What to check before hiring
A company’s service list and published scale can help you decide whether to request an estimate, but they do not establish how a particular project will be scoped, scheduled or managed. Ask the same questions of each contractor you are considering so you can compare answers on equal terms.
Scope, allowances and changes
Request a written estimate that identifies the work included, materials or finish allowances, exclusions, and any assumptions about the existing structure. Ask how the company documents and prices changes after work begins, and whether a change must be approved in writing before it is carried out.

Schedule, crew and communication
Ask who will be your day-to-day contact, who supervises the crew, what the expected start and completion windows are, and how schedule changes or site issues will be communicated. For design-led work, clarify what design assistance is included. Ivy Lea says it has an in-house design team for certain interior and exterior projects and emphasizes regular client communication; ask how those arrangements apply to your project. These are company representations, not independent assessments of performance. The company homepage describes its estimate, design and communication approach.
Licensing, insurance and comparable work
Ask for current licensing information applicable to your project and municipality, along with insurance documentation. You can also request references or examples of completed work similar in type and scale to yours. Confirm that any reference is for work relevant to your project rather than relying only on broad company experience claims.
