To make a simple crinkle baby toy, sew two fabric squares around a crinkle insert, leaving a gap to turn the piece right side out. Folded ribbon tabs are optional. Close the gap with perimeter topstitching, then inspect the seams and attachments before use. The steps below make a soft square toy; they do not certify it as safe for an infant.
Choose an insert and gather materials
The enclosed layer creates the crinkling sound. Sewing tutorials demonstrate both reused food packaging and purpose-made craft crinkle material, but they do not compare the options in safety or performance testing.

For either approach, gather two pieces of washable woven fabric, thread, scissors, pins or clips, and a sewing machine. Prewash and dry the fabric before cutting, as the tutorials recommend. If you want tabs, add short lengths of ribbon. Keep the design simple so there are fewer attachments and seams to secure.
Make the toy
- Cut the fabric. Cut two matching squares. Hobbycraft’s beginner project uses 8-inch squares; that is an example from its tutorial, not a required size. Press the fabric before adding the insert.
- Position any ribbon tabs. Cut short pieces of ribbon and fold each in half. Place the raw ends along the edge of one fabric piece, with the folded loop pointing inward between the fabric layers. Pin or clip them in place so their ends will be caught in the seam. The tutorials include ribbon tabs as an optional feature.
- Sew the outer seam. Place the fabric pieces right sides together. Sew around the edge, leaving a gap wide enough to turn the toy. Hobbycraft uses a 5 mm seam allowance for its square project. A separate shaped project from That Sewing Life uses a half-inch seam allowance and a 3-inch turning gap; those are project-specific measurements, not universal requirements.
- Place or enclose the crinkle layer. Follow the construction method for your chosen insert. If using packaging, avoid unnecessary needle holes and take care not to tear it as you work. Keep the insert clear of the area needed for turning and closing the opening.
- Turn and finish. Turn the toy right side out through the opening and tuck the raw edges inward. Topstitch around the perimeter to close the gap and finish the edge, as the tutorials demonstrate. Trim loose thread ends.
Inspect it before use
Check the finished toy for loose seams, unsecured ribbon tabs, an exposed insert, or damage. Stop using it if the fabric, stitching, tabs, or insert become loose or damaged. These are practical craft checks, not a validated safety test or a guarantee of suitability for unsupervised infant use.

What making one does—and does not—establish about safety
Sewing tutorials explain construction; they do not establish that a homemade toy meets applicable toy-safety requirements. Do not describe a toy as “safe” or “non-toxic” solely because it uses fabric or a particular insert.
For a U.S. selling context, the CPSC’s 2021 Resellers Guide to Selling Safer Products summarizes requirements for children’s toys concerning lead, lead in paint, phthalates, small parts, and ASTM F963-17. It says toys intended for children under three must undergo CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory testing for small parts. The guide also says upcycled material must be tested if assurances about its compliance cannot be obtained. This is a U.S. regulatory summary, not individualized legal advice or a complete account of requirements in other jurisdictions. A homemade project and the checks above are not substitutes for applicable compliance assessment.
