Laurel Avenue is scheduled to close to traffic on October 19, 2026, as Washington Gas prepares to replace the gas main beneath the side of the street currently occupied by Takoma Park’s Streetery. The city expects the Streetery’s pavilions and furniture to move across the avenue between October 19 and November 2. Gas-main work is scheduled to begin November 2 and is projected to finish by the end of December.
What is happening on Laurel Avenue
Washington Gas plans to replace the gas-main system on Laurel Avenue. The City of Takoma Park says the street will close to traffic beginning October 19 so preparations can get underway. The utility work is expected to run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The gas main runs beneath the side of Laurel Avenue where the Streetery is currently set up. To make room for the utility project, the city expects the pavilions and furniture to move to the opposite side of the avenue between October 19 and November 2. The Streetery is expected to return to its permanent location after the gas work is finished. The city notice does not specify an exact date for that return.

The Streetery began as a public-space experiment in 2020, when a lane closure created room for outdoor dining and gathering during pandemic indoor-dining restrictions. Main Street Takoma’s planning document describes it as an established place to sit, eat, work, play and socialize, while also recording pedestrian-safety and traffic concerns raised during its first three years. Can customers still walk to businesses and the Post Office?
The City of Takoma Park says Washington Gas has assured it that barricades and protective measures will maintain safe pedestrian access to businesses and the Post Office on the block during construction. This is the city’s stated plan; it is not a guarantee of how conditions will perform once work is underway. The traffic closure is for vehicles, and the city has not announced a pedestrian closure.

The city project notice and a contemporaneous local report confirm the traffic closure and planned Streetery move, but neither quantifies possible sales losses or changes in customer traffic, nor includes named business owners describing expected effects.
