James Bond Movie Homes: Real Locations, Sets and Fictional Residences

Bond’s on-screen homes can be fictional residences, real properties or purpose-built sets. Skyfall Lodge was built in Surrey, while Piz Gloria is a real restaurant used as a fictional clinic.

Some places described as Bond homes are real properties; others are sets built to look like homes, and still others are real hotels, restaurants or estates playing a different role. The distinction is especially clear in Skyfall: Bond’s ancestral home is set in Scotland, but Skyfall Lodge was built as a film set at Hankley Common in Surrey. This guide looks at notable examples without claiming to list every residence across the series.

What counts as a home in a Bond film?

“Home” can mean a character’s residence or lair in the story, the real property used as a filming location, or a purpose-built set representing a residence. Those categories are not interchangeable. A country house appearing in a film is not necessarily presented as someone’s home, and a real building can portray a fictional institution instead.

The Bond location indexes cover many kinds of places, including hotels, restaurants, estates and other settings. They are useful for finding filming locations, but are not a complete, home-specific production archive. The examples below therefore identify what the cited sources establish rather than treating every listed property as a residence.

Notable Bond homes and home-like locations

Film and year On-screen role Real-world location or construction What is established
Skyfall (2012) Skyfall Lodge, Bond’s fictional ancestral home in Scotland Hankley Common, Surrey, England Department M’s location reference says the lodge was built from scratch on Ministry of Defence land. VisitScotland also identifies England as the filming location for the estate.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969) Piz Gloria, used in the story as Blofeld’s allergy clinic A real revolving restaurant in Switzerland The location guide identifies the restaurant as the filming location. It is not a private residence.
Thunderball (1965) Chalfont Park House is listed among the film’s locations Chalfont Park House The cited location page links it to the film but does not establish that it represents a home.
No Time to Die (2021) An estate location stands in for mainland Norway Ardverikie Estate, Loch Laggan, Scotland VisitScotland identifies the estate as a filming location; the source does not describe it as a Bond home.

Skyfall Lodge: a Scottish home built in England

In Skyfall, the lodge is the Bond family’s ancestral home, and the story places it in the Scottish Highlands. The filming location was not an existing Scottish residence: Department M says the production built the lodge from scratch on Ministry of Defence land at Hankley Common in Surrey. VisitScotland likewise notes that the estate scenes were filmed in England. The fictional setting and the production site are different places.

The construction distinction matters: Skyfall Lodge was a purpose-built film set, not a surviving family property that can be visited as Bond’s home. The set-construction detail comes from a fan location reference, while VisitScotland provides tourism-board context for the England-versus-Scotland distinction.

Real buildings can play other roles

Piz Gloria is a restaurant, not a residence

In On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, the real revolving restaurant Piz Gloria in Switzerland appears as Blofeld’s allergy clinic. It is a useful example of how a real building can become a memorable Bond setting without being a home in the story.

Listed properties need scene-level context

Chalfont Park House appears in the location guide’s Thunderball entries, but that listing alone does not prove the building represents a residence. Heatherden Hall, an Edwardian country house at Pinewood Studios, also appears in a location index. Without a verified film, scene and narrative role, neither should be presented here as a specific Bond home.

Likewise, Ardverikie Estate is an estate filming location for No Time to Die, where it stands in for mainland Norway. That establishes a production location, not a residence belonging to Bond or another character.

How to read Bond location lists

Location guides can help identify where scenes were filmed, but a location entry does not by itself tell you whether a building was a home on screen, what it portrayed, whether it survives, or whether visitors can enter. For a careful comparison, check these distinctions:

  • Story role: Is the place a residence, lair, hotel, clinic, restaurant, estate or simply a scene setting?
  • Screen setting versus filming place: Does the film locate the building in one country while production filmed elsewhere?
  • Building versus set: Was an existing property filmed, or was a structure constructed for the production?
  • Evidence and access: Does the source verify the specific scene and role? Current ownership, public access and visiting arrangements require separate confirmation.

The official 007 site’s 2023 article said the franchise’s 25 films had featured more than a hundred locations by that point. That figure counts locations, not homes, so it cannot be used to estimate how many Bond residences exist.

Guides for exploring Bond filming locations

On the Tracks of 007 is a physical location guide covering films from Dr. No (1962) through Quantum of Solace (2008). Its publisher describes it as a 288-page guide with 665 photographs. It is useful for location context, but it does not cover the full film series and is not a home-only catalogue.

The official 007 site also describes James Bond Destinations, written by Daniel Pembrey and published by Assouline, as a hardback focused on Bond locations and production photography. The site quoted producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli: “These destinations are not just backgrounds, or even backgrounds that simply inform characters. In our movies, they are characters.”

BondMovies.com’s film-by-film location index distinguishes official Eon-series films from unofficial entries. That distinction matters if compiling a series-wide list: the 1967 Casino Royale and Never Say Never Again should not be silently mixed into an account of the official series. VisitScotland also explicitly notes that the 1967 Casino Royale is not an official Bond film.
