full Wood Magazine plan, including drawings and materials list, and confirm the design’s full-size mattress specification.
- Measure the room and test the published footprint against the intended desk, storage, and access arrangement.
- Decide whether the stairway fits. If not, verify the plan details and materials required for its ladder alternative.
- Check the completed design against Health Canada’s guardrail, mattress-fit, ladder, and placement guidance, as well as applicable local requirements.
- Do not rely on an assumed weight capacity: the plan page does not publish a load rating.
