On a wood lathe, scrapers shape and refine a turning, while parting tools cut grooves, tenons, diameter references and separations. They are distinct tools with different edge geometry and handling. The instructions below cover woodturning—not cabinet or card scrapers used on flat wood, or paint scrapers.
What each tool does
| Tool | Typical jobs | Profiles or sections |
|---|---|---|
| Woodturning scraper | Shaping spindle beads and hollowing end-grain vessels | Square-nose, round-nose and beading profiles |
| Parting tool | Cutting grooves and tenons, establishing a diameter reference, and separating a turning | Flat or diamond section; available in different widths |
WOOD Magazine’s 2019 guide describes these tools for woodturning operations. It recommends using a parting tool where the grain runs parallel to the lathe axis.
How to use a woodturning scraper
Prepare the edge for its profile
WOOD Magazine describes sharpening square- and round-nose scrapers on a bench grinder. For a beading scraper, it describes honing flat across the top on a bench stone. Keep the edge suited to the scraper’s profile rather than applying one sharpening method to every shape.
Make a spindle scraper cut
- Set the tool rest parallel to the lathe axis and slightly above the workpiece centerline, as in the guide’s spindle procedure.
- Rest the scraper on the tool rest with its handle higher than the tip.
- Lower the handle smoothly to bring the tip into a shallow cut. Do not let the handle drop below the tip.
Scraper bevels do not support wood fibers in the same way as a gouge or skew bevel, so spindle scraping can cause tear-out. With a beading scraper, cutting all the way to full depth is especially likely to tear the wood. Leave a small flat at the top of the bead and sand it away later, as WOOD Magazine advises.

Hollow an end-grain vessel
For the end-grain hollowing operation in its guide, WOOD Magazine positions the rest across the work, slightly above center. Keep the scraper supported on the rest and move from the center toward the rim. The guide also describes “shear scraping” by tilting the tool 45 degrees on the rest. These are operation-specific instructions; follow your lathe and tool maker’s guidance for your setup.
Choose a parting tool for the cut
| Parting-tool type | When it may suit | Trade-off described by WOOD Magazine |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 1/8-inch flat blade | A general-purpose choice for many turners | The guide presents it as suitable for most turners. |
| Wider flat blade | Making tenons | More difficult to control in deep cuts. |
| Ultrathin blade | Parting off work such as a box lid | Minimizes grain interruption. |
| Diamond-section blade | Deep cuts where binding is a concern | Binds less in deep cuts, according to the guide. |
Choose by the job and cut depth, not width alone. A wider blade can suit a tenon but may be harder to control in a deep cut; an ultrathin blade is useful when minimizing the kerf matters.

- Used to cut wood at a blunt angle. Scrapers will not produce a finish that is as good as a gouge, but are useful in many situations where cutting with a gouge would be difficult or a fine finish is not required

Sharpen a parting tool
WOOD Magazine gives a total bevel angle of 45–80 degrees at the tip. Within that range, a smaller angle cuts more aggressively; a larger angle stays sharp longer. The guide describes grinding a flat blade with a side-to-side motion. On a diamond-section tool, the bevels should meet at the blade’s widest part.
Keep this advice separate from scraper burr angles used for other kinds of scraping. The U.S. Navy’s 2014 NAVEDTRA 14043A training manual specifies a 5-degree burr for fine finishing and a 10-degree burr for removing paint and lacquer. Those are scraper instructions for the manual’s context, not parting-tool bevel angles for lathe turning.

- Blades are made from M2 High Speed Steel
- Larger Scraper: 19" overall length with 6" blade and 13" handle; Blade is 1" wide and 3/8" thick
- Smaller Scraper: 16" overall length with 6" blade and 10" handle; Blade is 3/4" wide and 5/16" thick
- Designed for blending the parallel side wall and the curved bottom of vessels and boxes together; Ideal for deep hollowing and making final cuts inside bowls; Also excellent for undercutting the rim of small bowls
Set up and use a parting tool
- Position the tool rest parallel to the workpiece and slightly below its centerline, following the setup in WOOD Magazine’s guide.
- Set the blade on edge on the rest, at a right angle to the workpiece.
- Viewed from the tailstock, touch the work at about the 10:30 position.
- Raise the handle so the tip travels on an arc toward the center of the workpiece.
- Withdraw the tool straight back. For a deep kerf, widening the cut can reduce friction.
These steps describe the guide’s technique, not a universal lathe procedure. Use the instructions for your machine and tool when their setup differs.

For scraper work outside the specific lathe cuts above, the Navy manual describes smoothing a filed edge for finish work and drawing a burr with a burnisher or screwdriver. It advises working with the grain to help prevent gouging; if a scraper makes dust rather than shavings, it needs sharpening.

The Woodworking Group’s general guide to scraping tools notes that scraper edges can heat up during long passes. Pause if heat may contribute to a slip, keep thumbs behind the cutting edge, and store sharp cards with their edges protected. This is general woodworking advice, not a substitute for lathe-specific safety instructions.
