There is no universal way to transfer a home-improvement store gift card or store credit after a location closes. Start with the card issuer, not a competitor: confirm whether the balance remains usable at another branch or online, whether the issuer will replace or transfer it, and whether a deadline applies. State law, the card type, and any bankruptcy-court order can change the result.
What happens to the balance when one store closes?
A single branch closing does not necessarily cancel an unpaid gift-card or store-credit balance. Other branches may continue honoring it, and the retailer may keep online redemption open. The issuer can also impose location-specific limits during a restructuring or bankruptcy. The only reliable answer is the issuer’s current policy for your exact card and location.

A competitor may choose to accept the card, but that is a voluntary business decision. Nothing in the general consumer guidance establishes an automatic right to use one retailer’s card at another retailer.
Identify the card before you ask for a transfer
“Gift card” and “store credit” can describe different products. Find the card number, issuing company, purchase or return receipt, and any printed terms before contacting anyone.

Paid retail gift card
This is money you or someone else paid to use at the issuing retailer. The retailer’s own locations, website, and terms generally control redemption. A closing branch may be only one of several places where it can still be used.
Return-issued store credit
A return may produce a store-credit card, electronic account balance, or merchandise certificate rather than a cash purchase card. The return record and the retailer’s account system may be required to validate it. Ask whether the credit is tied to the closed location, a customer account, or the chain as a whole.
Promotional certificate or coupon
Promotional value can have different expiration, product, and location conditions from a paid card. Do not assume federal gift-card rules apply in exactly the same way to every promotion; ask the issuer to classify the instrument and state the applicable terms.
Network-branded prepaid card
The Federal Trade Commission distinguishes retail cards redeemable at the retailer that sold them from network-branded bank gift cards accepted wherever the payment network is accepted. If your card carries a payment-network logo and is not limited to the home-improvement chain, contact the bank or network issuer rather than a local store first.
Step-by-step: protect and use the balance
- Record the balance and identifying details. Check the balance through a phone number, website, or store channel printed on the card. Save a screenshot or printout showing the amount and date. Photograph both sides of a physical card, keeping the full number private. Retain purchase, return, and activation receipts.
- Use an official contact channel. Go to the retailer’s current official website and use the customer-service number or message link published there. Avoid relying on an old social-media post, an unverified phone number, or advice copied from a different bankruptcy case.
- Ask specific redemption questions. Ask whether the balance is still honored; which open stores can process it; whether the website accepts it; whether a replacement card or account transfer is available; whether the credit can be split across transactions; and what deadline, if any, applies. Request the answer in writing.
- Confirm the exact locations. A chain may keep cards active at some branches while limiting them at closing locations. Ask the issuer to identify eligible stores by city or store number and whether registers will accept the card until a stated date.
- Check for an official closure or bankruptcy notice. If the company has filed for bankruptcy or restructuring, find the case or claims-agent website linked by the retailer, court, or your state Attorney General. Read current court orders and claims instructions. Old news reports can describe terms that have already expired.
- Ask nearby competitors separately. A competing home-improvement retailer may voluntarily honor the card, offer a courtesy exchange, or decline it. Ask a manager before traveling or bringing materials to checkout, and request written confirmation if the store agrees.
- Consider a payment-card dispute promptly. If you bought the card with a credit card and the business closed without delivering the promised value, contact the credit-card issuer quickly about a possible charge dispute. Eligibility, documentation, and time limits depend on the payment provider and the facts.
- Evaluate a bankruptcy claim. If the issuer will not redeem the balance and a bankruptcy case is active, follow the case’s consumer-claim procedure. Submit proof of the balance by the published deadline. A claim may be allowed without producing a full recovery; payment depends on the bankruptcy estate and the claims process.
- Escalate only after preserving the paper trail. Keep emails, chat transcripts, names, dates, balance checks, receipts, notices, and declined-transaction records. If the issuer refuses to explain the policy, contact your state Attorney General’s consumer-protection office or a qualified local lawyer.
Compare the possible ways to recover value
| Route | Who controls it | Where value may be used or recovered | Confirmation to obtain | Timing or risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open branches of the same retailer | The retailer | Locations the issuer designates | Eligible store list and any transaction limits in writing | Issuer-set deadline or location limits may apply |
| Retailer website | The retailer’s online system | Online checkout if the card remains enabled | Written confirmation that this card type works online | Online acceptance can be disabled or end on a stated date |
| Replacement or balance transfer offered by the issuer | The issuer | A new card, account, or other redemption method the issuer specifies | Transfer procedure, identity requirements, and deadline | Available only if the issuer offers it |
| Voluntary competitor acceptance | The competing retailer | Only the competitor’s participating stores or channels | Manager’s written confirmation of amount, stores, and conditions | Acceptance is optional and may be withdrawn or limited |
| Credit-card payment dispute | The card-issuing bank or payment provider | Potential reversal or credit under the provider’s dispute rules | Dispute reference number and required evidence | Contact promptly; eligibility and deadlines vary |
| Bankruptcy claim | The bankruptcy court and estate claims process | A distribution, if the claim is allowed and funds are available | Claim form, filing receipt, and court or claims-agent instructions | Recovery is not assured and depends on the estate |
If the retailer is in bankruptcy or restructuring
Use the case documents, not informal promises
A bankruptcy filing can produce court orders that change how and where a card is accepted. The issuer may continue normal redemption, restrict cards to certain branches, or establish a short window for use. Look for notices from the retailer, the bankruptcy court, the appointed claims agent, or a state consumer-protection office. Verify the case number and the effective dates before relying on an instruction.
Understand the difference between redemption and a claim
Using the card at an authorized store or website is a redemption transaction. Filing a bankruptcy claim is a request to share in the estate as a creditor. A claim does not itself convert the balance into cash, and the eventual distribution can be less than the card’s face value or zero.

Meet the published deadline
Claims procedures can require a form, proof of purchase or return, the card number, and a mailing or electronic filing date. Keep a copy of everything submitted and proof that the claim was received. A state Attorney General’s office may explain the process, but only the case’s official documents establish the operative deadline and requirements.
Can another home-improvement retailer accept it?
Ask, but do not present competitor acceptance as a legal entitlement. Michigan’s consumer guidance says competitors “may also be willing” to honor a card when the original merchant has filed for bankruptcy. That wording means the decision belongs to the competing business.
Before visiting, ask a store manager to confirm:
- Whether the store accepts this specific issuer and card type.
- Whether it will accept the full balance or only a portion.
- Whether the arrangement applies to all branches or only the contacted store.
- Whether online purchases, special orders, delivery charges, or gift-card purchases are excluded.
- How the cashier will verify the balance and what identification or paperwork is required.
Save the manager’s name, date, and written message. A verbal assurance from one location may not bind the chain’s other stores.
What federal gift-card rules do—and do not—guarantee
Under 15 U.S.C. § 1693l–1, covered gift certificates and store gift cards generally cannot expire before five years after issuance or the latest funds load, subject to statutory exceptions and disclosure requirements. Federal rules also restrict dormancy and service fees when specified conditions are met.
Recommended Free Tools
Those protections concern expiration and fees; they do not create a general right to transfer a card to another merchant, require a closing branch to remain open, or compel a competitor to accept the balance. The card’s category and the issuer’s current operating status still matter.
Why state law can change the answer
Gift-card rules are not uniform nationwide. The California Attorney General’s consumer guidance states that California law protects gift certificates and requires businesses to honor them even if they file bankruptcy. That is a California-specific statement, not a nationwide rule, and its application depends on the instrument, the transaction, and the law in force when you act.

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra summarized the policy this way: “Bankruptcy does not grant debtor companies blanket freedom from their commitments and obligations to their customers and creditors.” The statement should be read in its California consumer-law context, not as a promise that every cardholder in every state will receive full redemption.
Check the law of the state connected to your purchase or use, the retailer’s terms, and the actual bankruptcy case. A state Attorney General’s consumer-protection office can identify the correct agency and general procedure; a lawyer can apply the law to a disputed card.

On August 30, 2024, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office reported that LL Flooring, formerly known as Lumber Liquidators, had filed for bankruptcy restructuring. The notice said gift cards would be accepted at three closing Minnesota locations through September 19, 2024, while other Minnesota locations would continue accepting them.
Those dates and locations were terms of that particular proceeding and have passed. The example shows why a cardholder must verify the exact retailer, state, store, and current court order instead of assuming that another closure will follow the same schedule.

The website is gone or the phone number is disconnected
Check the retailer’s closure notice, bankruptcy court docket, state Attorney General alerts, and any official claims-agent page. Preserve the card and receipts while you locate the authoritative contact. Do not send the card number to an unverified person who promises a transfer.
A cashier declines a card that support said was valid
Ask the cashier to involve a manager and record the store, register date, time, and error message. Contact the issuer again with those details and request a written explanation. If the issuer has announced a location-specific deadline, confirm that the transaction occurred before it and at an eligible branch.

The card is lost or damaged
Ask the issuer whether it can locate the balance by card number, receipt, activation record, or customer account. Replacement policies differ for paid cards, return credits, promotions, and network-branded products. A photograph or receipt can help, but it does not guarantee replacement.
The stated deadline has passed
Ask whether the deadline was a court-ordered redemption cutoff, an internal promotion, or a claims-filing date. Those are different events with different remedies. If a bankruptcy claim period remains open, follow the official filing instructions. If no procedure is available, seek state-specific consumer or legal advice.
The issuer says the balance is zero
Compare the issuer’s balance record with your receipts and transaction history. Request an itemized explanation of any redemption, fee, adjustment, or expiration entry. Escalate in writing and retain the response before pursuing a payment dispute or regulatory complaint.

When to seek outside help
Contact your state Attorney General’s consumer-protection office when the issuer provides no authoritative answer, contradicts its published notice, or refuses to explain a balance adjustment. Consult a qualified local lawyer when the amount is substantial, a bankruptcy claim is disputed, several states are involved, or you need an interpretation of state gift-certificate law.
There is no reliable market-wide recovery percentage for closed-store gift cards. A historical case deadline is not a statistic, and no general success rate should be assumed. Your result depends on the card type, issuer policy, state law, payment method, and any court orders governing the retailer.
