Tests of seven lever-actuated wire connectors found through an online search are useful as a warning about unverified products, not as proof that any connector is safe for permanent wiring. Hackaday’s 2022 account of GreatScott!’s comparison says the tested products performed adequately for hobby use and brief test connections, while independent certification marks were the key confidence signal for house-wiring use. The video’s reported bench tests cannot establish long-term reliability or whether a splice is permitted to be concealed in a particular jurisdiction.
What the seven-connector comparison tested
Hackaday writer Maya Posch reported on April 25, 2022, that GreatScott! selected seven lever-actuated connectors found through an online search for “clamp lever terminal.” The video subjected them to high-current, fire, and mechanical-strength tests. Hackaday’s account does not provide a complete model-by-model result table or the full test methods, load conditions, and measurements, so its summary should not be read as a detailed performance ranking.
According to Hackaday’s summary, all seven were adequate for hobby use and brief test connections. The tester expressed confidence for house-wiring use only in connectors bearing independent certification marks, such as VDE. That is a reported conclusion from a comparison video—not a universal certification, code ruling, or assurance about every product carrying a mark. Read Hackaday’s account of the comparison.
Why a bench test does not settle suitability for building wiring
Short tests answer a limited question
Current, heat or fire, and pull tests can reveal how samples behave under the particular conditions tested. They do not, by themselves, show how a connector will perform after years of service. The reported comparison was not a controlled long-term aging study, a statistically representative sample, or a measurement of service life.

Ratings and appearance are not enough
A voltage figure printed on a listing does not establish long-term suitability. The relevant evidence is specific to the exact connector model: its independently verified certification and scope, supported conductor types and sizes, conductor count, and stated electrical ratings. Similar appearance—or a lever mechanism that resembles a known brand—does not mean two products share specifications or approvals.
The tested products were not a complete market survey
The available account does not identify every tested brand and model or give equivalent specifications for all seven. Hackaday mentioned German brand ViD as an example it regarded at the time as having a certification mark and potentially costing less than WAGO. That 2022 account does not establish ViD’s current certification status, price, or availability; verify the exact model and current documentation before relying on it.

How to choose a lever connector for a real installation
For a building project, evaluate documentation for the exact item you intend to use rather than extrapolating from a video test or a brand resemblance:
- Certification: Check for an independent certification mark and confirm that it applies to the exact model and intended use.
- Conductor compatibility: Verify the permitted solid, stranded, or fine-stranded conductors, wire sizes, and number of conductors for that model.
- Electrical ratings: Use the manufacturer’s stated ratings for the exact variant; do not infer them from a similar connector.
- Test scope: Treat short current, heat/fire, and pull tests as limited evidence, not as proof of aging performance or service life.
- Installation rules: Confirm the applicable local requirements for the application, enclosure, and access. The comparison account does not determine whether a splice may be concealed in a wall.
WAGO’s official 221 Series product-family page describes lever-operated splicing connectors for solid, stranded, and fine-stranded conductors. It lists variants with different conductor sizes and counts, as well as compatible mounting carriers and junction boxes. Check the documentation for the particular variant rather than treating those family-level descriptions as specifications for every 221 connector.

Using and mounting WAGO 221 connectors
WAGO describes the basic operation this way: “Pull the lever up, insert a conductor and push the lever back down – done!” This is the manufacturer’s description of use, not a safety guarantee. Follow the instructions and ratings for the exact connector and installation.
Where organization or securing the connectors is relevant, WAGO lists 221 mounting carriers and a junction-box accessory for the product family. They are available accessories, not a requirement established for every installation by the sources cited here.
