How the box locks together
Make’s January 18, 2013 project article presents the box as a twist on a familiar finger-jointed box and attributes its assembly description to Michael Milazzo, an ITP student. In Milazzo’s words, as quoted by Make: “The pieces fit into each other like a puzzle, fitting tightly together to give you a solid, closed box. At the corners, one piece will slide over the other, locking it into place. The smallest piece must be placed second to last.” Read the Make project article.

The overlap at the corners is what makes the assembly mechanical rather than adhesive-dependent. Make describes the ability to take the box apart to reach its contents as a benefit of that glue-free design. The article does not report repeated-assembly testing or establish how well the joints hold up over time.

Acrylic sheet stock is the project’s central material, but Make does not identify the grade or thickness used. The cited material therefore cannot establish a specific sheet to buy or a proven cut specification for this box. Choose material compatible with your laser and design, and verify your machine’s requirements before cutting.

- Joint geometry and kerf or burn correction: The generator also includes finger-joint and burn-correction settings. PlexiSystem describes AcrylicBuilder Pro as supporting acrylic, finger joints, kerf compensation, and DXF export. These are tool features, not validated settings for the featured box. See PlexiSystem’s AcrylicBuilder Pro documentation.
Fit depends on the relationship between the cut geometry and the material and machine used. Neither source supplies the featured box’s joint tolerance, kerf value, laser settings, or a tested recipe, so those values should not be inferred from a generator’s editable fields.

What the published project does—and does not—establish
The project description supports the concept and assembly sequence: interlocking acrylic pieces form a closed box, and the smallest piece is installed second to last. It does not provide a measured strength rating, durability results, exact dimensions, cut time, sheet specification, or machine settings. Treat the box as a described design, not as a tested performance specification.
