A liquid-service pressure rating does not establish that a pipe is safe for storing compressed gas: if it fails, PVC can shatter and scatter fragments. This article explains the hazard and safer decision points, but does not provide build instructions or launcher specifications.
Why PVC is dangerous with compressed air
Compressed gas stores energy that can be released suddenly if its container fails. OSHA’s hazard bulletin documents hazards and injuries involving above-ground PVC compressed-gas piping. It reproduces a position from a February 14, 1989 letter signed by Bureau Chief Sam A. Rogers: “It is our position that PVC pipe shall not be used as a means of transporting compressed air.” This is an occupational safety bulletin, not a complete account of private-use law in every location. The bulletin describes a warehouse incident reported by Washington State Labor & Industries in 1988: PVC compressed-air pipe exploded 27 feet above the floor, and a fragment traveled 60 feet into a roll of paper. These are details of one reported incident, not a population statistic or controlled test.
Why a water-pressure rating does not make a safe air chamber
Pipe pressure ratings for liquid service should not be treated as approval for compressed gas. The manufacturer guidance reproduced in a distributor article warns against testing, transporting, or storing compressed air or gas in PVC and CPVC products, citing the risk of shattering, scattered fragments, and severe injury. It does not establish a safe pressure for a homemade launcher. See the PVC/CPVC manufacturer guidance.

Describing parts is not a safety assessment
A secondary air-cannon explainer identifies general components such as a chamber, barrel, and release valve, while also warning that PVC is not rated for compressed gas. Naming components does not demonstrate that a design is safe. See the secondary explainer.

Industrial manuals apply to their named equipment
Commercial industrial air cannons may use specified pressure vessels, operating limits, relief devices, and instructions. For example, the ESS manual lists a maximum operating pressure of 860 kPa (125 psi), a tank rating of 1034 kPa (150 psi), and a relief-valve threshold of 965 kPa (140 psi) for its named commercial system. Those specifications are not DIY design guidance and must not be copied to a homemade device. Consult the ESS air cannon manual.

What to do instead
- Do not pressurize PVC or CPVC pipe with compressed air or gas, or use it as a launcher chamber.
- If you need equipment for an industrial application, use a professionally engineered product only within its own manual, pressure-vessel rating, safety controls, and operating instructions.
- Do not assume an industrial air cannon is a consumer-safe recreational substitute.
