To adjust a thickness planer table, first identify the exact make, model, and version, then follow that machine’s manual to measure the table’s relationship to the cutterhead. Do not use another planer’s tolerance or sprocket settings: they vary by model and manufacture date. A tapered board can point to misalignment, but other setup or machine issues can cause the same result.
Before adjusting the table, rule out other causes
Uneven thickness or taper may result from table misalignment, but it is not proof that the table needs adjustment. Check the workpiece and planer setup first. Grizzly’s planer setup guidance and troubleshooting information in a Powermatic planer manual cover other potential causes.
- Check that the stock is flat and stable rather than warped or twisted.
- Inspect knives or inserts and their setup.
- Check bed rollers, feed components, and table locks.
- Confirm the planer is set up and operated according to its manual.
If these checks do not explain the result, consult the machine’s exact manual for its table-parallelism procedure.
Identify the correct tolerance and procedure
Find the manual for the planer’s full model designation, including its suffix, and confirm any available manufacture or version details. Manufacturer guidance warns that adjustment specifications vary by model, model variation, and manufacture date. The manual determines the measurement reference, acceptable deviation, adjustment points, and safe access procedure.

For context, Grizzly says a side-to-side deviation of 0.002 inch is the maximum for many of its later fixed-head planer models; it also notes that the original G1021 manual allowed 0.004 inch. These are examples, not universal tolerances. Grizzly also gives 0.020 inch as a maximum head-casting-to-table front-to-back deviation in its guidance, again not a universal limit. See Grizzly’s fixed-head planer table-parallelism guidance and apply only the specification for your machine.
Choose a measuring method that matches the manual
The goal is a repeatable measurement of the table relative to the cutterhead or other reference surface specified by the manufacturer. Keep measuring tools clear of knives and moving parts. Disconnect power before inspection or adjustment whenever the manual requires it; Grizzly’s inspection procedure explicitly starts by disconnecting the machine.

- Direct Replacement: Circlip Gaskets Fits Portable planer knife setting gauge ,replacement for Delta 22-540 type 1 & 2 & the TP300,this will work on the 48mm diameter heads
- How to Change the Cutter: Watch the DIY video to learn how to change the cutter.Use it to set the depth of the blades on your planer.Easy to assemble and works perfectly. You can't mount the knives without it
- Premium Quality :The gauge is well made, and has a horizontal bar secured to the uprights using circlips. This allows the bar to move freely, independent of the uprights. This is made for a 12" Delta portable planer (surface planer)
- Planer Positioner: Ensure accurate position of workpiece in planer, ensure precision machining, quick positioning to reduce adjustment time, enhance productivity, reduce operation difficulty, and prevent workpiece from moving during machining
- Purchase Notice:Please check your part number before purchasing! ,Suitable for most planer knives, it is the easiest and most efficient way to reset the blade

| Rotacator or equivalent dial indicator | Grizzly recommends a Rotacator or equivalent dial-indicator setup for precise planer measurements. | Use the reference points and setup specified for the exact model. The tool is optional, not a substitute for the manual. |
| Hardwood gauge block and feeler gauges | Manufacturer procedures describe this as an alternative for comparing clearance. | Repeatability depends on careful placement and following the applicable procedure. See the Grizzly G0675 jointer/planer manual for a manufacturer-described method. |
| Straightedge | Can be relevant to table relationships on some jointer or combination machines. | Do not assume a jointer straightedge procedure measures fixed-head thickness-planer parallelism. |
Measure and adjust in a controlled sequence
- Get the exact manual. Record the full model and version or manufacture details available on the machine. Follow the matching manual, not a procedure for a similar-looking planer.
- Make the machine safe. Disconnect power as directed by the manual. Use its guarding and support instructions, and keep hands and gauges away from knives.
- Set up the specified reference. Position the indicator or gauge block as the manual directs, using the cutterhead body or other stated reference surface—not the knives unless the manufacturer explicitly specifies otherwise.
- Compare measurements with the model’s tolerance. Measure consistently across the locations the manual specifies. Do not treat an example value from another machine as your target.
- Adjust only if the measurements call for it. Some planers use chain-and-sprocket movement for coarse correction and table-to-column fasteners for fine correction. Tooth movement and rotation direction are model- and version-dependent. Mark the original chain or sprocket position before changing it if the manual calls for that adjustment.
- Secure and recheck. Tighten fasteners as specified, reinstall guards and panels, and repeat the measurement before returning the planer to use.
Do not improvise if the procedure involves substantial chain movement, heavy lifting, or removing machine components. Follow the manual’s support instructions or contact the manufacturer. Grizzly’s G0550/G0551 manual, for example, directs owners to customer service for chain adjustment beyond its stated range.
Worked example: Grizzly G0550/G0551
This example applies only to the Grizzly G0550/G0551 procedure; it is not a general planer adjustment specification. The manual directs the owner to disconnect power, put a gauge block on the table beneath one end of the cutterhead, and raise the table until the block barely touches the cutterhead body—not the knives. The other side is then compared with feeler gauges.

- Fit for JET 708529G JWP-15CS JWP-15HO, Freud C045 planer
- Product Function: Use it to set the depth of the blades on the planer and ensure accurate position of the workpiece in planer
For these models, the manual says a side-to-side difference of 0.004 inch or less needs no further adjustment. If the deviation is greater, it describes loosening column cap screws and moving the table, then rechecking until the difference is below 0.004 inch. For a difference greater than 0.016 inch, it directs the user to contact customer service about chain adjustment. Do not transfer these figures or steps to another planer.

- The manual for the machine is unavailable or does not match its model/version.
- The measurement procedure would put a hand or tool near exposed knives or moving parts.
- The machine needs heavy lifting, component removal, or a chain adjustment beyond the manual’s stated range.
- You cannot get a repeatable measurement or the table remains outside the specified tolerance after the prescribed adjustment.
Grizzly notes that some models move approximately 0.008 inch or 0.016 inch per sprocket tooth, depending on the model and version. Those figures are not interchangeable settings; use only the movement and direction specified for the exact machine.
