Frost and a hard freeze are not the same, and no cover can guarantee protection in prolonged or severe cold.
Frost or freeze: what is forecast?
Frost can form on plant surfaces even when the air is a little above 32°F. A freeze occurs when air and plant tissues fall below 32°F. The risk to a particular plant depends on its species, growth stage, how well it has acclimated to cold, and the conditions in your yard.
For tender plants, use an overnight forecast approaching the mid-30s°F as a prompt to assess conditions and prepare—not as a rule that every plant needs covering. Cold pockets, wind exposure, and the temperature at plant level can differ from a forecast for your area.
Which plants should you protect first?
Prioritize outdoor vegetables, annuals, tropical plants, and exposed plants in containers. Their foliage or roots may be especially vulnerable, and container roots have less insulation from surrounding soil than roots in the ground.

Many established perennials and woody plants tolerate light cold, and seasonal cold helps many plants enter dormancy. Do not cover every shrub or perennial automatically: the plant’s hardiness, dormancy, and the forecast severity and duration all matter.
What to do before a freeze
- Move pots to shelter. Bring vulnerable containers into a heated room or a protected porch or garage. If a pot must remain outside, group containers together and insulate the sides.
- Water the soil if it is dry. Moist soil can absorb heat during the day and release some of it at night. Avoid leaving soil saturated, which can harm roots.
- Mulch the root zone where appropriate. Mulch can moderate soil temperature and reduce heat loss around roots. The suitable amount depends on the plant and local conditions, so there is no single depth for every garden.
- Gather covers and supports. Sheets, blankets, towels, frost fabric, or row covers can help with frost and mild cold. Use stakes, hoops, or another support to hold the material above foliage where possible.
How to cover plants so the protection works
- Drape the cover over supports. Avoid pressing fabric onto foliage where feasible; leaves touching a cold cover may still be injured.
- Extend it to the ground. A cover works by trapping warmth from the soil around the plant. Secure the edges against wind.
- Remove or ventilate it after the cold passes. On sunny days, especially, a covered plant can overheat. Open the cover or take it off once temperatures are safe.
Garden frost cloth is a reusable option alongside household sheets or blankets. The setup matters more than the label: support it above foliage where possible, secure it to the ground, and remove or open it as temperatures rise. Row-cover supports or garden hoops can help keep fabric off plants. A cover is not a guarantee in a hard freeze; UF/IFAS notes that “Covers are better at protecting plants from frost than from extreme cold.”

Iowa State Extension gives about 28°F as a general point below which covering is typically no longer effective at preventing cold damage. Damage may also occur above that threshold if freezing conditions persist for five hours or longer. These are general guidelines, not guarantees for every plant, cover, or site.

Watering soil before cold weather can help it store and release heat, but this is different from running sprinklers overnight. Commercial freeze-protection sprinkling depends on continuous water application as it freezes. An ordinary home irrigation system may not provide enough water, and using it this way can worsen damage.

What to do after a freeze
- Wait before pruning. Cold injury may take days to become clear. Unless a damaged branch is an immediate hazard, wait for new growth or clearer evidence before cutting it back.
- Check whether stems are alive. Lightly scratch a small area of bark: green tissue beneath indicates living tissue, while brown or black tissue indicates injury.
- Reassess watering after the soil thaws. Check the plant and soil rather than assuming it needs water immediately after the freeze.
