In a September 29, 2026 announcement, VDOT scheduled construction to begin October 12, 2026. As of October 11, the announced start date was still in the future, and the announcement does not confirm whether work began as scheduled. How broader Route 17 concerns differ from Exit 28 evidence
A VDOT technical memorandum discusses safety evaluation at the Route 17 and Route 50 intersection, including driver awareness and rear-end crashes. It also mentions evaluating deer-warning signs on Route 17 between SR 712 and Route 50. Those corridor references do not establish crash findings at the I-66 Exit 28 interchange.
