Use washable cloth for routine wiping and drying when it suits the task; keep paper towels for messes where disposable absorbency or hygiene is useful. Don’t put used paper towels in paper recycling, and compost them only if your local program accepts them. That practical approach reduces disposable use without assuming cloth is automatically better in every situation.
Why paper towels are a waste-reduction target
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimated that the combined category of tissue paper and towels generated 3.79 million U.S. short tons of municipal solid waste in 2018, or 1.3% of total U.S. municipal solid waste. The category includes facial and sanitary tissues and table napkins as well as towels; it is not a paper-towels-only figure. EPA’s product-specific data also notes that detailed waste-management data for tissue paper and towels are available only through 2005.
How to reduce paper-towel use at home
Use cloth for repeatable, low-risk tasks
Keep washable cloth towels where they are convenient for drying hands, wiping counters, or cleaning up ordinary spills. Reuse a cloth while it is still suitable for the task, then launder it according to your normal household routine. An EPA-hosted historical comparison shows why a blanket environmental ranking is not justified: results depend on how many times a cloth is used and the laundry assumptions, among other factors. It is not a current product-by-product verdict.
Keep disposable towels for tasks that call for them
Paper towels remain useful when a mess is unpleasant to handle with a reusable cloth, when a disposable absorbent material is needed, or when you want to avoid carrying a contaminated cloth into another task. Use only what is needed rather than pulling extra sheets by habit. This is a practical waste-reduction approach, not a quantified estimate of savings.

Store washable cloths near the places where you usually reach for a roll. A small supply of reusable cotton kitchen towels or other washable cloth towels can replace some routine uses; the environmental comparison depends on reuse and laundering, not just the material name.
Can paper towels be recycled?
Generally, don’t place paper towels in curbside paper recycling. EPA says it did not identify significant recycling recovery for tissue products, although some composting exists. The much-cited 68.2% recycling rate for paper and paperboard in 2018—46.0 million tons—is for that broad material category, not for paper towels. See EPA’s national overview for the broader figures.

Can used paper towels be composted?
Sometimes. Acceptance depends on the local compost program and what the towel was used for. Seattle Public Utilities lists food-soiled paper towels for composting in its home sorting guidance. Palo Alto’s Zero Waste FAQ also discusses soiled paper towels in composting advice, with routes depending on the material and local collection.
Check your municipality or organics service’s current rules before adding towels to a bin. Do not assume that towels used with chemical cleaners, solvents, or other contaminants are compostable; ask the local operator how to handle them. If your local program does not accept paper towels, follow its disposal guidance rather than putting them in recycling.

Choosing between paper towels and cloth
There is no established current, comprehensive life-cycle ranking here that proves today’s reusable cloth towels are always better than today’s paper towels. For a sensible household choice, consider the task, how many times a cloth will be reused, how it will be laundered, and the waste route available locally. Replacing suitable one-time uses with repeated cloth use can cut disposable consumption, but the overall impact depends on those conditions.
