WOOD Magazine’s July 7, 2023 feature describes a 36-by-39-foot-4-inch shop alongside a 16-by-16-foot project design room. Its dimensions and equipment belong to Walker’s particular shop, not a standard every workshop needs to meet.
How large is the workshop?
WOOD Magazine reports 1,670 square feet total: a 36-by-39-foot-4-inch main shop and a 16-by-16-foot project design room. The shop is a dedicated outbuilding above a three-car garage and maintenance room. Its wood-frame construction uses 2-by-6 studs and R-30 insulation on a masonry foundation, with ceiling height ranging from 9 to 17 feet.
The published specifications list 200-amp single-phase and 200-amp three-phase electrical service. These are reported details of Walker’s workshop; the feature does not present them as typical requirements for woodworking spaces. WOOD Magazine’s workshop profile gives the full account.
How did Walker organize the layout?
Storage and workflow shaped the plan from the outset. Walker says, “I am obsessed with organization,” and “we spent a lot of time planning spaces to accommodate all of the tools and accessories.” The shop sits into a hillside, and the location of its 8-foot sliding door helped determine where materials and cutting stations would go.

Move lumber from the door to the first cut
Material racks sit just inside the sliding door, so lumber does not have to be carried across the shop before it is stored or used. A radial-arm saw nearby can cut boards to length. The table saw is positioned so the slider can be opened when ripping long stock. Walker describes the continuation of the workflow as “kind of like dominoes from there.”
Keep tools and accessories close to their workstations
Under the table saw, double-sided vertical drawers hold items including a miter gauge and jigs. A separate drawer stores drills, batteries, and chargers, and includes a timer. A mobile clamp cart keeps clamps together while allowing them to move to the work.

What custom features stand out?
- Mobile routing table: A mobile-base table has a lift mechanism made from used truck parts and airbags, allowing the table to be raised or lowered.
- Floor sweeps: Hinged doors and toggle switches operate floor sweeps. The original idea used magnetic switches, but Walker abandoned it because suction could slam a door shut while the collector continued clearing the ducts.
- Table-saw storage: Deep, double-sided drawers use the space beneath the saw for jigs and accessories.
- Mobile clamp cart: A dedicated cart keeps clamps organized and portable.
These are solutions built or adapted for this workshop, rather than off-the-shelf kits identified by the feature.

WOOD Magazine’s “About his shop” specifications list a 3-hp Oneida cyclone dust collector, two JDS Air-Tech air cleaners, and a 10-hp Eagle compressor. The article reports the equipment present in Walker’s shop; it does not compare products or establish that these capacities are right for another workshop.

For heating, the shop lists a Trane heat pump, a 25-kilowatt electric furnace, and a wood-burning stove; the Trane heat pump also provides cooling. The feature describes ten 2-by-6-foot skylights, forty-eight 4-foot fluorescent lights, ten 75-watt recessed can lights, and a wall of windows. These are the lighting and climate details of this particular building, not universal design specifications.
