How to Wire an Old Westinghouse Motor Safely

The brand name alone cannot identify an old Westinghouse motor’s connections. Find the exact nameplate and wiring diagram, isolate power, and get qualified help if markings are uncertain.

You cannot determine how to wire an old Westinghouse motor from the brand name alone. The safe connection depends on the exact motor’s nameplate and its own wiring diagram, typically on the nameplate or inside the connection box. Do not apply power until you have identified the motor and confirmed its diagram. If the markings are missing, unreadable, contradictory, or the motor has been modified, have a qualified electrician or motor repair shop identify it.

What to identify before wiring

Record and photograph the complete nameplate and connection box before changing any connections. Nameplate information helps establish electrical performance and physical dimensions relevant to installation and replacement, but formats vary by manufacturer. See ABB’s guide to reading a NEMA motor nameplate.

  • Complete model and serial information
  • Phase, rated voltage, and frequency
  • Horsepower and speed
  • Every terminal or lead marking
  • Existing links, wiring, capacitor labels, and any other components in the connection box

“Old Westinghouse motor” is not enough information to determine a lead-to-line connection. Wire colors and diagrams from similar-looking motors are not reliable substitutes for this motor’s own markings and instructions.

Safe identification-first workflow

  1. Isolate the power. Disconnect the supply before working on the motor or opening its connection box, and use suitable procedures to prevent accidental re-energization and verify that the equipment is de-energized. A pump owner manual gives the instruction, “Disconnect power to motor before working on pump or motor.”
  2. Document what is present. Photograph the nameplate, connection box, terminal markings, links, capacitor labels, and existing wiring before disturbing connections.
  3. Read the motor’s actual ratings and markings. Note the phase, voltage, frequency, horsepower, speed, and lead or terminal labels. Do not infer connections from color or another motor’s diagram.
  4. Find the exact connection diagram. Use the diagram on this motor’s nameplate or in its connection box, or an applicable manufacturer document for the exact model. Westinghouse’s Documents and Manuals index provides a route to product documents, but the brand and age alone do not identify an applicable manual.
  5. Stop if identification is uncertain. If the nameplate or diagram is missing, illegible, contradictory, or the motor appears altered, do not guess or energize it. Ask a qualified electrician or motor repair shop to identify it.

Grounding and installation

Follow the grounding instructions for the exact motor and comply with applicable electrical codes. The pump manual cited above says to ground the motor before connecting it to the power supply and directs readers to follow the motor’s nameplate or connection-box diagram when its illustration does not match. These are general manual instructions, not a wiring diagram for an unidentified Westinghouse motor.

Terminal rules can also depend on equipment connected to the motor. For example, Yaskawa’s drive documentation distinguishes drive supply terminals from motor terminals and gives context-specific grounding warnings. Those drive instructions are not wiring directions for this motor.

What a current check can—and cannot—tell you

A clamp meter does not identify unknown motor leads or make an uncertain connection safe. After the motor and installation have been correctly identified, a qualified person may use an appropriate clamp meter for a three-phase current check. A Pumpa Blue Line manual recommends checking that the draws on all three phases are balanced and do not exceed the values on the motor type plate. That is a diagnostic check, not a method for choosing wiring connections.

If you are replacing the motor

Do not choose a replacement based on the Westinghouse name or horsepower alone. Compare the original motor and the proposed replacement against the application and installation: phase, supply voltage and frequency, horsepower, speed or poles, frame and shaft or mounting fit, enclosure and environment, duty, and the applicable connection diagram. The original motor’s nameplate and physical fit must be established before a compatible replacement can be identified.
