How to Use Baking Soda for Oil Stains—and When Not to Use It

Baking soda can help absorb a fresh grease spot, and a county-recommended method uses it with dish soap to pretreat an oil stain on clothing. That recipe is not established as a reliable treatment for concrete: for a driveway or masonry surface, use guidance made for concrete and oil stains instead.

Use baking soda and dish soap on a clothing stain

Anoka County recommends combining dish soap and baking soda as a clothing pretreatment. Check the garment’s care label first and test the treatment on an inconspicuous area. The instructions are a practical method, not a guarantee for every fabric, oil, or stain age.

  1. Lay the garment flat with the stained area facing up.
  2. Apply several drops of dish soap to the stain. With a wet toothbrush, gently work the soap into the spot.
  3. Cover the area with baking soda and brush it into the stain until the spot has a paste-like covering.
  4. Leave it for one hour.
  5. Rinse out all the baking soda, then launder the garment according to its care label.
  6. Air dry the garment. Anoka County says to repeat the process if needed; inspect the result before using heat, which may be unsuitable for a stain that remains.

Anoka County’s clothing stain instructions also describe soaking in warm water with oxygen bleach. Treat that as an optional step only if the garment label and the bleach product’s directions allow it.

Why baking soda may help—and what it cannot promise

Baking soda can act as an absorbent aid: Klickitat County advises covering a grease spot with baking soda or cornmeal, letting it absorb grease, then brushing it off. This supports trying it on a fresh spot, but does not establish a success rate or show that it will remove set-in oil from every fabric.

For light grease and oil stains on clothing, the American Cleaning Institute’s stain guide offers another pretreatment route: use prewash stain remover, liquid laundry detergent, or liquid detergent booster, then wash at the hottest temperature safe for the fabric. For heavy stains, it describes placing the stained side down on paper towels, applying cleaning fluid to the back, changing the towels frequently, letting the area dry, then rinsing and laundering. Follow the garment and product labels when choosing between approaches; the cited guidance does not establish that one method outperforms the other.

For concrete, use concrete-specific oil-stain guidance

A clothing pretreatment is not a proven driveway-cleaning recipe. The University of Georgia Extension’s oil-stain guidance addresses concrete by focusing on absorbing free-standing grease and other surface-specific approaches. The Concrete Masonry & Hardscapes Association notes that cleaning oil and grease from masonry may take multiple applications and emphasizes prewetting the surface and using low pressure when chemical agents are used. Neither source establishes that baking soda alone reliably removes deep or old concrete stains. Choose a method intended for the particular concrete or masonry surface and follow its product directions.

Surfaces where baking soda is a poor choice

Do not use baking soda on aluminum: Oregon Metro warns it can pit the surface. Also, baking soda and washing soda are different substances. Oregon Metro describes baking soda as an odor absorber and mild abrasive, while its household cleaner guidance uses washing soda for grease removal. Do not substitute one for the other based on the name alone. See Oregon Metro’s safer-cleaner guidance and its safe cleaning recipes.
