Yes—an adjustable Allen key prototype has been demonstrated, but the reported version covers only 4–6 mm, and Hackaday’s August 2025 report does not confirm that a finished tool is available to buy. For dependable coverage across fastener sizes, a conventional metric hex-key set is the practical choice.
How the adjustable Allen key works
Hackaday reported in August 2025 that Chronova Engineering had built an adjustable Allen key prototype. Its working end starts with a hexagonal rod split into two prongs. A chisel-shaped rod acts as a wedge between them, spreading the prongs so they engage the sides of a hex socket. The idea is to make one tool fit more than one internal-hex size.
The report gives the demonstrated range as 4–6 mm. The maker reportedly thought the mechanism might be extended, but the article documents no wider range. It also provides no controlled torque, durability, or comparative performance results, so the demonstration should not be treated as proof that the tool matches a fixed-size key under demanding use. How the design evolved
The reported development involved several mechanical approaches rather than a single finished design. PC Gamer says six-prong and three-prong concepts were explored before the two-prong version: the six-prong design had torsional flex, while the three-prong version was limited by flex in its spring mechanism. Hackaday reports that an early metal design failed, after which the maker used 3D printing to make six further iterations. The prongs, wedge geometry, and heat treatment were adjusted during development. That iteration history helps explain how the prototype reached its reported two-prong arrangement; it does not establish long-term durability in regular use.
Can you buy one?
Hackaday reported that the design was not being patented and that drawings were available through Chronova Engineering’s Patreon for people interested in reverse-engineering or reproducing it. The report does not confirm a finished commercial tool for sale. Drawings or access to design files are not the same as a retail product, and availability through Patreon may change.

The potential advantage of an adjustable design is carrying fewer tools. For construction, maintenance, or other work where the correct fit matters across different fasteners, the prototype’s reported 4–6 mm span is a substantial constraint. Choose a conventional metric set when you need broader coverage; consider the prototype an interesting mechanism, not a replacement for a complete set.

Hackaday framed the prototype as an adjustable Allen key arriving “after all these years” and stated that the Allen key turned 115 in 2025. That is the article’s historical framing, not an independently established invention date or proof that this is the first adjustable design. The same report’s comment discussion mentions an earlier Telehex bicycle tool, but does not provide enough information to settle the question of priority.
