For safer winter walkways, shovel first, choose an ice melt suited to the temperature and surface, spread only a thin, even layer as directed on the label, then remove loosened slush. More product is not automatically more effective—and excess can harm concrete, plants, metal, pets, and waterways.

How to apply ice melt

  1. Clear snow and loose ice. Shovel or push away as much as practical before spreading deicer. Preventing ice from bonding is easier than melting a thick layer; University of Maryland Extension says ice-melting products work best when spread thinly and evenly before ice forms. Maryland Extension’s application guidance explains the approach.
  2. Check the product label and outdoor conditions. Confirm that the product’s stated working range includes the temperature and that it is appropriate for the surface. Temperature figures are approximate comparisons, not guarantees for every formulation.
  3. Apply a small, even amount. Follow the manufacturer’s directions. Maryland Extension notes that less than the recommended amount may be sufficient if coverage remains thin and even. Poison Control cautions that more is not better: the recommended amount is intended to work while limiting damage.
  4. Remove loosened slush and excess. Ice melt lowers water’s freezing point and helps form slush that can be shoveled or pushed away. Clear excess product rather than leaving it to be tracked indoors or washed toward plants and drains.

Which ice melt works in very cold temperatures?

Ingredients differ in their approximate working limits, and published reference values do not always agree. The table compares University of Maryland Extension’s 2024 figures; use the package’s range for the specific product and conditions rather than treating these figures as a guarantee.

Ingredient Approximate minimum in Maryland Extension’s 2024 table Relative speed in that table Noted considerations
Magnesium chloride −13°F Very fast Moderate plant harm is indicated; avoid excess and follow the label.
Calcium chloride −22°F Fast Potential concrete, metal, and plant damage; the source especially cautions about newly poured concrete.
Sodium chloride (rock salt) 18°F Moderate Potential concrete, metal, and plant damage; particularly damaging to newly poured concrete.
Potassium chloride 25°F Slow Listed as acceptable on old concrete, with moderate plant harm.

Kansas State University’s January 2025 comparison gives different approximate values: calcium chloride to −25°F, magnesium chloride to 5°F, potassium chloride to 20°F, and sodium chloride at 12°F or warmer. The difference underscores that temperature limits vary by source and product. Check the actual package instead of relying on a generic ingredient threshold. How to choose for concrete, masonry, plants, and runoff

  • Concrete: Newly poured concrete warrants particular caution. Maryland Extension flags sodium and calcium chloride as damaging to concrete and says not to apply either to brick or stone. Consider the surface and its age, read the product label, and avoid overapplication.
  • Metal: Some ingredients can contribute to metal damage or corrosion. Avoid unnecessary spread near metal and follow the product’s surface warnings.
  • Plants and waterways: Excess deicer can injure plants and contribute to polluted runoff. Apply only what is needed and clear leftover granules and slush where practical.
  • Pets and children: Ice-melt products can irritate pets and children. Keep them away during application, follow label directions, and avoid leaving excess where it can be tracked or contacted. Poison Control advises contacting a veterinarian promptly if a pet develops drooling, vomiting, seizures, or other symptoms after exposure. Read Poison Control’s exposure guidance.

No ingredient should be treated as a blanket “pet-safe,” “plant-safe,” or “concrete-safe” guarantee. Risk depends on the formulation, the surface, the amount used, and exposure.

When melting is not the right approach

If conditions fall outside the product’s working range, sand can add traction but does not melt ice. Maryland Extension discusses mixing deicer with wet sand for traction. Mechanical clearing remains useful: shovel snow and loose ice first, and remove slush after it loosens rather than relying on a heavier application.

Should you use fertilizer to melt ice?

Do not use lawn fertilizer as a deicer. Maryland Extension says fertilizer use to melt ice and snow is prohibited by Maryland’s Lawn Fertilizer Law because nitrogen and phosphorus can harm local waterways. That is a Maryland-specific legal statement; check local rules elsewhere.

What the Safer Choice label means for ice melt

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it will no longer certify ice-melt products under Safer Choice. Manufacturers have through February 2027 to stop using the label on newly manufactured products. The label is not a guarantee of zero risk, and the transition means it may not remain on all products. Follow the directions on the product itself. See the EPA’s Safer Choice FAQ.
