Store sheets only when they are completely dry, in a clean, cool, dry place with stable conditions and some air movement. If musty odour returns after washing and thorough drying, check the storage space—and nearby building surfaces—for persistent dampness.
Prepare sheets before storing them
Make sure sheets are clean and fully dry before folding them away. Moisture trapped in stored textiles can encourage mould and mildew; the Canadian Conservation Institute warns that excess humidity can lead to mould and mildew and, if not remedied, textile decomposition (Basic care – Textiles).

- After laundering, let sheets dry completely, including seams and thicker hems.
- If they have been stored in a damp space, wash and dry them before putting them away again.
- Do not rely on fragrance to cover an odour: the priority is removing moisture and addressing its source.
Choose a dry, stable storage location
Use a clean, cool, dry area where temperature and humidity do not change drastically. Avoid a closet or storage area that stays damp, as well as basements or attics with persistent moisture or large environmental swings. Conservation guidance for textiles recommends stable conditions and air movement; it cautions that airtight plastic can contribute to condensation around textiles (Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute: Care of Textiles).

Allow some air movement
Do not assume a sealed plastic container is the safest choice if moisture could be trapped inside or condensation could form. Leave some space around stored linens rather than packing them tightly into an airtight enclosure.

Use a breathable cover if you want one
A clean cotton or muslin bag is an optional way to cover folded sheets while allowing air movement. This is a practical household application of museum textile guidance, not a proven stand-alone fix for musty odours or a requirement for storing ordinary bedding.
Why sheets become musty in storage
Mould growth on textiles is promoted by the combination of high relative humidity, warmth and poor air circulation. The Canadian Conservation Institute describes relative humidity between 65% and 100%, warm temperatures and poor air circulation as conditions that promote mould growth (Mould Growth on Textiles – CCI Notes 13/15). That range comes from conservation guidance; it is not a precise household threshold for when sheets will become musty.

What to do if the musty smell keeps returning
If sheets smell musty again after washing and thorough drying, inspect the storage area instead of treating it only as a laundry problem. Look for persistent dampness in the closet or room and check nearby walls and building surfaces. - Check for signs of moisture near the closet, including on adjoining walls.
- If the odour or visible mould persists, address the moisture source rather than simply masking the smell.
What not to assume
Conservation sources support keeping textiles dry and allowing airflow, but they do not establish a guaranteed odour-prevention method for household sheets. They also do not show that scented sachets, dryer sheets, vinegar or a specific storage product will prevent mustiness. Focus first on complete drying and a storage space that stays clean, cool and dry.
