It can be an option for suitable light-colored towels and sheets, but it is not a special washer cycle or a necessary part of routine laundry. Check care labels first: the method uses hot water and can affect dyes and some fibers.
What laundry stripping is—and what a murky tub can tell you
Stripping means soaking laundry for several hours in a solution that commonly includes borax, washing soda (sodium carbonate), and powdered detergent. The soak is followed by rinsing and drying. Maytag describes the method as unnecessary when laundry is washed properly, while Consumer Reports likewise frames it as a soak intended to loosen buildup—not as proof that every item needs treatment.
Discolored or cloudy soak water can look dramatic, but it does not identify a particular contaminant or show that stripping is needed. The available guidance does not establish how much better the method cleans than ordinary laundering or a simpler detergent soak.
Which linens are suitable?
Consider the full recipe only for items whose care labels permit the required hot-water exposure. Maytag identifies light-colored, white, or colorfast towels and linens as possible candidates. Sort lights away from darks and colored items; dyes may run in hot water.

- Skip wool: Maytag Canada warns that stripping can remove lanolin, wool’s protective natural oil.
- Skip spandex-containing exercise clothes: Maytag Canada cautions that the solution can degrade spandex over time.
Maytag also warns that repeated stripping may leach natural oils from fabric and advises limiting it to a few times a year. These are manufacturer cautions, not quantified damage rates from controlled testing.
An example recipe and method
The following is Maytag’s US recipe, not a universal standard. Use it only if the textiles’ care labels allow very hot water, and follow the instructions on each product.

Maytag’s bathtub or large-bucket recipe
- 1/4 cup borax
- 1/4 cup washing soda
- 1/2 cup powdered laundry detergent
- Fill a bathtub or large bucket with very hot water that the items can safely tolerate.
- Add the powders and stir to dissolve them, then submerge the laundry.
- Soak overnight, stirring occasionally.
- Drain the solution, rinse the items thoroughly by hand, and dry them as usual.
Recipes differ by source. Arm & Hammer gives the same 1:1:2 ingredient ratio but directs users to soak for four to five hours, until the water cools; its directions call for its own powdered detergent and warn against powdered detergent containing bleach. Tide also describes a four-to-five-hour soak, but its retrieved guide names baking soda rather than washing soda. Do not combine these recipes or assume baking soda and washing soda are interchangeable.
Maytag Canada advises against doing the extended soak in a washing machine because the effect of the solution on the appliance is difficult to predict. Use a tub or suitable large vessel instead.

When ordinary washing or a simpler soak makes more sense
If you suspect residue, first measure detergent according to its label and your washer’s guidance. Maytag notes that excess detergent or softener can contribute to buildup, and says proper washing should make stripping unnecessary.
Maytag Canada suggests a simpler alternative: soak in hot water with traditional detergent, then rinse, provided the care label permits that temperature. It uses fewer added products than the full recipe. Neither that guidance nor the cited stripping instructions provide controlled, head-to-head cleaning measurements, so there is no evidence-based performance ranking among these options.
