The Safe Way to Machine-Wash Sneakers Without Wrecking the Shoes or Washer

Most canvas, mesh, nylon, polyester, and some knit sneakers can be washed in a machine if you control agitation, water temperature, detergent, and drying. Leather, suede, dress shoes, cork footbeds, electronics, orthotics, and heat-sensitive insoles should stay out of the washer.

Yes, many shoes can go in the washing machine, but only if they are the right material and you treat the washer like a cleaning tool, not a cement mixer. Canvas sneakers, nylon trainers, polyester uppers, and many knit or mesh running shoes usually handle a cold gentle cycle well. Leather, suede, nubuck, dress shoes, cork footbeds, shoes with lights or electronics, and expensive collectible sneakers should not go in the washer.

The safe method is simple: check the care label, remove laces and insoles, brush off dry mud and grit, bag the shoes, add towels to cushion the drum, use a small amount of mild liquid detergent, run cold water on delicate or hand-wash with low spin, then air-dry for 24 to 48 hours. The two things that ruin shoes fastest are heat and aggressive agitation.

On our job sites, we treat footwear cleaning the same way we treat tool care. Knock off the heavy debris first, use the gentlest method that will do the job, and do not create a bigger maintenance problem downstream. A washer can clean dirty fabric shoes, but mud, gravel, heavy detergent, and bad drying habits can damage shoes, stress the machine, and clog laundry-room plumbing.

First Decision: Washer, Hand Wash, or Professional Cleaning?

Before you touch the washer dial, sort the shoes by material, construction, value, and condition. This 2-minute check prevents most of the damage homeowners call “bad luck.” It is not bad luck when suede goes through a spin cycle or when a glued dress shoe comes apart after hot water.

Use the washing machine for everyday fabric sneakers when the manufacturer allows it or the shoes are low-risk: canvas slip-ons, cloth tennis shoes, nylon trainers, polyester uppers, many mesh running shoes, and some wool shoes designed for machine washing. Some brands allow cold gentle machine washing for specific models, while others recommend hand washing only. When the shoe maker says no machine washing, assume there is a warranty and material risk.

Hand wash shoes when the upper is mixed-material, the shoe has specialty foam, glued trim, delicate graphics, reflective overlays, or a manufacturer recommendation against machine washing. Hand washing gives you better control around seams, midsoles, and decorative parts.

Hire a professional sneaker cleaner or cobbler for high-value sneakers, suede or leather, deep odor remediation, yellowed or stained midsoles, color correction, paint touchups, sole whitening, or restoration. Basic professional sneaker cleaning in the United States commonly runs about $23 to $30 per pair in 2026. Deeper cleaning and restoration often starts around $69 and can rise to $75 or more when deodorizing, suede work, color repair, pickup, or delivery is included.

  • Leather, suede, and nubuck: water saturation can stiffen, stain, shrink, or permanently change the nap.
  • Dress shoes and boots: many rely on shaped structure, leather soles, stacked heels, and adhesives that do not belong in a washer.
  • Cork footbeds: cork can swell, crack, crumble, or lose shape when soaked.
  • Memory-foam insoles and orthotics: foam can hold water for days, deform, and trap odor.
  • Shoes with lights, batteries, chips, or electronics: water and electronics do not mix.
  • Glued embellishments, rhinestones, patches, or delicate overlays: agitation can pull them off.
  • Collectible or expensive sneakers: the replacement cost usually outweighs the convenience of a wash cycle.
  • Heavily oil-soaked work shoes: petroleum residue does not belong in a household washer.

If the shoes are construction boots, leather work shoes, dress footwear, or expensive sneakers, stop and hand clean or send them out. A washing machine is best for soft fabric shoes, not structured footwear.

What It Costs to Wash Shoes at Home

For most households, the actual cost of a shoe wash is low. The larger cost is the potential damage if you wash the wrong shoe or run the wrong cycle. A do-it-yourself machine wash usually costs about $1 to $5 per pair when you already own the washer. That estimate includes water, electricity, detergent, and small disposable supplies.

Energy-efficient washer use matters, but it is not the biggest number in the project. ENERGY STAR certified full-size clothes washers use about 14 gallons of water per load, compared with about 20 gallons for a standard washer. Since you should wash only 1 to 2 pairs at a time, do not run shoes as a daily habit. Treat it as occasional maintenance.

Item or Service Typical 2026 US Cost When It Makes Sense
DIY machine wash $1-$5 per pair Everyday canvas, mesh, nylon, or polyester sneakers
Mesh shoe bag or delicates bag $6-$19 for basic bags; $15-$30 for larger structured bags Protects shoes and washer drum from direct impact
Soft brush or toothbrush $2-$10 Pre-cleaning soles, seams, and tread
Sneaker brush kit $10-$25 Better for regular sneaker care and midsole scrubbing
Sneaker cleaning solution kit $10-$25 basic; $25-$50+ premium Spot cleaning, hand washing, white midsoles, delicate uppers
Professional basic cleaning About $23-$30 per pair Good sneakers you do not want to risk in the washer
Professional deep cleaning or restoration Often starts around $69 and can exceed $75 Suede, leather, odor treatment, whitening, paint or color repair

A dedicated commercial shoe-washing machine is not a practical homeowner purchase. Machines in that category can run about $1,200 to $2,500 or more and are meant for cleaning businesses, not a residential laundry room.

Supplies You Need Before You Start

You do not need a shelf full of specialty products. The safest shoe-washing setup is basic and controlled:

  • Mesh shoe laundry bag or zippered delicates bag. A pillowcase tied shut works in a pinch.
  • Old towels to cushion the shoes, balance the load, and reduce banging in the washer.
  • Soft-bristle brush, old toothbrush, or sneaker brush for dry dirt and sole edges.
  • Toothpick or small plastic pick for pebbles stuck in tread. Work gently so you do not gouge the rubber.
  • Mild liquid laundry detergent. Use 1 to 2 teaspoons for shoes, not a full cap for a clothing load.
  • Baking soda for dry pre-deodorizing, used sparingly and shaken or vacuumed out before washing.
  • Microfiber cloth or sponge for spot cleaning and blotting moisture.

Avoid bleach, fabric softener, hot water, powdered detergent clumps, and heavy stain removers unless the shoe manufacturer specifically allows them. Too much detergent leaves residue, stiffens fabric, attracts soil, and can make odor worse by trapping grime in the fibers.

Step-by-Step: How to Wash Shoes in the Washing Machine

1. Read the Care Label and Look Up the Model

Look inside the tongue, under the insole, or on the brand’s care page. Some shoe makers approve machine washing for certain fabric or wool models. Others, including major athletic brands for many shoes, recommend hand washing instead. That conflict matters. If the brand says hand wash only, machine washing may affect the shoe’s appearance, structure, or warranty.

2. Remove Laces and Insoles

Take the laces out completely so water and detergent can reach the tongue and eyelet area. Put laces in a small mesh bag or hand wash them in a bowl with mild detergent. If they are badly stained or frayed, replacement laces usually cost less than the time spent trying to restore them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove insoles every time. Insoles slow drying, hold odor, and can deform when soaked. Memory-foam insoles and orthotics should be cleaned by hand according to their own instructions. For standard removable fabric insoles, wipe them with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then air-dry separately. Do not bury wet insoles back into damp shoes.

3. Dry-Brush Mud, Sand, and Grass Outside

Let wet mud dry enough to flake off, then brush it outside or over a trash can. Use a plastic pick or toothpick to loosen gravel from the tread. This step protects your laundry room as much as the shoes. Sand, clay, and grit can collect in the washer pump, hose, utility sink trap, or laundry standpipe. Construction crews, gardeners, and families with sports shoes should be especially strict here. The washer is not a debris separator.

4. Spot-Clean the Midsoles and Problem Areas

The washer is poor at removing embedded sidewall scuffs. White midsoles, rubber toe caps, and outsole edges usually need a brush first. Use a damp cloth, a soft brush, and a small amount of mild detergent or sneaker cleaner. Scrub the rubber and seams before the washer cycle. Do not reach straight for bleach or peroxide on colored shoes; harsh whitening can yellow material, fade dyes, and break down fibers.

5. Bag Each Shoe

Put each shoe in its own mesh bag if you have two bags. If not, place both shoes in one larger zippered bag or a tied pillowcase. The bag reduces direct impact against the drum and keeps laces, loose debris, or small parts from wandering into places they do not belong.

6. Add Towels for Balance

Wash 1 to 2 pairs at a time, not a pile of shoes. Add 2 to 4 old towels to cushion the load and help balance the drum. Do not use delicate bath towels you care about; shoe dye and soil can transfer. In a top-loader, avoid washing one heavy pair by itself because the load can go out of balance during spin. In a front-loader, towels also reduce the repeated thud of shoes hitting the drum.

7. Use Cold Water, Gentle Agitation, and Low Spin

Choose cold water and a delicate, hand-wash, or gentle cycle. Select low spin or no spin if your machine allows it. The goal is controlled movement and rinsing, not aggressive soil removal. Hot water and heavy-duty cycles can weaken glue, deform foam, stress stitching, shrink fabric, and damage synthetic overlays.

Use only 1 to 2 teaspoons of mild liquid detergent for a small shoe load. If you have a high-efficiency washer, use HE-compatible detergent. Do not use pods for this job because they are harder to dose down for a small load.

How to Dry Shoes Without Warping Them

Drying is where many shoes get ruined. Do not put washed shoes in the dryer unless the manufacturer specifically says it is safe. Dryer heat can warp midsoles, weaken adhesives, shrink fabric, deform synthetic components, and leave shoes misshapen. Radiators, heat vents, hair dryers, and direct summer sun can cause the same problems.

After the wash cycle, remove the shoes from the bag immediately. Open the tongues wide. Blot extra water with a microfiber cloth. Stuff each shoe with white paper towels, white packing paper, or clean white cloth to hold shape and absorb moisture. Avoid newspaper because ink can transfer to damp fabric.

Set the shoes in a room with moving air. A box fan, ceiling fan, or dehumidifier helps far more than heat. Expect 24 to 48 hours for most fabric sneakers. Thick tongues, padded collars, knit uppers, and damp weather can push drying closer to 72 hours. Replace wet paper after the first 2 to 4 hours if the shoes are saturated.

Do not reinstall laces and insoles until everything is fully dry. If you lace shoes while the tongue and footbed are still damp, you trap moisture where mildew odor starts. Shoes should feel dry inside the toe box, under the tongue, and around the heel collar before you wear them.

Odor Control Is Different From Dirt Removal

A washer can remove surface dirt, but repeated washing is not the best answer for odor. Odor usually comes from moisture, bacteria, sweat salts, and insoles that never fully dry. If shoes smell bad two days after washing, the issue is not just dirt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by removing the insoles and drying everything fully between wears. Use baking soda only on dry shoes or dry insoles: sprinkle lightly, let it sit overnight, then shake or vacuum it out before wearing or washing. For persistent odor, use an enzyme deodorizer made for footwear and follow the label. Enzyme products need contact time; a quick spray before wearing usually does little.

Rotate shoes when possible. A pair worn every day may never dry through the midsole and lining. For work shoes, gym shoes, and kids’ sports shoes, a simple boot dryer or fan area near the laundry room can be more useful than another wash cycle.

Washer and Laundry-Room Protection

From a contractor’s standpoint, the laundry room matters. Shoes carry the kind of debris that can make a washer or drain work harder: sand, pea gravel, clay, mulch, grass, and small stones. Always remove debris before the wash. If the shoes came from a job site, garden, ball field, or muddy trail, brush them outside first and wipe the outsole edges with a damp rag.

Use a bag and towels every time. Loose shoes bang against the drum, stress the washer, and can make the machine walk or shut down on imbalance. If your washer starts thumping hard during spin, pause the cycle and redistribute the towels. Do not let the machine hammer through the cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the washer gasket after washing shoes, especially on front-load machines. Wipe out grit, hair, and rubber crumbs. If your washer has a cleanable drain pump filter, inspect it according to the manufacturer’s instructions after especially dirty loads. Do not force parts open if you do not know the machine’s design; use the manual.

For plumbing, the rule is common sense: solids do not belong in drains. Laundry standpipes and utility sinks are designed for wastewater, not mud disposal. If you regularly wash workwear, sports gear, or muddy shoes, keeping a brush, boot tray, and trash can near the laundry entrance prevents most of the problem.

Material-by-Material Cleaning Guide

Canvas Shoes

Canvas is one of the best candidates for machine washing. Remove laces and insoles, pre-brush the soles, use cold gentle wash, and air-dry. White canvas may still need spot cleaning around toe creases and sole edges.

Mesh and Knit Running Shoes

Many mesh and knit running shoes can be washed, but be careful with specialty foams, glued overlays, and performance plates. Use low spin and avoid heat. Some manufacturers allow cold delicate washing for specific models, while others recommend hand washing. When in doubt, hand wash.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Nylon and Polyester Trainers

These are generally washer-friendly if they do not include delicate overlays or leather trim. Use a bag, towels, mild detergent, and cold water. Avoid high spin because it can crease heel counters and stress seams.

Wool Shoes

Some wool shoes are designed for machine washing, but not all wool footwear is the same. Use cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener, and air-dry only. Check the brand instructions first.

Leather, Suede, Nubuck, and Dress Shoes

Do not machine wash these. Use a material-specific cleaner, suede brush, conditioner, or professional service. Once leather or suede is waterlogged and misshapen, restoration can cost more than basic cleaning would have.

Common Mistakes That Damage Shoes

The most common mistakes are also the easiest to avoid. Do not use hot water, a heavy-duty cycle, or high spin. Do not leave insoles inside. Do not use a full cap of detergent. Do not put shoes loose in the drum. Do not send mud, gravel, and grass into the washer. Do not use the dryer. Do not reassemble or wear shoes while they are still damp inside.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bleach deserves a separate warning. It can work on certain white materials when used correctly, but it is risky on mixed-material sneakers. It may yellow fabric, fade logos, damage stitching, or leave blotchy patches. If you want white soles brighter, start with a brush and sneaker cleaner on the rubber sidewall before the washer. For valuable white sneakers, professional sole whitening is often safer than home chemistry.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY machine washing makes sense for everyday shoes that are dirty but not valuable: kids’ canvas sneakers, gym shoes, cloth slip-ons, yard sneakers, and washable running shoes. If replacement cost is low and the material is washer-safe, the $1 to $5 home wash is practical.

Hand washing is the middle ground. Use it for shoes with mixed materials, light leather accents, delicate overlays, or a brand recommendation against machine washing. A $10 to $25 sneaker cleaning kit can handle many shoes without the risk of full saturation.

Professional cleaning is worth considering when the shoes cost $150, $250, or more, or when the problem is beyond dirt. Suede cleaning, leather conditioning, deep deodorizing, color correction, paint touchups, and sole restoration take materials and judgment. Paying $30 for a basic clean or $69 to $75+ for restoration can be reasonable if the alternative is replacing an expensive pair.

There is no permit issue for washing shoes at home, but there is a safety and maintenance issue: keep solids out of drains, keep electrical footwear out of water, and do not overload the washer. If the shoes are contaminated with solvents, fuel, concrete slurry, pesticides, or heavy oil, do not wash them in a household machine. Follow the product safety guidance for that contaminant and keep it out of domestic plumbing.

The Best Routine for Long-Term Shoe Care

The best shoe-cleaning routine is lighter and more frequent than most people expect. Brush off dry dirt after muddy use. Wipe midsoles before stains set. Pull insoles periodically so they can dry. Store shoes with airflow, not sealed in a damp gym bag or plastic bin. Use a boot tray near the door to keep grit out of the house and away from the laundry drain.

Machine washing should be occasional, not weekly. Even a gentle cycle is still water saturation and mechanical movement. For shoes you care about, alternate between brushing, spot cleaning, deodorizing, and full washing only when needed.

If you remember one rule, make it this: cold water, low agitation, low spin, and air drying. That combination gives washable shoes the best chance of coming out clean without losing shape, loosening glue, or beating up the washer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can all shoes go in the washing machine?

No. Machine washing is mainly for washable fabric shoes such as canvas, nylon, polyester, mesh, and some knit or wool sneakers. Always check the care label or manufacturer guidance first.

What shoes should never be machine-washed?

Do not machine-wash leather, suede, nubuck, dress shoes, cork footbeds, memory-foam insoles, orthotics, shoes with glued decorations, or shoes with lights, batteries, or electronics.

Should I remove laces and insoles before washing shoes?

Yes. Remove laces so the tongue and eyelet areas clean properly, and remove insoles so they do not stay waterlogged. Wash or wipe laces and insoles separately, then air-dry everything fully.

What washer cycle and water temperature should I use for shoes?

Use cold water on a delicate, hand-wash, or gentle cycle with low spin or no spin when available. Add towels for balance and use only 1 to 2 teaspoons of mild liquid detergent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can shoes go in the dryer after washing?

Usually no. Dryer heat can warp midsoles, weaken adhesives, shrink fabric, and deform synthetic parts. Air-dry shoes for 24 to 48 hours with airflow from a fan or dehumidifier.

Is professional sneaker cleaning worth it?

It can be. Basic professional sneaker cleaning often costs about $23 to $30 per pair, while deeper restoration commonly starts around $69. It makes sense for expensive sneakers, suede, leather, deep odor, whitening, or color repair.
