For most homes, aim for indoor relative humidity (RH) around 30% to 50%. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends that range when possible and says to keep RH below 60%; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises keeping it no higher than 50% all day. These are moisture-management guidelines, not a guarantee of comfort or health for every person or home.

A hygrometer can help you check RH, but the reading is only part of the picture: temperature, season, condensation, damp materials and moisture sources matter too. If readings are regularly high, address leaks and moisture sources before relying on a dehumidifier; if the air is too dry, use a humidifier cautiously and keep monitoring.

What Indoor Humidity Range Should You Aim For?

EPA’s general indoor-air guidance recommends 30% to 50% RH. Its mold and moisture guidance says to keep indoor humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50% if possible. CDC gives a stricter ceiling: no higher than 50% all day. In practice, use 30% to 50% as a useful target band, and take persistent dampness or condensation seriously.

There is no single RH reading that ensures comfort in every home. ASHRAE notes that thermal comfort also depends on temperature, season, clothing and activity, among other factors. Relative humidity is temperature-dependent, so the same RH reading at different temperatures does not describe the same amount of water vapor or guarantee the same comfort.

Condensation can form when moist indoor air meets a cold surface, such as a window or exterior wall. If you see recurring condensation, staining or dampness, investigate the surface and moisture conditions rather than treating a room’s average RH as the only indicator.

Why Persistent High Humidity Matters

Persistent dampness can support mold and other biological growth and can damage buildings and furnishings. A brief rise after showering or cooking is different from recurring high readings, wet materials or condensation that does not clear.

CDC summarizes a 2004 Institute of Medicine review that found sufficient evidence linking indoor mold exposure with upper respiratory symptoms, cough and wheeze in otherwise healthy people, asthma symptoms in people with asthma, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis in susceptible people. These findings do not mean that a particular RH reading predicts an individual health outcome, or that changing RH treats a health condition.

Moisture may come from leaks, showers, cooking, clothes dryers and other appliances. Warm, humid outdoor air can also add moisture indoors, so opening windows is not always an effective way to dry a home.

How to Measure Humidity Before You Act

Use a hygrometer or humidity meter to check indoor RH. EPA identifies a humidity meter as a straightforward way to monitor it. If you are investigating a problem, check more than one area and note whether you also find condensation, leaks, damp materials or musty odors.

Consider checking living areas as well as places where moisture may collect, such as bathrooms, basements, laundry areas and rooms with recurring condensation. A single reading is less useful than repeated readings alongside observations of the conditions in the home.

If materials are damp or wet, address the water source and dry them promptly. EPA says to dry wet materials as soon as possible, ideally within 24 to 48 hours. That timeframe is EPA guidance for drying wet materials, not a guarantee that mold will or will not develop.

Signs to Look For

Possible Signs of Excess Moisture

Look for recurring condensation, visible mold, musty smells, damp materials or water stains. Check for leaks and moisture around plumbing, windows, roofs, foundations and appliances. A musty smell or visible mold calls for attention to both the mold and its moisture source.

Humidity problems may be localized. A comfortable reading in one room does not rule out dampness in a basement, bathroom, closet or other area.

Possible Signs of Air That Is Too Dry

Dry or irritated skin, eyes or throat and static can occur when indoor air is dry, though these signs alone do not establish an RH level or its cause. If you use a humidifier, monitor RH and watch for condensation or dampness so that adding moisture does not create another problem.

Common Sources of Indoor Moisture

Start by looking for and correcting moisture sources. Common sources include:

  • Leaks or water entry: plumbing, roofs, windows, foundations or other parts of the building.
  • Everyday activities: showers, cooking, laundry and other moisture-generating activities.
  • Exhaust that does not discharge outdoors: bathroom or kitchen fans and clothes dryers should vent outdoors where applicable.
  • Outdoor air: warm, humid air entering through ventilation or open windows can add moisture in some conditions.
  • Damp materials: wet building materials or furnishings that have not been dried promptly.

Humidity Trouble: What to Check

Use these observations to help decide what to investigate. They are clues, not a diagnosis.

Observation What to check First response
Repeatedly high RH readings Leaks, damp materials, condensation and moisture-generating activities Correct the moisture source, use exhaust vented outdoors, and continue monitoring
Condensation on windows or other surfaces Indoor moisture and cold surfaces Address moisture sources and investigate recurring condensation
Musty smell or visible mold Dampness, leaks or wet materials Remove mold and fix the moisture problem, following CDC guidance
Dampness after a shower, cooking or laundry Whether exhaust fans and the dryer vent outdoors Use properly vented exhaust and address moisture that persists
Dry-feeling air and low RH readings Whether added moisture is needed and whether a humidifier can be maintained safely Use a humidifier cautiously and monitor for condensation or dampness

Exhaust Fans, Appliances and Ventilation

Use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans for moisture-generating activities, and make sure they vent outdoors. Clothes dryers should also vent outdoors. If moisture lingers or condensation recurs, check whether the exhaust is working as intended and whether other moisture sources are present.

Ventilation is not automatically drying: warm, humid outdoor air can add moisture indoors. Consider outdoor conditions as well as indoor readings when deciding how to respond.

Dehumidifiers and Humidifiers

An air conditioner or dehumidifier can help lower indoor humidity; a humidifier or vaporizer can raise it when air is too dry. These are conditional tools, not substitutes for correcting leaks, drying wet materials or addressing other moisture sources. Monitor RH and check for condensation or dampness to avoid overcorrecting.

CDC advises keeping home humidity no higher than 50% all day. If you use a humidifier, clean cool-mist and ultrasonic models according to the manufacturer’s instructions. EPA says distilled water can reduce the potential for those humidifiers to disperse minerals into the air.

What to Do About Mold or Damp Materials

If you find visible mold or notice a musty smell, CDC advises removing the mold and fixing the moisture problem. Changing the humidity reading does not replace mold removal or repair of a leak.

Dry wet materials promptly. EPA recommends drying damp or wet materials as soon as possible, ideally within 24 to 48 hours. If water entry or dampness continues, correct that problem rather than relying only on a machine to change the air reading.

A Practical Humidity Plan for Homeowners

  1. Measure. Use a hygrometer to check indoor RH, and take repeat readings if you are investigating a problem.
  2. Look for moisture. Check for leaks, condensation, visible mold, musty odors and damp materials.
  3. Correct the source. Repair water problems and use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans and clothes dryers vented outdoors.
  4. Dry wet materials promptly. EPA recommends drying damp or wet materials as soon as possible, ideally within 24 to 48 hours.
  5. Use equipment conditionally. Consider an air conditioner or dehumidifier to lower RH, or a monitored humidifier when air is too dry; do not treat equipment as a substitute for fixing moisture sources.
  6. Recheck. Keep monitoring RH and look for recurring condensation or dampness.

What should indoor humidity be in winter?

The dossier’s cited guidance does not establish a separate winter target. Use the general guidance from EPA and CDC, and pay attention to condensation and dampness, which can signal a moisture problem.

How do I lower humidity in my home?

Check for and correct leaks and other moisture sources, use kitchen and bathroom exhaust fans vented outdoors, and vent clothes dryers outdoors. An air conditioner or dehumidifier can help lower RH, but it does not replace fixing the source.

What should I do if I see mold or smell mustiness?

CDC advises removing mold and fixing the moisture problem. Humidity management alone does not remove existing mold or repair a leak.

Can I use a humidifier if the air feels dry?

A humidifier can raise humidity, but monitor RH and watch for condensation or dampness. EPA recommends cleaning cool-mist and ultrasonic humidifiers according to the manufacturer’s instructions; distilled water can reduce the potential for minerals to be dispersed into the air.
