Yes—an old Android phone can work as a basic baby monitor if it has a healthy battery, working camera and microphone, compatible software, reliable Wi-Fi, and safe continuous power. The usual setup uses the old phone as the camera and a newer phone, tablet, or computer as the viewer.
It is a convenience monitor, not a medical, breathing, suffocation, or emergency-detection device. Test it thoroughly before relying on it, and never place the phone, charger, or cable inside or within reach of a crib or bassinet.

What you need
- An old Android phone with a working rear camera, microphone, speaker, Wi-Fi, and charging port.
- A second phone, tablet, or compatible computer for viewing.
- Reliable Wi-Fi where the camera phone will be placed.
- A known-good charger and cable.
- A stable shelf, stand, or properly secured wall mount.
- A monitoring app installed from Google Play.
The phone must support the current version of the chosen app. Opening the Play Store does not guarantee compatibility. Check the app’s live Google Play listing for its current Android requirements.
Check whether the old phone is suitable
Do not reuse the phone if its battery is swollen, the casing is cracked, it develops a hot spot, smells of chemicals, produces smoke, or becomes unusually hot while charging. Retire and properly recycle a damaged phone instead.

- Crystal Clear Audio with DECT 6.0 Technology: No static, no white noise, no interference - DECT 6.0 digital transmission means you only ever hear your baby. Unlike analog monitors that produce constant background hissing, the DM111 is completely silent until your baby makes a sound. The moment they stir, you hear it clearly. Encrypted FHSS channel shared exclusively between baby unit and parent unit - no internet, no cloud, no account. Cannot be hacked
- Portable Design with Long Battery Life: 8-hour rechargeable battery and belt clip keep you connected with both hands free. The parent unit attaches to your belt, waistband, or pocket and moves with you through the house, yard, or garage. The 1,000ft range maintains a strong connection wherever you go. AAA batteries (included) serve as backup when you can't charge
- Visual Sound Indicator with Mute Function: Mute the speaker - 5 LED lights still show exactly how loud the nursery is. Check the sound indicator from across the bed without picking up the unit or waking your partner. One light means quiet, five means crying. When your attention is needed, the parent unit emits an alert tone - low battery, out of range, or sound activity above your set threshold
- Simple Setup and Operation: Plug in, power on, connected in 60 seconds - no app, no WiFi, no account, no pairing screens. Connect both units to power and they link automatically. That's the entire setup. Volume is controlled with a single up/down button on the parent unit
- Versatile Use for Multiple Situations: Reliable audio monitoring without complexity for new parents, travel, and grandparents. The DM111 is the monitor you hand to a grandparent without explaining anything, pack in a bag for a trip, or set up as a secondary unit in a second room. Trusted by US families for over 30 years
Before installation, test the camera in the standard Camera app, record audio, connect to your home Wi-Fi, and leave the phone charging for a while. Confirm that the cable and charging port do not disconnect when the phone is moved slightly. Free storage for the app and recordings, install available Android and Google Play system updates, and remove unnecessary apps.
If the phone no longer receives security updates, consider the risk before placing it on your home network. A factory reset, minimal installation, strong account security, and an isolated guest network can reduce exposure, but cannot make unsupported software fully current.

Choose video, audio, or both
Video monitoring
Video is useful when you want to check whether the baby is awake or whether the sleep area is visible. It uses more bandwidth and power, depends heavily on lighting and camera placement, and exposes more visual information through the app or its service.
Audio-only monitoring
Audio uses less bandwidth and may reduce privacy exposure. It can be enough when the main goal is hearing crying, but it cannot show the child’s position or surroundings. Review permissions individually: some apps may still request camera access even when audio is your main use.
Video with alerts
Motion and sound alerts are supplementary conveniences, not guaranteed alarms. Sound or baby-cry detection can misclassify noise, coughing, pets, silence, or other sounds. AlfredCamera currently describes baby-cry detection as a beta feature on paid plans; it should not be treated as medically reliable.

AlfredCamera’s documented setup is specifically designed for using two devices: the old phone becomes the Camera and the newer phone becomes the Viewer. The service supports live viewing, motion and sound-related alerts, two-way audio, event recording, and low-light features, although features and limits vary by plan.

For U.S. pricing displayed on Alfred’s plans information on August 18, 2026, the free tier was listed at $0. Premium Standard was shown at $5.99 monthly or $35.99 per year when billed annually, while Premium Plus was displayed with an annual-billing equivalent of $3.99 per month. These pages and app-store listings are not perfectly consistent, so confirm the final price in the app before subscribing. Subscriptions normally renew unless canceled through the relevant billing platform. See Alfred’s plans page and its 2026 pricing notice.
Grant Android permissions
On the camera phone, open Settings → Apps → [monitoring app] → Permissions. Allow camera and microphone access. Review notification permission separately if you want alerts. On supported Android versions, permissions can also be reviewed through Settings → Security & privacy → Privacy → Permission manager.
Android also provides system-wide camera and microphone controls. If either control is disabled, the app may appear installed but cannot monitor correctly. During setup, watch for Android’s green camera or microphone privacy indicator when the app is actively using those sensors. Google’s general guidance is available through its Android permissions documentation.

Stop Android from closing the monitor
Background restrictions are one of the most common reasons an old-phone monitor fails after the screen turns off. Menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, but review these settings on the camera phone:
- Set the monitoring app’s battery usage to Unrestricted, or disable battery optimization for it.
- Allow background activity and notifications.
- Turn off automatic “pause app activity if unused” behavior for the app if it appears.
- Disable manufacturer-specific task killing, auto-cleaning, or memory optimization.
- Check Do Not Disturb and allow monitor alerts if they must bypass it.
- Keep the app in the foreground if it requires the screen to remain active.
- Do not use the camera phone for other tasks while it is monitoring.
Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, Huawei, and other manufacturers may place these controls in different menus. After changing them, lock the screen and verify that the stream remains active.
Place the phone safely
- Keep the phone outside the crib, bassinet, and the child’s reach.
- Use a stable shelf or properly secured stand or wall mount; never use a loose improvised mount over the crib.
- Route the charging cable away from the sleep area so it cannot form a loop or become a strangulation or entanglement hazard.
- Keep the phone away from blankets, pillows, curtains, heaters, and other heat-trapping materials.
- Aim from above or beside the sleep area. Do not create a fall or entanglement risk by forcing the phone through crib bars.
- Keep the flash and bright screen from shining into the baby’s eyes.
Software cannot make an unsafe phone, charger, mount, or cable safe. Inspect the physical installation every time the setup is moved.
Manage power and heat
Continuous video streaming while charging can generate heat. Place the phone on a hard, ventilated surface, remove a heat-trapping case, and do not cover it with cloth or place it under bedding. Use a known-good charger and cable with the correct connector; avoid damaged, loose, or unusually hot accessories.

If it supports screen-off operation, test that mode before bedtime. During the first long session, check the phone periodically. If it becomes unusually hot, stop the stream and disconnect power until the cause is understood. A smart plug may automate power cycling, but it is not a substitute for a healthy battery or reliable monitor.

Improve Wi-Fi and reconnection reliability
Place the camera phone where its Wi-Fi signal is strong, not merely where the picture looks best. Test the following before relying on it:
- View the stream from another room.
- Use the viewer on cellular data if remote viewing is required.
- Briefly turn the camera phone’s Wi-Fi off and on, then check recovery.
- Restart both phones.
- Restart the router and confirm that the camera returns online.
- Close the viewer app and verify whether alerts still arrive.
- Check whether the app gives a clear offline warning.
Being connected to home Wi-Fi does not automatically mean the camera is reachable from anywhere. Remote viewing depends on the app’s account, service architecture, internet access, network conditions, and service availability.
Night monitoring limitations
An old phone may produce a dark, noisy, or unusable image at night. A dim, indirect night-light may help if it is safe and acceptable. An app’s low-light filter can improve the appearance of an image, but software enhancement does not create infrared illumination.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not use the phone’s flash or a bright screen near a sleeping child. If true infrared night vision is essential, a dedicated camera may be a better choice. Alfred positions its dedicated hardware as adding infrared night vision, while the phone app remains limited by the old phone’s camera hardware. See Alfred’s baby-monitor information.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Secure the account and protect privacy
- Use a strong, unique monitoring-account password.
- Enable two-factor authentication if the service offers it.
- Do not casually share the viewer account.
- Factory-reset a phone that previously belonged to someone else.
- Install updates that remain available and avoid modified or “premium unlocked” APKs.
- Review the app’s Google Play Data safety information and privacy policy.
- Delete saved recordings and cloud events periodically.
- Consider whether cloud recording is necessary; live viewing without stored clips exposes less historical footage.
- Avoid using public Wi-Fi for the camera phone.
- Turn off camera and microphone access when the phone is no longer being used as a monitor.
Google explains Android’s camera and microphone controls and provides general privacy guidance through its Android privacy resources. Alfred’s Google Play disclosure currently indicates possible collection of personal, financial, device, and other data; review the live listing because developer-provided disclosures can change. A vendor’s security or encryption claim is not the same as a genuinely local-only system.

Prevent two-way audio feedback
Keep the viewer phone and camera phone in different rooms during normal use. Before activating two-way talk, lower the viewer volume and test at low volume. Devices placed beside each other can create loud feedback. Two-way talk may also have delay or clipping, so it is not an emergency intercom.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | Likely causes | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No camera or microphone | Permission denied, global sensor control disabled, another app using the sensor, or unsupported software | Open Settings → Apps → app → Permissions; enable camera and microphone, check Android’s global controls, restart the app and phone, and test the native Camera and Recorder apps. |
| Goes offline when the screen turns off | Battery optimization, background limits, or manufacturer task killing | Set battery usage to Unrestricted, allow background activity, disable auto-cleaning, and test with the screen on if screen-off monitoring is unsupported. |
| Alerts do not arrive | Notifications disabled, Do Not Disturb, offline camera, or overly narrow detection settings | Enable notifications, check Do Not Disturb, confirm both devices are online, test controlled sound or movement, and remember that alerts may be delayed or misclassified. |
| Video buffers or looks blurry | Weak Wi-Fi, network congestion, overheating, or high video quality | Move the camera closer to the router, reduce quality if available, stop downloads, close other apps, and compare same-Wi-Fi and cellular viewing. |
| Phone becomes too hot | Streaming, charging, poor ventilation, damaged battery, or faulty accessories | Stop the stream, disconnect power, remove the case, use a ventilated surface and known-good accessories, and retire the phone if heat persists. |
| Cannot install the app | Unsupported Android version, insufficient storage, or outdated Play components | Check the current Play Store compatibility notice, update what is supported, avoid unofficial APKs, and use a newer phone or dedicated monitor if compatibility remains unavailable. |
| Pairing fails | Different accounts, poor connectivity, outdated app, or incorrect Camera/Viewer roles | Update the app, confirm the account and roles, reconnect both devices to reliable Wi-Fi, and repeat the current QR-code or email pairing flow. |
When an old phone is the wrong choice
Choose a newer spare phone, audio-only setup, local solution, or dedicated monitor instead if:
- The battery is damaged or the phone overheats.
- The app cannot run reliably with the screen off.
- The phone repeatedly loses Wi-Fi or fails to reconnect after restarts.
- Night visibility is inadequate.
- You need local-only processing and do not want a cloud-connected account.
- You need dependable overnight alerting or purpose-built mounting.
- You need breathing, oxygen, apnea, illness, or other medical monitoring.
A dedicated camera may offer better support, mounting, and infrared hardware, but it can still depend on Wi-Fi and cloud services. AlfredCam and products such as the Google Nest Cam Indoor are alternatives for readers whose phone fails the safety or reliability checks. They may introduce hardware and subscription costs.
Final acceptance test
Complete this test before treating the setup as ready:
- The viewer can clearly see the intended sleep area.
- The viewer can hear quiet sounds.
- The camera stays online for several hours.
- Alerts arrive with the viewer app closed.
- The camera recovers after a brief Wi-Fi interruption.
- The setup survives a phone restart without manual repair.
- The camera phone remains acceptably cool.
- The charger and cable are inaccessible to the child and safely routed.
- The account has a unique password and two-factor authentication where available.
- Night visibility is adequate for the intended use.
- An adult has tested the complete system instead of assuming it works.
If it fails any important test, do not rely on it overnight. Fix the problem, use a safer alternative, or choose a purpose-built monitor.
