To make a straight rip cut with a circular saw, align a clamp-on straight-edge guide with your marked cut line, secure it to the sheet, and guide the saw’s base along the rail. Choose a guide long enough for the cut, confirm that your saw base fits, and support the workpiece according to the saw and guide manuals.
What a clamp-on straight-edge guide does
A clamp-on straight-edge guide gives the circular saw a straight path across sheet goods such as plywood. Unlike an edge-riding rip guide, it follows a cut line you mark on the panel rather than measuring from the panel’s outside edge. Kreg describes its Straight Edge Guide as having cutline indicators and built-in clamps for positioning and securing the rail. Kreg Straight Edge Guide
Choose a guide for the cut
These products use different reference and holding methods, so choose based on the cut length, the panel’s available edge, and whether you need repeated strip widths.
| Guide type | Best fit | Published capacity and setup |
|---|---|---|
| Clamp-on straight-edge guide | A cut following a marked line on sheet goods | Kreg’s standard model is listed for cuts up to 4 feet and uses built-in clamps. Kreg product page |
| Longer clamp-on guide | A longer cut on a large panel | Kreg’s XL model is listed for cuts up to 8 feet and uses built-in clamps. Kreg XL product page |
| Edge-riding rip guide | Repeated strips cut to a set width from a straight panel edge | Kreg’s Rip-Cut follows the sheet edge and is specified for cuts up to 24 inches wide. Kreg Rip-Cut product page |
| Track guide | A marked-line cut, including when the panel lacks a suitable straight edge | Kreg’s Accu-Cut aligns to marks, supports cuts up to 50 inches, and uses anti-slip strips rather than clamps. Kreg Accu-Cut product page |

Set up and make the cut
- Check capacity and compatibility. Make sure the guide covers the full intended cut and that its instructions allow your saw and material setup. Kreg lists circular saws, jigsaws, and trim routers for its Straight Edge Guide; its FAQ says tools should retain their base plate. Straight Edge Guide product page Kreg circular-saw guide FAQ
- Mark the cut. Mark the intended line clearly across the sheet. Position the guide using its cutline indicators or the measured offset required by your saw-and-guide setup.
- Secure the guide and workpiece. Clamp the rail firmly before starting the saw, and support and secure the sheet as directed by the saw and guide manuals. A guide does not make an otherwise unsupported sheet safe to cut.
- Run the saw along the rail. Keep the saw’s base plate against the guide throughout the cut, following the manufacturer’s operating instructions. DEWALT’s circular-saw safety document states: “When ripping, always use a rip fence or straight edge guide.” DEWALT circular-saw safety document
Check the clamp setup for thin material
Kreg’s FAQ describes a clamp limitation for a specific setup: cutting over sacrificial foam, where the clamp was designed for material at least 3/4 inch thick. Apply that condition to the setup described in the FAQ rather than assuming it applies to every configuration; consult the guide’s instructions for your material and support arrangement.
