Amazon Smart Plug

Is Your Amazon Smart Plug Compatible With HomeKit?

Older Amazon Smart Plugs are generally Alexa-only, while the newer Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Matter Compatible, can work directly with Apple Home through Matter.

It depends on the model. The older Amazon Smart Plug is generally an Alexa-only device and should not be assumed to work directly with Apple Home (formerly commonly called HomeKit). The newer Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Matter Compatible can be added to Apple Home through Matter.

Check the product name, model number, Matter logo, and setup code before trying to pair it.

The short answer

What your plug says Apple Home result
“Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Matter Compatible” Compatible with Apple Home through Matter, provided the exact device and setup process match the manufacturer’s documentation.
“Amazon Smart Plug” and only “Works with Alexa” Do not assume direct Apple Home or HomeKit support.
Matter logo plus a QR code or numeric setup code It is designed for Matter pairing; verify the model before setup.

Amazon branding alone does not determine compatibility. “Works with Alexa” confirms Alexa support, not Apple Home support. Likewise, being a Wi-Fi smart plug does not automatically make a plug compatible with Apple Home.

Apple supports Matter accessories in Apple Home on iOS 16.1 and later. Matter accessories can be controlled in the Home app, with Siri, and through Apple Home features such as Control Center. Apple’s Matter documentation explains the platform support.

HomeKit, Apple Home, and Matter: what the labels mean

HomeKit is the older term many buyers still use when searching for Apple’s smart-home platform. Apple Home is the consumer-facing app and ecosystem name. A Matter accessory can appear in Apple Home even when it is not marketed as a traditional HomeKit accessory.

Matter is a cross-platform smart-home standard. A Matter-certified plug may be commissioned into compatible Apple, Amazon, or Google ecosystems, but Matter does not guarantee that every platform exposes precisely the same features. Basic on/off control may be available everywhere while energy reporting, automations, setup options, or other capabilities differ.

Which Amazon plug do you have?

Do not treat every Amazon-branded plug as the same product. The Connectivity Standards Alliance lists the Amazon Basics Smart Indoor Plug as a Matter-certified product that works with Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, and Google Home through Matter. Its certification record identifies Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transport, hardware version V2.0, firmware version 202503271, and Matter specification version 1.1. See the CSA certification record.

Identify your device using this checklist:

  • Read the exact product name on the box, receipt, or original listing.
  • Find the model number on the plug, label, or packaging.
  • Look for the words “Matter Compatible”.
  • Look for the Matter logo.
  • Check whether the box includes a Matter QR code or numeric setup code.
  • Note whether the plug was designed to be configured only through the Alexa app.

If the plug only carries a “Works with Alexa” badge and has no Matter or Apple Home indication, treat it as incompatible with direct Apple Home pairing unless Amazon’s documentation for that exact model says otherwise.

How to add the Matter-compatible plug to Apple Home

  1. Plug the device into an outlet.
  2. If it has already been configured, place it into pairing or factory-reset mode using the instructions for that exact model.
  3. Open the Home app on an iPhone or iPad.
  4. Select Add Accessory.
  5. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the numeric setup code.
  6. Follow the prompts to assign the plug to a home and room.
  7. Give it a clear name, such as Desk Lamp or Workshop Fan.
  8. Test the switch in Apple Home and with Siri.

Do not apply reset instructions from a different Amazon plug. Button-hold times and reset behavior are model-specific. Use the relevant Amazon Basics Matter plug quick-start guide for that device.

Rank #2
Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Works with Alexa Only, Voice Control, Remote APP Control, Schedule, Compact Design, Versatile, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, No Hub Required, 4-Pack, White
  • SIMPLE TO SET UP WITH ALEXA: Get started in minutes with multiple setup options, including a zero touch experience when you select "Link device to your Alexa account" at checkout
  • CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE: Schedule plugged-in appliances like lights or fans to turn on/off automatically, or control them remotely via the Alexa app when you’re away
  • COMPACT DESIGN: The plug fits perfectly into 1 socket, leaving remaining sockets and outlets free for use; ideal for multiple appliances like holiday lighting, heaters, fans, lamps, water kettles, coffee makers, and more
  • CUSTOMIZE ROUTINES: Schedule your smart plug to turn on/off either at designated times, with a voice command, or even at sunrise and sunset
  • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps

A compatible Apple device and a functioning home network are needed for pairing and local control. Remote access and some automation features may depend on your Apple Home configuration and whether the Home app requests an appropriate home hub. Follow the current prompts in the Home app rather than assuming that a HomePod or Apple TV is universally required.

What if you have the older Amazon Smart Plug?

An older Alexa-focused Amazon Smart Plug cannot be assumed to support Apple Home or Matter through a software update. The existence of a newer Matter-certified Amazon Basics model does not prove that older hardware received a Matter update.

A firmware update can add compatibility only when Amazon has released one for that exact model. Check the device’s Amazon support page and current documentation before attempting an update or reset. If those materials do not identify Matter or Apple Home support, the reliable conclusion is that the plug does not offer direct Apple Home compatibility.

Can a bridge make an older plug appear in Apple Home?

Possibly, but a bridge is a workaround—not native HomeKit or Matter support.

Home Assistant

Home Assistant can combine devices and services from multiple ecosystems. Its HomeKit Bridge integration can expose supported devices in Home Assistant to Apple Home. The relevant distinction is important: Home Assistant must first integrate the particular Amazon plug, and then HomeKit Bridge can expose it. The bridge does not automatically make every Alexa accessory compatible.

  • Amazon Smart Plug works with the Alexa app and compatible Alexa devices to add voice control to any electrical outlet.
  • Simple setup - No smart home hub required. Just plug it in, open the Alexa app and follow the stress-free directions to get started in minutes.

  • Make any outlet a smart outlet. Compact design keeps your second outlet free for an additional smart plug.

Whether an old Amazon Smart Plug can be integrated depends on a currently supported Alexa, cloud, local, or third-party route. Cloud authentication and integrations can change. Home Assistant also states that adding its Matter integration does not transform an existing non-Matter device into a Matter accessory; see its Matter documentation and Apple Home and ecosystem FAQ.

Homebridge

Homebridge is another community platform that can expose supported devices to Apple Home through plugins. It may require an always-on Mac, Raspberry Pi, NAS, Docker host, or other server. Plugin availability and reliability can change, and cloud-based plugins may stop working when Amazon changes authentication or APIs. Homebridge’s own documentation also notes that its Matter implementation is not certified by the Connectivity Standards Alliance.

Choose a bridge only if you are comfortable maintaining software, network access, updates, and backups. For a simple, dependable Apple Home installation, direct Matter pairing is the more supportable option.

Troubleshooting

The plug does not appear in Apple Home

  1. Confirm the exact model name and model number.
  2. Check for the Matter logo and the correct setup code.
  3. Confirm the plug is in pairing mode.
  4. If it was previously commissioned to another Matter fabric, follow the model’s instructions to share or reset it.
  5. Check that the phone and plug can communicate over the local network.
  6. Reset the plug only according to its own quick-start guide, then retry in the Home app.

If the packaging does not mention Matter or Apple Home, stop treating repeated pairing attempts as a software problem. The likely issue is model incompatibility.

The plug works in Alexa but not Apple Home

That is normal for an Alexa-only plug. Alexa compatibility and Apple Home compatibility are separate capabilities. Alexa support does not establish Matter support.

The plug appears, but Siri cannot control it

  • Confirm it was added to the intended Apple Home.
  • Give it a distinctive name and assign it to the correct room.
  • Check that you are signed in to the intended Apple Account.
  • Verify that Siri is enabled on the controlling device.
  • Use the accessory and room names exactly as configured.

Siri trouble does not necessarily prove that the plug is incompatible; it may be an Apple Home configuration issue.

The device works in Home Assistant but not Apple Home

Confirm that the device is working in Home Assistant first, that HomeKit Bridge is enabled, that the plug type is exposed by the bridge, and that the bridge pairing process has been completed in Apple Home. The Home Assistant host must remain online, and the network must permit local discovery.

Keep the plug or replace it?

Your priority Best choice
You only need Alexa and the plug is reliable Keep the existing plug.
You want direct Apple Home, Siri, and Apple Home automations Use the explicitly Matter-compatible model or replace the plug with a certified Matter device.
You already run Home Assistant and accept maintenance Investigate whether the exact plug has a supported integration, then use HomeKit Bridge if it does.
You want minimal failure points and manufacturer-supported setup Replace an Alexa-only plug with a Matter-certified model.

When choosing a replacement, check for:

  1. Explicit Matter certification or manufacturer confirmation.
  2. Explicit Apple Home compatibility.
  3. The correct electrical rating and plug format for your country.
  4. 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi requirements, if it is a Wi-Fi Matter plug.
  5. Energy monitoring, if you need it; a basic on/off plug may not provide it.
  6. Physical size and whether it blocks an adjacent outlet.
  7. Local operation and behavior after a power outage.
  8. Any required proprietary account or cloud service.
  9. Multi-platform pairing if you also use Alexa or Google Home.
  10. The manufacturer’s firmware-update and support policy.

Do not rely on a generic Amazon retail listing. Confirm that the listing specifically says Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Matter Compatible; an older “Amazon Smart Plug” listing may describe a different device.

Conclusion

The answer is model-specific. The older Alexa-focused Amazon Smart Plug generally cannot be added directly to Apple Home. The newer Amazon Basics Smart Plug, Matter Compatible, is listed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance as working with Apple Home through Matter. Check the label and setup code first; if the plug lacks Matter or Apple Home support, either keep it for Alexa, use a supported bridge, or replace it with a certified Matter plug.
