He also cited about 600,000 cars crossing Kyiv bridges between the left and right banks each day. That is the minister’s reported estimate; the reports do not provide an independent traffic count or methodology.
Is Kyiv planning a tunnel under the Dnipro?
A tunnel was mentioned as a possible long-term alternative, alongside quickly assembled concrete structures. Kalashnyk said major projects of this kind could cost tens of billions of hryvnias and would need support from partners. No tunnel approval, financing decision, route, design, procurement or schedule was reported. It is therefore an option under consideration, not a committed project.

Why are backup routes being discussed?
Kalashnyk said the priority remains protecting and preserving existing bridges, with prevention of attacks, protection, rapid recovery and alternative crossings forming parts of the response. Separately, Ukrinform reported that an attack on Kyiv’s Pivnichnyi (North) Bridge on the morning of 3 October damaged the road surface and trolleybus contact network, and that Pivdennyi (South) Bridge had recently been closed to traffic after attacks. Those are reported incident details, distinct from the minister’s forward-looking project statements.
