The house combines an old-fashioned, historic feel with spaces for cooking, reading, working, sleepovers, gardening and indoor-outdoor gatherings—exactly the balance Garner says she wanted.
A home designed from a feeling, not a picture board
Garner says she did not give designers Steve and Brooke Giannetti a Pinterest board or a stack of magazine photographs. Instead, she described a home that should feel “old and cool and historic” while still working for “a big family with a lot of things going on.” Steve Giannetti responded with a watercolor rendering of the concept, which became the starting point for the collaboration.

That process helps explain the finished house: its farmhouse character is paired with rooms planned for real daily activity rather than formal display. The tour presents the home as a warm, practical Los Angeles retreat, not as a museum of period details.

The living room makes indoor-outdoor family life central
Garner calls the living room the biggest room in the house. Its defining feature is not a single decorative object but the connection to the outdoors: she can open the doors wide in summer, extending the room toward the garden and yard.

A wood kitchen with a dedicated baking station
Garner says she loves a wood kitchen and points out a separate baking area. The tour also identifies an orchard in the backyard, reinforcing the relationship between food preparation and growing food at home.

Like the living room, the library opens toward the garden. Its role is deliberately flexible: family members can read, watch television or settle into the room together without separating the house from the landscape.
A garden that is both productive and informal
Garner mentions growing thyme, kale, tomatoes and green beans. She also describes choosing natural flowers in part because pests do not like them. ABC News’ 2024 report likewise highlighted the edible garden.

The bedroom is compact; the bathroom is deliberately larger
Garner says she wanted a compact bedroom and a bigger bathroom where people could get ready comfortably. It is another instance of allocating space according to use: the private sleeping room stays efficient while the shared preparation area receives more generous treatment.
What Garner says the finished home means to her
Near the end of the Architectural Digest tour, Garner says, “I’ve never built anything all by myself before. And I’m so proud of it.” She closes with a second sentiment: “I’m filled with gratitude, every time I walk into my house. That I get to live here. That I’m so lucky to have my kids here.”
ABC News’ 2024 summary reports the same central feeling of pride and gratitude. Those remarks frame the tour as a look at a home built for shared life, rather than a display of status or a catalog of products.
