The “power” in the title is leverage from the sawhorses, not a motor or hoist. Two other approaches cover related jobs: a shop-built dolly and hinged lifters for wheeling and transferring sheets, and a commercial panel carrier for moving a sheet by hand.
The tip-up method for raising a sheet onto sawhorses
The method comes from WOOD Magazine’s article “Use (saw)horse power for lifting sheet goods,” updated March 21, 2024. The article credits the tip to John Andrus of Daytona Beach, Florida, and an earlier version of the same article, published May 23, 2018, gives the same sequence and the same contributor credit.
Preparing the sawhorses
- Drill and screw an aluminum block onto one end of each sawhorse. The article does not give the block’s dimensions, the fastener type or size, or where exactly on the horse the block should sit beyond “one end.”
- Dip or coat the feet at that same end in liquid rubber. The article says this makes them less likely to skid. It does not describe the coating procedure, the number of coats, or the drying time.
Lifting the sheet into position
- Stand both sawhorses on end beside the plywood, with the blocked end positioned for the lift.
- Place the edge of the plywood on the aluminum blocks.
- Tip the sawhorses and the plywood together into the working position.
“To safely lift a sheet of plywood onto the sawhorses, stand the sawhorses on end next to the plywood, place the edge of the plywood on the aluminum blocks, and tip the sawhorses, plywood and all, into the working position.” (WOOD Magazine, 2018 version, contributor John Andrus.)
The phrase “to safely lift” is the article’s own wording. The article does not report a test, a measured load, or an independent safety rating for this method.

- Tough Leverage Construction: The leverage created by the weight of the panel and the unique jaws make it easy operate by 1 person, 1 hand; Dual-arm design and impact-resistant high-grade synthetic metal ensuring a strong traction
- Self-Adjusting Gripper Clamp: Golablatt panel lifter features the firmly durable, impact-resistant fiberglass with rubberized TPU gripping pads mounted on both clamping plates increased friction of contact to prevent slipping and protect the surfaces of the sheet from being damaged. Suitable panel thicknesses up to 1 inch thick
- Safe & Energy-Efficient: The weight is distributed evenly when the carrying clamp handle is placed centrally on the panel. The clamp grips tight as you lift. It allows you to lift and move sheet with a straight back, eliminating the requirement of bending over to get under the bottom. Less weight pressure with this tool and greatly reduced risk of injury to the back, neck, shoulders and arms
- Goldblatt Soft-Grip Handles: Ergonomic soft-grip handle that makes carrying sheets effort lessly and it easy for a single person to carry full sheets of material with only one hand. It can hold up to 2 panels at once, single accommodating loads of up to 200 pounds
- Professional Grade: Use the Goldblatt gripper to grip and carry MDO or MDF panels, drywall, plywood, tabletops, sheep metal, OSB, melamine and other sheet goods
What the article does not establish
Before relying on the tip-up method, plan around these gaps:
- Maximum sheet size and weight: not stated.
- Sawhorse load rating: not stated.
- Block and fastener specifications: not stated.
- Coating procedure for the rubber: not stated.
- Test results: none reported.
Because the method depends on the horses staying stable as they tip, use horses that are rated for the load, clear the path before tipping, and have someone ready to steady the sheet if one is available. These are general shop practices, not steps from the article.

Shop-built dolly and hinged lifters
WOOD’s “Sheet Goods Mover/Lifter” plan, published September 19, 2016, is a different system. It adds a wheeled transport step, so it suits a sheet that has to travel some distance before it goes on the horses. The plan’s dimensions are not reproduced here, so check the full plan before cutting material.
Components
- A dolly built from 3/4-inch plywood or MDF and solid stock, with casters mounted parallel to one another.
- Paired hinged 2×4 lifters. One attaches temporarily to the sawhorse top, and the other guides the sheet from vertical to horizontal.
Sequence
- Slide the angle-iron edge of the dolly under the sheet.
- Tilt the sheet so its weight transfers onto the dolly.
- Wheel the sheet to the work area.
- Transfer the sheet to the hinged lifters.
- Tip the sheet onto the sawhorses.
Commercial panel carrier for moving sheets by hand
Kreg Tool’s Panel Carrier, item KMA3000, is a top-gripping carrier for sheet goods. Kreg’s product page states that it carries full 4×8 sheets, supports up to 100 lb, and grips material up to 3/4 inch thick. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications, not independent test results, and availability and pricing can change.

- Effortless One-Hand Carry: Easily carry plywood, drywall, and panels with one hand, reducing strain and increasing efficiency.
- High Load Capacity: Supports up to 200 lbs and holds up to two sheets, making it perfect for heavy-duty tasks.
- Ergonomic Design: No need to bend over or use your back; designed for comfortable, upright carrying.
- Durable Construction: Made from robust materials for long-lasting performance in any work environment.
- Versatile Use: Ideal for carpenters, builders, and DIY enthusiasts needing a reliable and convenient carrying solution.
The carrier is for carrying a panel from one place to another. It is not a hoist and does not raise a sheet onto sawhorses, so it does not replace the tip-up method or the dolly and lifters.
