For standard U.S. mattresses, sizes range from Twin (38 × 75 inches) to King (76 × 80 inches); a California King is narrower but 4 inches longer than a King. Use the chart below to compare nominal mattress dimensions, then measure the frame, room and delivery route before ordering.
Standard U.S. mattress sizes and dimensions
These are nominal mattress dimensions. Nest Bedding lists the measurements below in its mattress-size guide; Sleep Foundation gives the same six categories and notes that the right choice depends on room size, budget and who shares the bed.

How to choose between the common sizes
Twin or Twin XL
Both are about 38 inches wide. Twin XL adds 5 inches of length, making it a practical choice for a taller single sleeper. Two Twin XL mattresses placed together create a 76 × 80-inch King footprint when used as a Split King.

Full or Queen
Full and Double are names for the same nominal size: 54 × 75 inches. A Queen adds 6 inches of width and 5 inches of length, at 60 × 80 inches. A Full can be easier to fit in a guest room, while a Queen offers more space for a couple.
King or California King
A standard King is 4 inches wider than a California King; a California King is 4 inches longer. Choose based on the room’s shape, the clearance around the bed and the sleepers’ height—not just the size name.

Measure the whole installation, not just the mattress
The mattress does not include the bed frame, headboard or the space needed to move around it. Before purchase, check the mattress footprint, frame interior, frame exterior, foundation or box spring, and available walking space. Rowley’s bed-measuring reference recommends measuring the bed’s width and length as well as bed, mattress and box-spring height.
- Measure the bedroom and the planned bed location, including clearance for doors, drawers, closets and walkways.
- Check the frame’s interior dimensions against the mattress and its outside dimensions against the room.
- Measure doorways, stairs, elevators and tight turns along the delivery route.
- Account for bedside tables and enough access to make the bed.
- Use the mattress maker’s exact dimensions for fitted sheets and close-fitting frames; thickness and finished width or length can vary.
A simple fit check is to mark the intended mattress footprint on the floor with painter’s tape. Confirm that furniture and room access still work before arranging delivery.

Specialty, split and regional sizes
Full XL and Olympic Queen
A Full XL is about 54 × 80 inches: Full width with extra length. An Olympic Queen is about 66 × 80 inches, wider than a standard Queen, but is less consistently stocked.
Split King
A Split King uses two Twin XL mattresses side by side, together matching the nominal 76 × 80-inch footprint of a standard King. For an adjustable bed, verify that the base, frame and bedding are intended for split use; a one-piece King mattress and a Split King setup are not interchangeable in every accessory configuration.

RV and Canadian labels
RV and Canadian mattress sizes may differ from U.S. household dimensions. Do not assume that a label such as “Queen RV” means 60 × 80 inches; use the seller’s measured specifications and confirm compatible frame and bedding sizes.

Target’s retailer chart rounds Twin and Twin XL widths to 39 inches, while Nest Bedding and Sleep Foundation list 38 inches. This reflects a rounding or finished-dimension convention across charts and products. If a mattress must fit a tight frame, rely on the exact model specification rather than a rounded category chart.
