The basic process is simple: remove the hose and every attachment, close the dedicated shutoff for the outdoor faucet if your home has one, open the faucet to drain the isolated pipe, and store the hose somewhere protected. Add a fitted insulated cover as supplemental protection—especially if there is no separate shutoff—but do not rely on a cover alone to protect a conventional, water-filled pipe.
Complete these steps before freezing temperatures are expected in your area. The right date depends on your local forecast, the faucet’s exposure, and how quickly temperatures fall around your home.

Quick pre-freeze checklist
- Remove the garden hose and all attachments. Take off nozzles, splitters, timers, filters, quick-connect fittings, and anything else connected to the faucet.
- Drain the hose separately. Stretch it out or hold one end higher so trapped water can escape, then store it in a protected location if possible.
- Close the dedicated outdoor-faucet shutoff. Look inside the basement, garage, utility room, crawlspace, or near the point where the water line enters the house. This is not normally the same as the home’s main water shutoff.
- Open the outdoor faucet. Once the dedicated shutoff is closed, leave the exterior faucet open briefly so water remaining in the isolated pipe section can drain.
- Install an insulated outdoor faucet cover. Use one that fits the faucet and seals reasonably well around its base. Treat it as an extra layer of protection, not a substitute for draining a conventional faucet.
- Check related plumbing separately. Irrigation lines, backflow devices, rain barrels, and pool or spa connections may require their own winterization procedure.
Why outdoor faucets can burst
When water freezes inside a faucet or supply pipe, it expands. The resulting pressure can split the faucet body, the pipe behind the wall, or a fitting inside the home. Damage may not become obvious until the ice melts and pressurized water escapes.
The most vulnerable arrangement is a conventional hose bibb or sillcock supplied by a pipe that remains full of water during freezing weather. Removing the hose and draining the isolated section reduces the amount of water that can freeze in that exposed run.

How to winterize a conventional outdoor faucet
1. Remove everything connected to the faucet
Start with the hose, even if the faucet is marketed as frost-free. Remove any nozzle, splitter, hose timer, filter, spray attachment, or quick-connect accessory as well. An attachment can trap water and prevent the faucet from draining as designed.
Leaving a hose connected is a common failure point. It can retain water at the faucet, block drainage, and allow freezing conditions to damage a faucet or the pipe connected to it.
2. Drain and store the hose
Disconnect the hose at the faucet and drain it completely. A hose that is fully drained may survive outside in some climates, but storing it in a garage, shed, basement, or other protected area helps limit damage from repeated freezing, thawing, and temperature swings. Avoid leaving it kinked or tightly coiled while wet.

Many homes have a small valve serving the exterior faucet. Common locations include:
- on the water line near the basement ceiling;
- inside a basement, crawlspace, garage, or utility room;
- near where the supply pipe passes through the foundation or exterior wall; or
- in a mechanical or plumbing access area.
Trace the pipe inward from the outdoor faucet if necessary. A dedicated valve may be a lever-style ball valve or a round-handle stop valve. Close it fully according to the valve design. If the valve is difficult to turn, leaking, or visibly corroded, do not force it; arrange for repair before freezing weather if possible.
Do not routinely shut off the home’s main water supply just to winterize one outdoor faucet. The main shutoff is relevant to a whole-house vacancy plan or a burst-pipe emergency, not the normal procedure for an exterior faucet with a dedicated valve.
4. Open the outdoor faucet to drain the isolated section
After closing the dedicated shutoff, open the outdoor faucet. Water should flow briefly and then stop or diminish as the section drains. Leave the faucet open during the winter unless the fixture’s instructions say otherwise; an open outlet gives residual water a place to escape as temperatures change.

If the faucet continues to run steadily, the interior shutoff may not be the correct valve, may not be closing, or may be passing water. Close the faucet temporarily and investigate rather than assuming the line is protected. A plumber may be needed if you cannot identify or operate the correct shutoff.
5. Protect the faucet and nearby piping
Once the faucet has been disconnected and drained, install an insulated outdoor faucet cover if the fixture is exposed to cold wind or prolonged freezing temperatures. Follow the cover’s installation instructions and make sure it fits without leaving a large gap.
Also look for exposed water lines, valves, and fittings in unheated areas such as garages, crawlspaces, attics, and exterior wall cavities. Pipe-insulation sleeves can reduce exposure to cold, but insulation does not repair a leak or guarantee that a pipe cannot freeze. Keep insulation dry and do not place materials near combustion sources or equipment that produces heat.
What changes with a frost-free faucet?
A frost-free, frost-proof, or freezeless wall faucet—also called a sillcock or hose bibb in many regions—is generally designed with its shutoff valve farther inside the heated part of the building. When installed correctly, the outer barrel can drain after the faucet is turned off.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat design reduces freeze risk, but it does not make the fixture immune to freezing. The key conditions are:
- The hose and attachments must be removed. A connected hose, timer, splitter, or nozzle can prevent the barrel from draining.
- The faucet must have the required downward pitch. Many frost-free wall faucets need to slope downward toward the outlet so water can drain. An incorrectly pitched installation can retain water.
- The fixture’s instructions control model-specific details. Vacuum-breaker arrangements and other components may have specific operating or winterizing instructions.
The safe rule is to remove all attachments from a frost-free faucet and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not assume that a label means the faucet never needs attention, and do not assume that every frost-free model requires exactly the same separate shutoff procedure.
If you are unsure whether your faucet is frost-free, look for the model information on the body or handle and compare it with the manufacturer’s documentation. Exterior appearance alone is not a reliable way to identify the internal design.
If there is no dedicated shutoff
A dedicated exterior-faucet shutoff is common but not universal. If you cannot find one, or if the faucet is supplied from a line that cannot be separately isolated:

- Insulate exposed supply piping, valves, and fittings in unheated areas using appropriate pipe insulation.
- Check the faucet and nearby plumbing during severe cold, especially if the installation is on an exterior wall or in an unheated garage.
This approach reduces exposure but cannot provide the same assurance as isolating and draining the faucet’s supply section. If the plumbing repeatedly freezes, a licensed plumber can assess whether a dedicated shutoff, better pipe routing, additional insulation, or a properly installed frost-proof replacement faucet is appropriate.
A replacement faucet is not a universal do-it-yourself swap. The correct length, connection type, wall thickness, slope, drainage arrangement, and local requirements all matter. Choose a replacement based on the existing installation and manufacturer specifications, not just the shape of the exterior handle.
Do not confuse faucet winterization with irrigation winterization
Opening the outdoor faucet does not winterize every system connected to the property. Treat these separately:
| Equipment | Why it needs separate attention | Typical next step |
|---|---|---|
| Hose-fed drip or soaker system | Water can remain in tubing, timers, filters, and fittings. | Disconnect, drain, and follow the system manufacturer’s instructions. |
| In-ground irrigation | Buried supply lines and zone components may hold water. | Use the system’s prescribed shutdown, blowout, or drain procedure; hire an irrigation professional when required. |
| Backflow preventer | Its chambers and valves can freeze even when the faucet is drained. | Drain or winterize it according to the device instructions and local water-provider requirements. |
| Rain barrel | Frozen water can damage the barrel, diverter, spigot, or connected hose. | Disconnect, empty, and store or protect components as directed by the manufacturer. |
| Pool or spa plumbing | It is part of a separate circulation and equipment system. | Follow the pool or spa winterization procedure rather than relying on the exterior faucet. |
Backflow-prevention requirements can depend on the local water provider, building department, and installation. Do not bypass, remove, or alter a backflow device merely to make winterization easier.
If the faucet may already be frozen
Reduced flow, no flow, frost around a fitting, or a faucet that behaves differently after a cold night may indicate freezing. Proceed cautiously:
- Do not use an open flame. Torches and other flames can ignite nearby materials, damage plumbing, or create a fire hazard.
- If you use a hair dryer, approved heating device, or heat lamp, keep it away from water, combustibles, and plastic materials, and do not leave it unattended.
- Open the faucet so pressure has an outlet, but do not force a stuck handle.
- Watch for leaks as the pipe thaws. A split pipe may not leak until ice melts.
- If a pipe breaks or water is escaping, shut off the home’s main water supply promptly and contact a plumber.
If the faucet is frozen inside an exterior wall or the suspected damage is behind finished surfaces, professional diagnosis is safer than applying intense heat from outside.

Renters should check the lease and notify the property manager before operating an unfamiliar shutoff or making changes to insulation, faucets, or backflow equipment. In a multi-unit building, the exterior faucet may serve more than one residence or may be controlled by building maintenance.
Homeowners should identify the dedicated shutoff before the first freeze, label it if its purpose is unclear, and note whether the outdoor faucet is conventional or frost-free. Doing this in mild weather is easier than searching for a hidden valve during an emergency.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I leave an outdoor faucet open during winter?
If you closed the dedicated shutoff and opened the faucet to drain the isolated pipe section, leaving a conventional faucet open can provide an outlet for residual water. Follow the fixture manufacturer’s instructions if they specify different handling.
Can an insulated faucet cover prevent a pipe from bursting?
A cover adds protection against cold air and wind, but it does not drain a water-filled conventional faucet or guarantee protection during prolonged freezing. Remove attachments and drain the isolated section whenever possible.
Do frost-free faucets need to be winterized?
They still need attention. Remove the hose and every attachment so the faucet can drain, confirm that the installation has the required downward slope, and follow the specific manufacturer’s instructions. A frost-free label is not immunity from freeze damage.
Should I shut off the main water to winterize an outdoor faucet?
Not as a routine step. Use the dedicated shutoff for that faucet when one exists. Shut off the main supply for a broader whole-house vacancy plan or if a pipe breaks and water must be stopped.

Remove and drain all attachments, install a fitted insulated cover, and insulate exposed nearby piping in unheated areas. If the faucet is vulnerable or repeatedly freezes, have a plumber locate the supply and evaluate a dedicated shutoff or other repair.
The Bottom Line
Before local freezing weather arrives, remove the hose and attachments, close the outdoor faucet’s dedicated shutoff if available, open the faucet to drain the isolated line, and protect the fixture with a properly fitted cover. Frost-free faucets still need their hoses removed, and irrigation or backflow equipment must be winterized separately.
