A two-story home in Kurihara, Japan, shows how construction-scale 3D printing can create cave-like curves and arches while working alongside conventional reinforced-concrete engineering. Its supplier says the project met Japan’s seismic requirements and received government approval; that is a claim about this specific house, not proof that 3D-printed concrete homes generally are earthquake-proof.
What is the O House?
The private residence is in Kurihara City, Miyagi Prefecture. ONOCOM calls it Stealth House, while its project name is “O-house in Tsukidate.” The compact home has about 50 m² of floor area across two levels. COBOD International reports 31 m² on the ground floor and 19 m² upstairs, with 39 m³ of printed material used for the project.
The design takes cues from caves: curved walls and arches shape the interior, while skylights bring in daylight and conventional windows are sparse. New Atlas describes the bedroom and ensuite bathroom downstairs, with the living and kitchen area upstairs. ONOCOM says the construction scope also included printed floor and roof slabs and interior elements.
What was printed—and what was conventionally built?
The house was not simply printed as a complete, self-supporting structure. It uses a hybrid system: 3D printing formed much of the distinctive geometry, while a conventional reinforced-concrete frame provides the primary load-bearing structure, according to New Atlas. The printed walls sit within that frame. New Atlas also describes a reinforced strip foundation supported by ground-improvement piles.

This distinction is central to understanding the project’s seismic claim. The architectural freedom of printed components and the structural role of the reinforced-concrete frame are parts of one engineered system; the project does not show that printed walls alone can replace conventional structural design.
How the construction was carried out
COBOD reports that a four-person crew operated a custom printer configuration. Printing extended from about 0.5 m below ground to a height of 7 m, with components produced both on site and off site. These are project-specific figures, not standard crew or equipment requirements for other homes.

The work also involved different weather conditions. COBOD says some components for winter use were printed below 10°C with heated mixing water. The main house was printed in summer conditions of about 30–35°C, when higher temperatures shortened the material’s bucket life and required process control. Those details describe this project’s methods, not a guarantee of performance in all climates.
What does the seismic approval establish?
COBOD says the house was completed in November 2025, met Japan’s seismic design requirements, and was the country’s first government-approved two-story 3D-printed reinforced-concrete house. TCT Magazine also reports the compliance claim. Because the available public project material does not reproduce an approval certificate, engineering calculations, test protocol, or regulator’s explanation, the approval’s technical basis cannot be independently assessed from those reports alone.

The careful conclusion is limited but significant: according to its technology supplier, this particular hybrid house was approved under Japan’s requirements. That does not establish how it would perform in a real earthquake, nor does it certify 3D-printed concrete homes as a category. Japan’s earthquake-resistant building framework applies to the complete building system, not merely the fact that some components were printed.

COBOD founder and general manager Henrik Lund-Nielsen described the project as evidence, in the supplier’s view, that construction printing can meet demanding structural and regulatory requirements. Kizuki CEO Rika Igarashi said the company plans to explore applications in civil structures, disaster-prevention and defense infrastructure, and post-disaster reconstruction, as well as training and digital construction management. Those are stated company plans, not confirmed launches.
