Identify the vine and where it is growing before you cut, pull, or treat it. A small ground-cover patch, English ivy climbing a tree, and a persistent kudzu infestation call for different approaches. For manageable patches, start with careful removal and plan to check for regrowth; for ivy on a tree, cut the vines around the trunk rather than pulling down the upper growth.

Identify the vine and the problem area first

Look closely at the plant and note whether it is covering the ground, climbing a tree or structure, or spreading across a larger area. Control depends on the species, site, season, and severity of the infestation. The methods below address common cases, but they are not interchangeable: in particular, poison ivy is a separate safety issue.

These recommendations draw on U.S. university extension guidance, primarily for Maryland and Pennsylvania. Local invasive-plant lists and rules may differ. Maryland, for example, prohibits English ivy and Atlantic/Irish ivy; check the rules that apply where you live. University of Maryland Extension: English Ivy.

Choose a method that fits the site

Situation Starting approach Tradeoffs and follow-up
Small ground-cover patch Pull or dig roots where practical; gather cut vines with a heavy-duty garden rake and cut them with a suitable tool. Root fragments or stems touching soil may regrow, so collect cut material and revisit the patch. University of Maryland Extension; University of Maryland Extension.
English ivy climbing a tree Sever the vines around the full trunk circumference to create an ivy-free band about 3–4 feet above ground; remove roots where practical. Do not yank the vines above the cut. Let them die and fall naturally. University of Maryland Extension.
Large or persistent infestation Work in manageable sections. Combine mechanical methods such as pulling, digging, cutting, or repeat mowing as appropriate. A single effort may not control an established population; monitor and repeat, and seek locally appropriate advice when needed. University of Maryland Extension; University of Maryland Extension.
Considering herbicide Confirm the product label covers the plant and site, then use only the labeled application method and protective equipment. Timing and suitability vary by species and product. Avoid drift or contact with desirable plants. University of Maryland Extension; Penn State Extension.

Remove a manageable ground-cover patch

  1. Pull or dig what you can. Work roots free where practical instead of simply cutting the visible growth. Some vines can regrow from root pieces or stems in contact with soil.
  2. Gather and cut remaining vines. For English ivy ground cover, University of Maryland Extension suggests gathering vines with a heavy-duty rake and cutting with a Swedish brush axe or another suitable tool. Hand pruners, loppers, or a pruning saw may suit other stems and work areas; choose for the material rather than assuming one tool fits every vine. A rake helps gather vines but does not, by itself, eradicate them. University of Maryland Extension.
  3. Consider smothering small areas. Light-blocking material such as cardboard or newspaper under mulch can suppress growth. Check for shoots at the edges and through gaps, and remove returning growth.
  4. Inspect again and repeat as needed. Persistent invasive plants often require repeated control. Choose an approach you can maintain and monitor the treated area for regrowth.

Stop English ivy from climbing a tree

Cut the ivy rather than trying to strip or pull the upper vines from the trunk. Pulling can damage bark, while severing the vine interrupts its connection to the roots.

For detailed English ivy instructions, see University of Maryland Extension: Invasives in Your Woodland: English Ivy. Large infestations in a tree canopy can have consequences beyond vine removal: invasive plants can damage or kill trees, and substantial canopy loss may require restoration planning. Manage kudzu and other persistent vines

Kudzu is a perennial vine with a large root system and vegetative spread, so cutting the top growth once is not a reliable eradication plan. University of Maryland Extension recommends keeping affected areas cultivated or repeatedly mowed to keep growth under control. Its 2022 kudzu guidance says the vine can grow up to 100 feet; that figure describes kudzu, not invasive vines generally. University of Maryland Extension: Kudzu.

Use herbicide only as a labeled, targeted option

Herbicide is not a shortcut that works the same way on every vine. Before using a product, verify that its label permits use on the identified plant and at the intended site. Follow the label’s application directions and protective-equipment requirements, and take care to avoid desirable plants. Timing and application methods vary by species and product. For English ivy, Penn State Extension notes that young regrowth leaves are less waxy and may be more susceptible to herbicide than mature leaves. That does not replace the product label or establish that a particular product is suitable for every property. Penn State Extension: English Ivy in the Landscape.

Treat poison ivy as a separate safety case

Poison ivy is not English ivy, and ordinary vine-removal advice should not be applied to it. Penn State Extension advises against removal methods that can spread urushiol-bearing plant material and describes a species-specific cut-stump approach; it also warns that vine removal can damage tree bark. Follow the source’s complete safety instructions before attempting treatment: Penn State Extension: Manage Poison Ivy Safely.

When to get site-specific help

Consider local extension or qualified removal advice if you cannot identify the vine, the growth is extensive, or it is entangled in a tree canopy or around structures where removal could cause damage. The appropriate response depends on the plant, site, and severity; major tree-canopy loss may also call for restoration beyond cutting vines.
