Start with the traps: make sure every sink, shower, tub, laundry standpipe, toilet, and floor drain has a water seal. Add water to dry drains, look for leaks at accessible joints, and listen for gurgling or bubbling when nearby fixtures run. If the odor returns, a whole-system smoke test by a licensed plumber or plumbing inspector is the dependable way to find hidden drain-waste-vent (DWV) leaks. Smoke testing involves sealing vent terminals and controlling pressure, so it should follow the plumbing code adopted by your local authority rather than being improvised indoors.

What a sewer-gas test is meant to find

A sewer-gas investigation looks for two different failures: a missing water seal at a fixture trap and an unintended opening in the DWV system. The water in a P-trap is normally the first barrier between a room and the drainage piping. A cracked fitting, loose cleanout, failed connection, or damaged vent can provide another path even when every trap contains water.

Begin with the simple, reversible checks a homeowner can perform. If adding water stops the odor and it stays gone, the immediate problem was probably a dry or disturbed trap. If the smell returns, if water is repeatedly pulled out of a trap, or if several fixtures gurgle together, the cause may be evaporation, siphonage, back pressure, or a venting defect. Those conditions require more than deodorizer or another bucket of water.

How traps and vents protect your home

The water seal in a P-trap

A P-trap is the curved section of a fixture drain that retains water after the fixture empties. The 2024 International Plumbing Code (IPC) specifies a liquid seal not less than 2 inches (51 mm) and not more than 4 inches (102 mm). The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) uses the same 2-to-4-inch range. The exact permitted arrangement depends on the edition adopted and enforced where you live.

Every trap can lose its seal in a different way:

  • Evaporation: water slowly disappears from an unused floor drain, shower, tub, or sink.
  • Siphonage: a pressure drop caused by flowing drainage pulls water out of a trap.
  • Back pressure: positive pressure in the drainage system pushes water out of the trap.
  • Capillary action, leakage, or installation defects: an improperly configured or damaged trap can drain without an obvious fixture event.

Why venting matters

Vents admit or release air so drainage flow does not create destructive pressure differences. IPC commentary states that the system should limit the pressure differential acting on a fixture-trap seal to no more than 1 inch of water column (249 Pa). A blocked, disconnected, undersized, or incorrectly routed vent can therefore show up as a trap that empties, a toilet that bubbles, or a recurring odor after another fixture is used.

A vent terminal may be outside on a roof or wall, while much of the vent piping is concealed. You can inspect accessible portions, but a concealed defect generally needs a controlled test and professional access.

Homeowner screening: a safe sequence

This screening does not certify the plumbing system. It helps identify a dry trap, an accessible leak, or symptoms that justify a formal inspection.

  1. Make a fixture list. Walk the building and record every sink, shower, bathtub, laundry standpipe, toilet, utility sink, basement drain, garage drain, and other floor drain. Include drains in rooms that are rarely occupied.
  2. Replenish infrequently used traps. Pour water into each unused drain. The City of Toronto’s resident guidance for preparing household traps says to pour one to two litres of water down every drain in the home or building. For a floor drain, pour slowly enough to ensure the water reaches the trap rather than pooling on the grate.
  3. Check toilets and fixture traps. A toilet bowl normally contains standing water; a sink, tub, or shower should retain water in its trap after draining. Do not dismantle a concealed trap solely for a visual check.
  4. Inspect accessible connections. Run the fixture, then look and feel (with dry tissue) around exposed trap joints, slip nuts, cleanouts, and the connection below the fixture. Model residential provisions use filling and draining followed by visual inspection for watertightness. Stop if water reaches electrical equipment or concealed building materials.
  5. Run nearby fixtures. Flush a toilet while a sink drains, run a washing machine discharge, or fill and empty a tub while listening at nearby drains. Gurgling, bubbling, or a change in bowl level indicates that air and water are not moving normally.
  6. Recheck the odor. Note where the smell is strongest and whether it changes after each test. If the odor disappears after refilling a trap but returns days or weeks later, treat that recurrence as evidence of evaporation, trap leakage, or loss of trap protection rather than as a one-time spill.
  7. Inspect accessible vent components. From the ground or a safe interior access point, look for an obvious disconnected pipe, damage, or a blocked terminal. Do not climb onto a roof without suitable fall protection and a safe access plan.

Symptoms and what they suggest

Observation Likely direction Next action
Odor stops after water is added to one unused drain Dry trap or evaporated seal Monitor that drain; if it repeatedly dries, ask about automatic trap-seal protection.
Odor returns quickly after refilling Leak, siphonage, back pressure, or a trap that cannot hold water Observe during fixture use and arrange a plumbing inspection.
Gurgling when a toilet flushes or a fixture drains Pressure imbalance, partial blockage, or vent/DWV defect Stop relying on odor treatment; have the drainage and vent system evaluated.
Water visible around an exposed trap or cleanout Liquid-side leakage at an accessible connection Limit use if damage is spreading and have the joint repaired.
Several rooms smell at once, or odor appears near a wall or ceiling Concealed DWV opening, failed cleanout, or vent connection Use a licensed plumber for controlled smoke or other code-compliant testing.

Testing a floor drain that keeps drying out

Manual replenishment

For a drain used only occasionally, adding water is the simplest test and short-term remedy. Mark the date, add water, and check the drain again over the next several days and weeks. The useful question is not merely whether the drain is wet today, but whether it can retain its seal between normal uses.

Trap-seal primers and barrier devices

If water repeatedly disappears from an evaporation-prone floor drain, ask a plumber about an ASSE 1018 potable-water trap-seal primer valve or an approved barrier-type device. A primer supplies water to a trap when the plumbing system operates; a barrier limits the passage of sewer gas while allowing the drain to function. The 2024 IPC recognizes potable-water, reclaimed or graywater, wastewater, and barrier methods for protecting traps subject to evaporation. The 2024 IRC recognizes trap-seal primer valves and barrier devices for emergency or evaporation-prone floor drains.

Inspecting plumbing vents without creating a hazard

From a safe location, look for a vent terminal that is visibly broken, displaced, or obstructed. Check accessible attic or service spaces for an open coupling, a pipe that has pulled apart, or signs of water damage. Do not seal, cap, or modify a vent to suppress an odor; the vent must admit and release air as designed.

Roof work introduces fall, weather, and electrical hazards. If the terminal is on a roof, arrange a plumber or qualified roofing professional with appropriate safety controls. A visual inspection cannot confirm that concealed vent piping is connected, correctly sized, or free of a hidden opening.

DIY screening versus professional testing

Approach What it can establish Limits
Homeowner water and listening checks Whether accessible traps hold water, whether joints visibly leak, and whether fixtures produce gurgling or bubbling. Does not locate concealed openings or certify code compliance.
Manual water replenishment Whether an unused trap’s odor improves when its seal is restored. Only a short-term remedy when evaporation or leakage is recurring.
Water or visual test at fixtures Liquid tightness at accessible fixture connections after filling and draining. Does not trace gas paths through concealed DWV piping.
Professional smoke test Gas paths from the DWV system to unintended openings, including concealed connections when smoke can reach them. Requires equipment, terminal sealing, pressure control, ventilation, and code or inspector oversight.
Licensed inspection Formal evaluation of access points, venting, drainage, and jurisdictional requirements. Scope and witnessing requirements vary by local authority and code edition.

How a professional whole-system smoke test works

A sanitary-system smoke test is a confirmatory procedure, not a household deodorizing trick. A U.S. government plumbing manual describes filling traps first, introducing thick penetrating smoke from one or more smoke machines, closing stack openings when smoke appears, and applying pressure equivalent to approximately 1 inch of water column. Model residential provisions describe introducing pungent smoke, sealing vent terminals, and maintaining 1 inch of water-column pressure for at least 15 minutes where the local authority requires that finished-DWV test. The cited 15-minute period is an example from the 2018 Puerto Rico Residential Code; it is not a universal requirement.

In practical terms, the tester isolates the system so smoke travels through the sanitary piping instead of simply escaping from an open terminal. Smoke appearing at a wall cavity, cleanout, fixture connection, ceiling, or another unintended indoor opening identifies a leak path. The tester then documents the location and determines whether the opening is a failed fitting, a disconnected vent, a damaged pipe, or another defect.

Pressure is deliberately low but must be controlled. The 1-inch water-column figure is approximately 249 Pa, the same pressure differential referenced in the IPC commentary for protecting trap seals. The tester should use calibrated equipment and follow the authority’s procedure rather than exceeding a specified pressure.

Smoke test, water test, or another method?

Smoke testing

Smoke is useful when the question is, “Where can gas leave the DWV system?” It can reveal paths that a visual inspection cannot see, especially around concealed piping. It does not replace repair, and it should not be performed with occupants or pets exposed to smoke.

Water and visual testing

Water testing answers a different question: “Does this accessible fixture or drain connection hold liquid?” Filling and draining a fixture while inspecting exposed joints can find a loose trap connection or cracked fitting. A dry surface does not prove that concealed piping is gas-tight.

Pressure and code tests

Some jurisdictions require a specified finished-DWV gas-tight test before approval, with the local authority deciding the test medium, pressure, duration, and who may perform or witness it. Ask the building or plumbing department which code edition and inspection procedure applies before scheduling work.

Safety rules and prohibited shortcuts

  • Do not introduce smoke, compressed air, peppermint, chemicals, or any other substance into the plumbing system unless the procedure is permitted by the local authority and the equipment instructions.
  • Do not pressurize a system with improvised pumps, cylinders, or shop air. Unexpected pressure can move trap water, expose a weak joint, or damage plumbing.
  • Keep occupants, children, and pets away from professional test areas. Provide ventilation and follow the tester’s re-entry instructions.
  • Stop immediately if a test causes unexpected leakage, structural wetting, unusual pressure, or a strong indoor odor, and notify the tester or plumbing authority.
  • Never enter a sewer, tank, pit, or confined space to investigate an odor. Such spaces require specialized procedures and equipment.

When to call a licensed plumber or inspector

Arrange professional help when an odor returns after traps are refilled, when several fixtures gurgle, when a trap repeatedly loses water, when smoke or odor seems to come from a wall or ceiling, or when a repair requires roof, crawlspace, or cleanout access. A plumber can select a code-compliant test, isolate branches, inspect concealed piping, and recommend a repair rather than masking the symptom.

Local code editions and enforcement also determine who may conduct, certify, or witness a smoke or pressure test. Before work begins, ask the plumbing department whether a permit, inspection, licensed contractor, or witnessed test is required. This matters particularly in new construction, remodels, commercial spaces, and any project being closed up behind finishes.

Troubleshooting common situations

The basement drain smells, but no other fixture does

Refill the drain and record whether the smell stops. If it returns while the space is unused, evaporation or a leaking trap is likely. Have the drain checked for a trap-seal primer or barrier device suitable for the locally adopted code.

The smell returns after every shower or laundry discharge

Listen at the shower, laundry standpipe, and nearby fixtures while the discharge occurs. A changing water level, bubbling, or gurgling points toward siphonage, back pressure, a partial blockage, or a vent problem. Do not keep adding water to a trap that is being mechanically disturbed; arrange an inspection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A toilet bubbles when a sink drains

The shared drainage path may be developing a pressure imbalance or blockage. Limit repeated high-volume discharges until the cause is evaluated, especially if fixtures drain slowly or sewage backs up.

No trap is dry, but an odor remains near a wall

Check accessible cleanouts and fixture connections for an opening, then request a controlled smoke test. A concealed vent or drain connection can leak gas without leaving visible water.

Keeping trap seals reliable

  • Include every floor drain and rarely used fixture in a periodic inspection routine.
  • After a long vacancy, refill traps before occupying the space and check for odor over the following days.
  • Keep drain grates and cleanout covers properly fitted; do not permanently obstruct a required drain or vent.
  • Record recurring symptoms, the fixture operating at the time, and whether water level changed. This information helps a plumber isolate the branch.
  • Use only an approved primer or barrier device where evaporation is a known problem, and maintain it according to its instructions.

The practical decision

Use water, visual inspection, and careful listening to screen for a dry trap, an accessible leak, or a pressure symptom. If replenishing a trap solves the odor only temporarily, treat the recurrence as a plumbing fault to diagnose, not as a reason to pour in more chemicals. For hidden or system-wide leaks, a licensed professional using a controlled smoke test under the adopted local code provides the clearest path to the source and the appropriate repair.
