A minimalist home is not an empty room or a compulsory neutral color scheme. It is a home arranged around real routines: fewer unnecessary belongings, clear places for what remains, and enough open space to move comfortably. Start by observing what each room needs to help you do, then edit possessions before buying storage or furniture.

How should you start organizing your home like a minimalist?

Begin with use rather than appearance. In one or two sentences, describe what happens in the room, what regularly gets in the way, and which items are genuinely needed there. This keeps decisions practical and follows IKEA Indonesia’s function-first guidance on routines, movement, storage, color and light.

1. Start with the room’s daily job

Write down the room’s main activities. A kitchen may need food preparation and quick cleanup; an entryway may need a place to remove shoes, hang coats and find keys. Items that support those activities can stay nearby. Objects that belong to another routine should move elsewhere.

2. Choose one manageable starting area

Do not begin with “the whole house.” Select one drawer, a single shelf, one section of a closet or one surface. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) recommends room-by-room progress, and a small completed area gives you a workable system to copy.

How do you decide what stays?

3. Sort before organizing

Take everything out of the chosen area and group similar items. Decide what to keep, discard, donate or sell before selecting containers. Organizers can hide excess; sorting reveals how much you actually own.

Use four clearly marked boxes or bags so each decision is visible. Check local rules for recycling, hazardous disposal and textile donation rather than putting every unwanted item in general waste.

4. Choose a decision rule that suits you

There is no single correct decluttering method. ACI’s room-by-room, four-box approach works by location and disposition. The KonMari method works by category, beginning with clothes and ending with sentimental items, and asks you to keep what “speaks to the heart.” Choose the unit of work you can finish without repeatedly reopening the same decisions.

KonMari-style tidying Category across the home Keep items that meet a keep-focused, “sparks joy” criterion People ready to make category-wide decisions

5. Give every retained item a home

Assign a specific resting place to each item that remains. KonMari’s official storage guidance puts the purpose plainly: “The aim of storage is to give every item a home – a designated spot for it to rest and recharge when not in use.” Place that home where the item is used and make returning it easier than leaving it out.

Where should everyday clutter go?

6. Create an entryway drop zone

Observe where keys, bags, shoes and mail naturally land. If space and household needs allow, put a tray, hook or basket at that point. Homes & Gardens recommended functional drop zones in high-traffic areas on April 3, 2025. Keep the station limited to daily-use items; otherwise it becomes another storage pile.

7. Clear the busiest surface first

Choose the counter, tabletop, bedside table, television unit or floor patch that collects odds and ends. Return each item to its assigned home and leave only things used on that surface. A clear landing area makes the next reset faster without requiring a whole-room makeover.

8. Use closed storage selectively

Drawers, cupboards and lidded boxes can reduce visual noise from small items while keeping them accessible. Open shelves are useful for objects you use often or want to see. AARP’s Smart Guide: Declutter Your Home, updated January 10, 2025, distinguishes these trade-offs; do not hide items you will forget or need to reach constantly.

How can you add storage without making rooms feel cramped?

9. Use vertical or hidden space only when practical

A wall shelf, tall cabinet or under-bed container can help when floor area is limited, but check reach, access and circulation first. Keep frequently used items within comfortable reach and avoid shelves that force you to move furniture or stretch unsafely. IKEA’s guidance emphasizes preserving room to move and choosing pieces that do more than one job.

10. Choose furniture for a real routine

A storage bench may provide seating and a place for shoes; an ottoman might hold blankets while serving as a footrest. Measure the room, doorway, walkway and furniture footprint before purchasing. Multifunctional furniture is useful only when both functions are used and access remains straightforward.

Measure before buying containers

Measure the storage opening, shelf depth and the belongings to be stored. ACI advises measuring before purchasing and reusing suitable household items where possible. A shoebox, existing jar or spare basket is preferable to a new organizer that does not fit.

How do color and lighting support a minimalist room?

11. Make lighting and color serve the room

Check daylight, curtain placement and dim corners before buying lamps or repainting. Adjustable elements—curtains, bulbs, lamps, rugs and accessories—can change how a room feels without renovation. Use colors that help the room’s purpose rather than assuming minimalism requires white walls or beige furnishings.

How do you keep a space clutter-free moving forward?

12. Build a brief reset and donation habit

Choose a short, repeatable reset: return items to their homes after dinner, sweep the entryway each evening or clear one surface before bed. Keep an outbox or donation station only if your household can empty it regularly. ACI recommends scheduled reviews and a one-in, one-out rule; Homes & Gardens also describes surface sweeps and donation stations. Treat these as practical systems, not guarantees of improved mental health.

Review the system when items repeatedly fail to return. The problem may be the item’s location, an overfilled container or an unrealistic routine—not a lack of discipline.

A simple implementation sequence

  1. Observe one room’s daily job and name its recurring obstacle.
  2. Select one drawer, shelf, closet section or surface.
  3. Remove everything and group like items.
  4. Choose what to keep, discard, donate or sell using one decision method.
  5. Measure the storage area and retained belongings.
  6. Assign each retained item a convenient home.
  7. Adjust layout, lighting or furniture only to solve a documented problem.
  8. Set a short reset and a realistic review schedule.

Optional structured guide

Readers who prefer a room-by-room framework may find The Minimalist Home by Joshua Becker useful. Penguin Random House describes it as a physical guide covering rooms including the kitchen, garage and bathroom. It is optional; the method above does not require buying a book or organizers.
