With the saw disconnected from power, lock the gauge at zero, align its fence or head with the blade using a reliable square, secure the adjustment, and check the alignment again. Set the pointer to zero only after the mechanical alignment is correct.
Before you adjust the gauge
- Check the saw first. Set the blade to 90° to the table using the saw maker’s procedure. A gauge aligned to a blade that is tilted will not produce a square crosscut.
- Disconnect power. Unplug the table saw before calibration; this is also the safety instruction in the INCRA MG2000 manual.
- Find the model-specific instructions. Gauge designs use different adjustment points and reference surfaces, so follow the manual for your saw and gauge.
- Use a reliable square. Keep it clear of the blade teeth; tooth contact can affect the check, as noted in the Grizzly G0970 manual and Axminster table saw manual.
How to set a table-saw miter gauge to zero
- Set the blade and gauge. With power disconnected, position the blade at 90° to the table as directed in the saw manual. Raise it as the manual specifies, then lock the miter gauge at its 0° position.
- Check the actual alignment. Place one edge of the square against the blade body and the other against the gauge fence or head. Do not rest the square on the teeth. The gauge is square when the reference surfaces sit flush without a gap.
- Adjust the gauge using its designated mechanism. If there is a gap, use the adjustment described in the gauge manual. For example, the Grizzly G0994 manual describes pivoting the miter head until it sits flush against a square referenced to the miter bar. The INCRA MG2000 uses a calibration cam to set its fence square to the saw blade. These are model-specific methods, not interchangeable instructions.
- Secure and recheck. Hold the alignment as you tighten the lock or fasteners, then check it again. Tightening can move the setting; Grizzly specifically warns that the G0994 lock knob may affect the adjustment.
- Set the pointer last. Once the fence or head is mechanically square, loosen the angle-pointer screw, move the pointer to 0°, and retighten it. The pointer reports the setting; it does not establish that the gauge is square.
- Verify with a test cut if the manual recommends it. Make a 90° trial cut and check the result with a reliable square. INCRA recommends this verification after initial calibration.
Why the adjustment method varies
The shared goal is a fence that is square for a 0° crosscut, but the part you adjust and the surface you reference depend on the gauge. The Grizzly G0994 procedure references the miter bar while pivoting the head; INCRA’s MG2000 uses a cam and references the saw blade; the Grizzly G0970 instructions check the gauge face against the blade. Use your own model’s procedure rather than assuming that another gauge’s adjustment applies.
If the gauge will not stay square
- Recheck the blade-to-table 90° setting and confirm the square is reliable and seated on the intended surfaces.
- Repeat the alignment check after tightening. If tightening shifts the setting, hold the fence or head in position as you secure it, following the manual.
- If the adjustment still moves or the reference surfaces do not sit flush, consult the gauge manual for its specific hardware and procedure; the required tool and adjustment point vary by model.
The manuals cited here do not establish a universal accuracy tolerance or calibration interval. Judge the setting by the actual alignment and, where specified by the maker, a verified trial cut.
