The fix that works fastest is source removal. Find the wet, decaying material where flies laid their eggs, seal and remove it, clean and dry the area, then inspect nearby drains and hidden spaces. Killing visible maggots alone may reduce what you see, but it will not stop new larvae if the breeding material remains.
The fast fix is not killing every maggot you can see—it is finding and removing the wet, decaying material where flies laid their eggs. Tie up and remove the contaminated waste, clean and dry the container or surface, then inspect nearby drains, cracks, baseboards, and hidden spaces for stragglers or a second source. Use fly traps only after the breeding material is gone.

Most household maggots are fly larvae. House flies and blow flies can breed in garbage, spoiled food, pet waste, manure, rotting vegetation, damp organic debris, and a dead animal. In warm conditions, blow-fly larvae can develop quickly, so one overlooked leak or carcass can create a startling number of larvae.
What to do first
- Keep people and pets away. Do not let children or animals investigate the area. Do not spray chemicals on food, dishes, people, pets, or wounds.
- Find the breeding source before treating the larvae. Check the nearest garbage bag and can first, then recycling bins, compost, pet-waste areas, spoiled food, mop buckets, damp organic debris, and the spaces behind or beneath appliances.
- Look for a hidden animal if the pattern does not fit a trash problem. A sudden appearance of large blow flies, or larvae emerging from a wall, ceiling, chimney, crawlspace, or another inaccessible location, can indicate a dead rodent, bird, or other animal.
- Remove and seal the contaminated material. Tie the garbage bag tightly and move it to the outdoor waste container. Do not carry an open, leaking bag through the house if you can avoid it.
- Clean the container and surrounding area. Remove residue, wash the garbage can or hard surface with an appropriate household cleaner, and let it dry completely before replacing the bag.
- Search beyond the original pile. Mature maggots may leave a wet food source and crawl toward a dry place to pupate. Check floor edges, cracks, baseboards, corners, and concealed dry spaces nearby.
- Deal with adult flies that remain. A flyswatter is enough for a few flies. For ongoing monitoring and adult-fly reduction after cleanup, sticky fly traps can help. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.
Why killing visible maggots is not enough
The larvae on the floor are usually only the part of the problem that has become visible. If the garbage leak, carcass, spoiled food, or other moist organic material remains, it can continue producing larvae and adult flies.
#1 Best Overall
- Kills Maggots: Spray directly on infested trash bins, compost areas, or anywhere you see outdoor maggots
- Repels Flies: Prevents flies from gathering in and around your bins
- High-Concentrate Botanical Formula: Six essential oils in a concentrated botanical base with a fresh Citrus Canopy scent provides effective fly & maggot control
- Helps Prevent Infestations: Creates a protective treatment for outdoor trash areas to help prevent infestations when applied as directed
- Apply Before & After Trash Day: Routine use of FlyBye prevents reinfestation
Spraying or crushing the maggots you can see may provide temporary relief, but it does not remove eggs, larvae hidden in the source, or pupae in nearby dry spaces. Source removal is the step that stops the cycle. Afterward, continue watching the area for several days because pupae or adult flies that already emerged may remain.
Where to look for the source
| What you see | Places to inspect | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Maggots concentrated around a bin | Leaking garbage bag, food residue under the liner, recycling residue, the bottom of the can, or a nearby cabinet | Remove the bag, wash the can and floor, and dry both thoroughly |
| Large metallic or blue-green flies | Garbage, pet waste, dead animals, rotting vegetation, compost, wall voids, attics, chimneys, or crawlspaces | Search for an organic source; call a professional if it is inaccessible |
| Larvae scattered away from the garbage | Floor edges, cracks, baseboards, spaces beneath appliances, and dry concealed areas | Vacuum or remove the stragglers safely, then keep searching for the wet source |
| Tiny fuzzy flies around a drain | Sink, shower, bathtub, basement, floor, or utility drain | Inspect and mechanically remove the organic film inside the drain |
If the “maggots” are coming from a drain
Not every infestation comes from a garbage bag. Drain flies are tiny, fuzzy, moth-like flies that often appear around sinks, showers, bathtubs, and floor drains. Their larvae live in the gelatinous organic film—often called biofilm—that builds up inside a drain or trap.
To test a suspected drain, temporarily cover the opening and check whether adult flies emerge from another drain. Inspect one drain at a time so you can identify the source.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe preferred treatment is mechanical cleaning:
- Remove the drain cover where possible.
- Scrub the drain opening and accessible pipe surfaces with a stiff brush to break up the film.
- Clean the trap if it is accessible and safe to do so.
- Flush and rinse according to the fixture or cleaner instructions.
- Keep the drain clean and as dry as practical while monitoring for new adults.
A biological or enzyme drain cleaner may help break down remaining organic buildup, but it is supplementary. It should not replace brushing or diagnosis. Do not assume that boiling water, bleach, or a chemical drain cleaner will solve a drain-fly breeding site; extension guidance indicates that these approaches do not remove the relevant buildup reliably. Never mix drain products or combine bleach with other cleaners.

Should you use insecticide?
Usually, sanitation and source removal are the durable treatment. An indoor flying-insect aerosol labeled for household use may provide short-term control of adult flies, but it will not solve the infestation while the breeding source remains.
- Use only a product specifically labeled for the indoor situation you have.
- Follow every label direction, including ventilation, re-entry, food-covering, and application restrictions.
- Never use agricultural, livestock, manure-pile, or professional-use maggot products inside a home.
- Never apply pesticide to food, dishes, countertops used for food preparation, people, pets, or wounds.
- Do not increase the dose, mix products, or use a product off-label.
Aerosol treatment is an optional, short-term adult-fly measure—not a substitute for removing garbage, animal waste, decaying vegetation, drain biofilm, or a carcass.
When maggots are on a person or animal
Maggots in or on a wound are not a household-cleanup problem. Do not casually remove wound-infesting larvae at home or treat the wound with household insecticide. Seek immediate medical attention. For a pet, livestock animal, or wildlife, contact a veterinarian or the appropriate animal-health or wildlife professional.

When to call a professional
Contact a licensed pest-control operator when the infestation is heavy, keeps returning after careful source removal, spreads to multiple rooms, or involves a suspected dead animal inside a wall, ceiling, chimney, crawlspace, or other inaccessible area. Do not dismantle walls or ceilings casually: you could spread contamination, damage the structure, or miss the actual source.
A professional may also be appropriate when you cannot safely identify the material, when flies continue appearing despite cleanup, or when the number of flies suggests a large hidden breeding site. Some insecticides are restricted to professional use.
Prevent another maggot infestation
- Use tightly closed garbage bags and a lidded waste container.
- Clean the inside and underside of garbage cans regularly to remove food residue and odor.
- Keep outdoor trash containers as far from doors and windows as practical.
- Remove pet waste promptly.
- Remove dead animals, rotting vegetation, wet mulch, and lawn debris from around the home.
- Keep compost covered and manage wet organic material promptly.
- Repair damaged door and window screens. Standard 14- to 16-mesh screening is commonly recommended for excluding flies.
- Keep drains clean, and keep problem drains dry when practical.
- Monitor for adult flies for at least several days after cleanup.
A practical decision guide
Larvae around a leaking trash bag? Remove the bag, wash and dry the can and surrounding surface, and inspect nearby dry hiding places.
Tiny fuzzy flies clustered at a drain? Treat it as a drain-biofilm problem: identify the drain and scrub the buildup rather than relying on spray.

How do I get rid of maggots quickly?
Remove and seal the contaminated organic material, clean and dry the container or surface, and inspect nearby cracks, baseboards, and concealed dry spaces. Traps can reduce adult flies after the source has been removed, but they do not eliminate the breeding site.
Can maggots come from a drain?
Drain flies are tiny, fuzzy, moth-like flies associated with sinks, showers, tubs, and floor drains. Their larvae feed in gelatinous organic film inside the drain. Scrubbing the drain and accessible trap is more important than spraying the adult flies.
Is it safe to spray maggots?
No. Do not use household insecticide on a person, pet, food, dishes, or a wound. Larvae in a wound require immediate medical attention; contact a veterinarian for an affected animal.

The Bottom Line
Do not focus only on the maggots you can see. Bag and remove the wet organic source, wash and dry the container or surface, inspect drains and hidden spaces, and use traps only for adult flies that remain. If larvae are in a wound, or flies keep appearing from a wall or ceiling, stop treating it as a simple trash problem and call a medical, veterinary, wildlife, or licensed pest-control professional.
