HVLP Sprayers: How They Work and How to Choose One

HVLP describes a lower-pressure, high-volume-air spraying approach available in turbine and compressor-fed systems. Choose the gun, air supply, and fluid set for the coating and follow the equipment and safety instructions.

HVLP means “high volume, low pressure.” An HVLP sprayer uses a comparatively large volume of air at lower pressure to atomize coating at the gun’s tip or nozzle. The term describes a spraying approach, not one single machine: systems may be powered by a turbine or by a compressor, and the gun must match its air source, coating, and fluid set.

How an HVLP sprayer works

In a turbine system, a turbine sends warm, dry air through a hose to a purpose-designed spray gun. At the gun, air meets the coating as it passes through the tip/nozzle and breaks it into a spray. The basic turbine setup consists of the turbine, hose, and gun. Campbell Hausfeld describes the process this way: “Atomization of the coating is achieved when the air mixes with the stream of fluid passing through the tip/nozzle.” Campbell Hausfeld’s turbine-system manual explains this operation for its equipment.

Compressor-fed HVLP guns use compressed air instead of a turbine. They need a compressor and delivery setup capable of supplying the specific gun’s required air at the gun. A turbine gun and a compressor-fed gun are not automatically interchangeable; follow the manufacturer’s requirements for the exact model.

What to consider when choosing an HVLP system

Begin with the coating and project, then verify that the proposed gun and air source can handle them. No single system is best for every job, and the cited sources do not establish an independent head-to-head winner.

HomeRight Super Finish Max HVLP Paint and Stain Sprayer, 3 Brass Tips
  • Life changing paint sprayer: this paint sprayer requires less thinning compared to finish max or other hand-held paint sprayers
  • Easy to use for eager Painters: fast and easy setup, multiple spray settings and quick cleaning make this sprayer a top pick for do-it-yourselfers
  • Lightweight: despite having more power than the finish max, this paint sprayer is still lightweight in the user’s hand
  • Spray everything with less thinning: ideal for spraying a smooth finish on fences, decks, furniture, cabinets, crafts, dressers or anything you want
  • Best purchase you will ever make: save money by using this paint sprayer to tackle all of your household painting and staining projects
  • Air source and delivery: Identify whether the gun is turbine-powered or compressor-fed. For compressor-fed equipment, verify adequate compressor capacity for the gun and any other shop equipment, and use a hose sized to deliver the needed air volume. Check and set pressure at the gun as its manufacturer directs. The archived EPA spray-painting checklist offers practical setup guidance, but it is not a statement of current nationwide rules.
  • Coating and fluid set: Match the needle and nozzle to the coating and the exact gun. A fluid-set number refers to corresponding needle/nozzle sizes; consult the gun maker’s selection guide rather than assuming one brand’s chart applies to another.
  • Project scale and pace: Consider the area to cover, desired production pace, and the setup and cleanup the job allows. The available cited material does not establish a universal production-rate comparison for all HVLP systems.
  • Finish and control: HVLP can reduce overspray, but results still depend on compatible equipment, adequate air delivery, coating, and technique. Follow the gun maker’s instructions and practice on a suitable test surface when appropriate.
  • Portability, cleaning, and consumables: Compare the turbine or compressor arrangement, hose, gun, cleaning requirements, and compatible fluid sets. If the coating maker or sprayer manual calls for it, strain the fluid before spraying.
  • Safety and work area: Check the coating’s safety data sheet and the sprayer’s current manual before choosing where and how to spray. Airborne coating and ignition hazards require controls regardless of the sprayer type.

How to match the nozzle and coating

Nozzle size is not a universal HVLP setting. Use the chart for the exact gun and follow both the coating maker’s directions and the sprayer manual. For example, Apollo publishes these brand-specific starting guidelines; they should not be treated as specifications for other guns:

Apollo fluid-set guidance Examples Apollo associates with the size
0.8–1.0 mm Thin coatings such as stains, dyes, and lacquers
1.3–1.5 mm Pigmented topcoats and varnishes
1.8 mm or larger Heavier coatings such as waterborne primers and latex

Apollo also specifies size-dependent nozzle and air-cap pairings in its own system. Consult its manufacturer FAQ for that system’s guidance, not as a universal chart. Graco likewise advises selecting the fluid set for the material and sprayer; see its HVLP FAQs.

How to prepare and apply coating

  1. Read the coating and equipment instructions. Confirm that the coating is suitable for the gun and fluid set. Follow the coating manufacturer’s preparation and thinning instructions; do not reduce or otherwise alter it beyond those directions.
  2. Prepare the surface and material. Start with a clean workpiece. Strain the coating when directed by the coating maker or sprayer instructions; Graco recommends straining fluids before spraying.
  3. Check the air supply and gun setup. For a compressor-fed gun, confirm that the compressor and hose deliver enough air, then set pressure at the gun according to the manufacturer. Install the specified fluid set and any matching air cap.
  4. Spray with consistent technique. Keep the gun square to the target and maintain a consistent distance through each stroke. The EPA checklist recommends these practices alongside using the correct tip and pressure; they support control but do not guarantee a particular finish.
  5. Clean and store the equipment as directed. Follow the sprayer manual and coating instructions for cleaning, disposal, and storage. Do not leave coating in the gun or fluid passages unless the manufacturer specifically permits it.

Turbine air can be warm and may accelerate drying. Graco notes that a slower-drying reducer or thinner may be suitable in some cases, but any adjustment must remain within the coating manufacturer’s instructions.

Safety: control vapors, ignition, and exposure

Use the coating’s safety data sheet and the current manual for the exact sprayer to determine ventilation, protective equipment, electrical requirements, cleanup, and disposal. HVLP may reduce overspray compared with some alternatives, but it does not make atomized coating harmless or eliminate exposure controls.

A Graco manual for a particular turbine product family warns that the motor can spark and that sparks may ignite flammable vapors. For the equipment covered by that manual, it directs users to keep the turbine at least 20 feet (6.1 m) from areas where hazardous concentrations of flammable vapors are likely, never put it inside a spray booth, place it in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area, and remove ignition sources. These are product-specific instructions, not a substitute for the current manual for another model. Consult the Graco manual and the current documentation for your own equipment.
