TV Guide lists the episode as Season 7, Episode 11, “Laurence Fishburne’s Foolproof Surprise,” broadcast June 16, 2024. Its summary describes Fishburne asking the Property Brothers to create a resort-level backyard retreat for a friend. TV Guide’s Season 7 episode guide identifies the episode and air date.
Realtor.com’s June 19, 2024 account identifies the recipient as Greg, Fishburne’s longtime friend and right-hand man, and says the Los Angeles renovation took four weeks. Realtor.com’s makeover coverage details the work and design choices.
What changed in Greg’s backyard?
A shaded cooking and dining area
Greg already had an outdoor dining setup, but the area received too much sun and lacked a place to cook and serve. The brothers installed a remote-controlled retractable awning that extends from the house over the new dining table and outdoor kitchen. Drew Scott said smaller umbrellas would not provide sufficient shade, while a pergola would feel awkward in the tight space.

A repaired and resurfaced patio
The original patio had drainage problems and multiple levels. The renovation replaced and repoured one section, then applied a waterproof epoxy resurfacing material to help the old and new concrete look cohesive. Jonathan Scott explained that concrete does not always need to be removed: in his account, hairline cracks or discoloration may be candidates for resurfacing, while some concrete in this project had to be ripped out.
A dead corner turned into a lounge
A triangular dirt patch at the back of the yard had been going unused. The team used composite decking to create a seating nook with a fire pit and carried the material onto the walls for a connected look and added privacy. Realtor.com reported that the wall feature added an additional foot of privacy; that measurement describes this project, not a general construction result.

Planters and a personal tile detail
Four planter boxes at different heights were built into the composite wall, bringing greenery into the lounge without taking up floor space. To reflect Greg’s interest in Spanish- and Moroccan-inspired tile, the team chose a floral Spanish-inspired pattern for a planter wall. Its decorative character offsets the contemporary dark decking.

What homeowners can take from the design
- Plan shade around the actual use area. The awning covered the kitchen and dining zone, addressing sun exposure where people would be cooking and sitting. An umbrella, pergola or retractable awning will suit different layouts; this episode shows why available space and coverage matter.
- Assess concrete before deciding to replace it. The project combined localized replacement with resurfacing. Whether either approach is suitable for another patio depends on its condition and the underlying drainage; the episode account is an example, not a construction assessment for every slab.
- Give overlooked corners a defined purpose. Rather than treating the yard as one open area, the makeover made a small back corner a destination for sitting around a fire pit.
- Repeat materials to visually link compact zones. Composite decking on both the seating area and wall helped the nook read as one space.
- Build in greenery and personal details. Wall-mounted planters preserved floor area, while a tile pattern tied the design to Greg’s preferences instead of leaving the space purely utilitarian.
